A Contract of Self Sacrifice
Frank Frederick, a business entrepreneur who occupy a significant place in Singapore’s Maritime Industry, back in the early 20th Century, Singapore’s coastal region – a bustling center of trade, and and commerce. Frederick recognized the huge potential of shipping as a driving force for economic growth. Frederick’s innovative spirit continued to inspire future generations of entrepreneurs and the Maritime Industry Frank Frederick Shipping Company, despite its initial success, faced numerous challenges throughout its history. The shipping trade was greatly impacted by the global economic decline of the 1930s. Lack of trade and less movements required for products’ transportation affected the business of the company where Frederick worked. Natural calamities might even lead to serious damage to ships which resulted in lots of operational loss. Collision and grounding incidents were always possible and there were several during the period under consideration. Such occurrences could lead to immersions and sinkage of ships, other losses and even loss of lives. One of the major issues in the technological change within the backgrounds of the shipping industry is that the rate of the developed change is rather high. Where new technologies may aid efficiency and lower costs they also needed much capital inputs and adjustments. Governments can from time to time change the laws that prescribe its operations within the shipping industry. Failure to adhere to those regulations exposes an organization to penalties, fines and operational constrains. As you can obviously notice, Frank Frederick Shipping Company faced all these challenges and therefore showed flexibility. The coping with these adversities pointed the company to a successful future and success story of the company that became a vital part of the Singapore maritime industry. Mr. Smith one of Frank’s on the big investor is seen standing outside Frank’s office, knocking on the door. Mr. Smith stepped into the office, closed the door behind him. Frank, I’m here to talk about your company’s financial situation. Frank(Sighs) “I know, Mr. Smith. I’m in a real shit.” Mr. Smith Nodded. “I’ve been following your company’s progress, and it’s not good. Your cash flow is negative, your debt is skyrocketing, and your customers are starting to complain about late deliveries.” Frank defensively, “It’s not as bad as it seems. We’re working on it.” Mr. Smith shook his head, “Frank, you’ve been promising to turn things around for months now, but nothing has changed. I’m starting to think that your company is a lost cause.” Frank pleadingly, “please, Mr. Smith. Don’t give up on me. I’m working hard to fix this.” Mr. Smith coldly, “I’m not giving up on you, Frank. I’m giving up on your company. I’m withdrawing my investment.” Frank shocked, “what? But that’s not fair! You can’t just abandon me like this.” Mr. Smith stands up, “Frank, I’ve invested a lot of money in your company, and I’ve lost a lot of money. I’m not going to lose any more.” Frank desperately, “please, Mr. Smith. Give me another chance. I promise I can turn things around.” Mr. Smith shook his head, “I’ve heard that promise before, Frank. And I’m not buying it anymore.” Frank, frantically, “but what about my employees? What about their families? They’re going to lose their jobs if you withdraw your investment.” Mr. Smith sighs, “but you bridge our contract and you understand the implications.” Frank pleadingly reaffirms, “I understand that, Mr Smith, but I can’t ……… go to jail….., Mr Smith concluded, “I can’t let my own financial situation suffer because of your mistakes.” Frank begging, “please, Mr. Smith, just give me a little more time, I will fix this mess.” Mr. Smith turned to leave, I’m sorry, Frank. I can’t help you. I can only endure till month end, if nothing is done, then you will leave me with no choice other.” Frank cries out, “oh my God!” Mr. Smith walked out of the office, closed the door behind him. Frank slid down the wall, sobbing, got up and………stopped, he struck the desk; slammed his fist down, collapsed into his chair, his body language conveying a sense of defeat. He rose to his feet, his fists clenched tightly. He began to walk back and forth, his mind raced with thoughts of a solution. A plushy office, bathed in the dim light of a desk lamp. Cold and empty, Frank Fredrick glanced around the office, noting the stark contrast to its former vibrancy. Mockingly he looked out the window, the city lights seeming to taunt him with their brilliance. The cityscape served as a constant reminder of his past success, now lost. Frank