I heard her put the phone back down on the receiver and the line went dead. I didn’t allow myself a moment to think before jumping out of my chair and sprinting out of the room. The guards certainly seemed alarmed by my behaviour, but I couldn’t stop and tell them everything was fine. I have to get to Aris before that phone rings. He can’t be as blindsighted as I was, not when it is this important.
The halls of the palace passed around me in a blur of gold and candlelight. Almost everyone had gone to bed already, only the night guards and some of the servants still remained. They jumped to the sides of the hallways as I ran by, though no matter how much my sudden appearance surprised them, none of them dared to ask me what was going on.
