When I had woken up this morning, I thought at this time of night I'd be just finishing a quiet dinner with Jack here while I watch him play with his toys.
Nope. You'd think after what had happened just a few seconds ago he would turn around and walk out that door like nothing had happened.
Instead with a careful watchful eye I watched him open my freezer box.
Do people have no consideration just to walk in to someone else's home and start searching through their cabinets.
Mr. Saunders took a deep breath probably feeling pity for me one emotion I very much hate, as my fridge was bare.
Though not a single word he spoke. Instead he had pulled out my ice box placing it on the counter before shoving his right fist into my bucket of ice.
He had hiss in pain but said no word.
Not even when Jack was still crying in my arms holding me like he didn't want to let go.
"It's okay honey." I rubbed his back.
He continued to sob and trembled and I couldn't even calm him down.
Jack's whole body was shaking. What ever those people did had terrified him terribly.
"They are gone now okay."
"Mummy." He heaved.
Mr. Saunders just glared at me and I refuse to make eye contact afraid I would be set on fire with the way he was just looking at me.
Leaning against my counter he remained silent.
"Um...are you just going to stare at me?" I broke this awkward moment while bouncing a crying Jack in my arms.
I don't usually carry Jack so much because for a petite girl he was heavy and I had trouble just trying to hold him up.
Rising from his seat Mr. Saunders strolled towards me, his leather shoes were the only thing I could hear as he gently lifted Jack into his arms and began to bounce him like I had done just a few seconds ago.
To my surprise Jack had let him.
Where was this cold hearted jerk that I have known even if only for a few hours instead he almost seems as if he cares.
My eyes had soften making him smirk at me.
"I only did helped you so you'd owe me besides I don't want my secretary to be distracted because of a child." He spoke coldly. "And to make him stop that annoying cry of his."
I said almost right, he's still a cold hearted prick if you ask me.
"Well," taking Jack away from him, "If you think this was some kind of pity case you decided to take on, you better look for it else where because I don't need you to help me." I opened the door for him, "Kindly leave my apartment." I know I should be grateful but to know he didn't do this out of the kindness of his heart had upset me.
"What the heck are you doing? Is that anyway to talk to your boss?"
Boss? Is he joking. "Is this some kind of joke?"
"Do you see me laughing." His eyes was now burning a whole in my face.
"Mr. Saunders are you telling me you are making me your secretary." I don't know if I should be happy or scared at the moment. This must be some kind of trick right. Because Mr. Saunders doesn't make surprise visits to his employees home. He must have an agenda. "What's the catch?"
Mr. Saunders closed my door once again, "You have to quit school."
What the hell did he say! "School? How..."
"I have my way Ms. Stone. What you failed to tell me is you hadn't even graduated and you have a family and yet when I asked you at the time of our interview you hadn't mention any of these." He interrupted.
"Mr. Saunders if you had let me finish a single sentence you would have known before hand."
Guilt had plastered on his face because what I said was true. He kept answering the questions he had asked me.
"And if I refuse to quit school."
Pulling out his cell phone, "I could have social service be here in a flash and I am sure your son would be heart broken yet again." Did he just threaten me. "So you owe me."
My face had turned green, I think I was going to be sick. "Mr. Saunders I have heard what your employees must fit into a certain category which you your self created with high exceptions and the fact that you want me to quit schools are proving to be true. However it is my dream to get that degree and I am sorry if it would clash with your schedules but as you can see I do have a son to take care off." I finished it all in one breath in which I was glad he actually stood there just listening.
"I understand, but have you ever thought about online classes?" The thought did cross my mind but I didn't have a computer.
"As you can see in my home I don't have a computer and what about my son?"
"What about him?"
"You honestly think it's that easy for me to find a baby sitter."
"Bring him to work with you." My eyes widen at his response, "As long as you do your job properly then that be fine."
"Mr. Saunders why me?" I asked curiously.
He began to walk around my tiny apartment eyeing what little I have, "The only person who had categorized my office in an hour, I may have been rash to not even consider you but I do apologize."
I was taken back, blown away more I like it. He was apologizing to me. This cold hearted prick actually admitting his mistakes.
"Can I think about it?" What in the right mind would I ask that. He was offering me a job and thinking about it is absurd.
"No. You will work for me and I will take no for an answer." He deadpan. "In the mean time you will move out of this place and into a close by housing of my choosing near my company after all I can't have my wife and son living in such grotesque environment." He sarcastically mocked.
That does sound tempting unfortunately I have to turn him down. My dad hasn't even come home yet and this house is close to school, it's very easy for me to commute back and forth.
"Thank you for the offer unfortunately I have to decline."
"You are supposedly married to me and have my son, what if those people from social service come back. I can't have my supposedly family be living in a dump."
"Yeah about that, how are you suppose to show proof that you are the father?"
"I'm a very powerful man Ms. Stone." His voice had grown huskier making me swoon. "And you will move..."
"I'm sorry it's my dad."
"Your dad?"
"Yes, he hasn't been coming home lately and if he finds me gone he may worry so until then and besides school is nearby."
"Very well, until your father comes home but for now I will have a car come pick you up. You start working at 8 in the morning..."
"What about school?"
"I said take online classes."
"Again I don't have a computer." I argued.
"Are you always this stubborn."
"Only when the occassion calls for it." I was now joking with him. I didn't feel any aggressiveness from him instead it felt relaxing to be talking to him.
"Don't worry about that just be ready by 7 tomorrow and bring your son, what's his name?"
"Jack."
"Jack Saunders." Saunders? Did he just gave my son his last name.
"I'm sorry what."
"Seeing I sort of claimed him as my son, that is what he will be known as at work."
"But people will talk."
"So let them." He had grin. This was a new side of him. My heart was now beating against my chest.
"Okay."
"Good, have a good night Ms. Stone and you too little man." Jack had been quiet after he had calm down looking at Mr. Saunders himself.
Smiling Jack waved, "Buh bye."