Fredrick’s mind continued to race, searching for a solution, a way out of this insurmountable predicament. He thought of his daughter, Blanca, a bright and promising young woman who would be forced to sacrifice her happiness for his sake. “I’ ll ruin her life,” he muttered to himself, “All for this damned company.” His eyes closed as he picture Blanca’s smiling face. “I’m such a failure,” he said, tears welling up in his eyes. “I had let everyone down.” He thought of his wife, who stood by him through thick and thin. He stood at the window, stared out at the city lights. The once-familiar skyline now became meaningless and hostile. He felt lost, alone, and Utterly dejected. “What am I going to do?” he asked himself. “How can I fix this mess?” As he stood there, lost in thought, a serene cold wind swept through the room, carrying with it the scent of the ocean. Frank Fredrick thought, there was still a way to save his company there by to redeem himself. But it would require a sacrifice, a greater sacrifice than he had ever dreamt of. “Blanca, I know this is a lot to ask,” Frank Fredrick pleaded, his voice filled with desperation. “But it’s the only way to save our family. Please, I beg you.” Blanca pauses, her body frozen in indecision; heart aching, her face contorts in pain; eyes filled with tears; her gaze fixed on the bustling city below, she felt a cold dread creeping into her heart. Her father, a once-respected businessman, was on the brink of bankruptcy, his company teetering on the edge of collapse. She thought of her father, a man who had always been her role model. Now, it is up to her to save him, to prevent him from going to prison. “I can’t let that happen,” she whispers to herself, her voice inaudible. “I won’t let him go to jail.” But the price of saving her father is too high. She was being asked to marry a stranger, a cold, calculating billionaire who had shown no interest in her as a person. The idea of spending the rest of her life with someone she didn’t love filled her with dread. “I can’t do this,” she says, tears welled down in her eyes. “I can’t marry someone I don’t love.” “I wouldn’t give up everything,” she says, her voice filled with despair. “My freedom, my happiness, my future.” She thought of her friends, her family, and the life she had built for herself. She had always been independent, a woman who had never relied on anyone. Now, she would be forced to become dependent on a man she barely knew. She closed her eyes, picturing herself in a future with Leo Bernard. She saw a life of loneliness, isolation, and unhappiness. “I can’t do this,” she said again, her voice filled with conviction. “I won’t let him control my life.” She opened her eyes and looked out at the city once more. It was a beautiful sight, but it does nothing to ease the pain she felt in her heart. “I had to find a way out of this,” she said to herself. “I had to save my father without sacrificing my own happiness.” Frank’s face fell, “Please, Blanca,” he said, his voice pleaded. “Think about the consequences. If I go to prison, our family would be ruined. We’ll lose everything.” Blanca bit her lip, her eyes filled with tears. She knew her father was right. If he went to prison, their family would be devastated. “Okay,” she said, reluctantly, her voice barely a whisper. “I’ll do it.” After the wedding ceremony, Blanca and Leo were whisked away to their luxurious new home, a stark contrast to the modest apartment she shared with her parents. The luxury was overwhelming, yet it remained a constant reminder of the wealth and power that had brought them together. As they stood in the balcony, overlooking the bustling city of Singapore, Blanca felt a twinge of loneliness. She missed her family, her friends, and the simple joys of her old life. “This is a beautiful city,” Leo said, his voice cold and detached. “A perfect place for a man of business.” Blanca forced a smile. “I suppose so,” she replied, her voice barely a whisper. “You seemed unhappy,” Leo said, turning to face her. “was there something wrong?” Blanca hesitated. She didn’t want to reveal her true feelings to this cold, calculating man. “No,” she said, her voice shaking slightly. “Yes I’m fine.” Leo raised an eyebrow. “Are you sure?" Blanca nodded her heart pounded in her chest. She knew she had a long road ahead of her. She was trapped in a loveless marriage, a prisoner in her own golden cage. But she determined to survive; to find a way to make the best of her situation. Filled with optimism,” I would fight for my happiness; for my freedom, and for the love that I know is out there, waiting for me”.She concluded.
