CHAPTER 1
“I wasn't expecting you back from jail so soon. A lot of things have happened since you left, you know. Things are not the same and we can't be together anymore.”
“Since I left?” Katherine queried.
She couldn't believe what her husband was telling her. She wished she could understand even a bit of what Lincoln was saying because she wasn't even sure that he was the same man who said he couldn't wait for her return.
“Yes, since you left Katherine, you are not deaf, are you?”
Sweat was forming on Katherine’s forehead as the words made their way into her ears. Lincoln’s words were like daggers to her fragile heart. “Why are you saying that as if I went on some vacation to the Bahamas or I traveled to enjoy myself at the beach all these months? I was even lucky to have my jail time cut short.”
“You may find it lucky for you but the same doesn't apply to me. You were expected to spend 12 months in jail, weren't you? You are out in 6 months claiming that I should somehow understand.”
Tears were glistening in Katherine’s eyes as her cheeks flushed in sadness. “How wicked could a man possibly be? I spent the last 6 months in prison so that I could take the fall for an offense that was committed by you and your family,” she uttered.
Lincoln Moore’s eyes were red in anger as he shot dark glares toward Katherine. “Who do you think you are? My savior? I have told you that things have changed now - six months is quite a long time for a lot of change to happen. Even the country doesn't have the same president it had six months ago.”
Katherine whimpered in disbelief, her heart sunken into her tummy. Is that what Lincoln thought it was all about? Some sort of joke?
Lincoln Moore never showed signs of hostility towards Katherine before she got into jail. Everything was going as fine as it could go. They got married 2 years ago. They had always talked about beautiful places they could go on vacation.
Katherine could recall how happy she was that she had gotten pregnant for Lincoln but she was too anxious to reveal the news too early. She was going to tell him on one of his visits to the prison facility but Lincoln never visited or sent letters.
The wealthy Moore family was accused of having illegal dealings involving Ponzi offenses and due to the connections that the Moore family had, they were able to get the authorities on their side on the condition that they provided a member of their family who would take the fall for the Ponzi offenses.
Lincoln convinced his wife to take the fall for them because having any of the other members of the Moore family go to jail meant that their business could crash quickly. He promised to pull off as many strings as he could to ensure that he got her out in very little time and that they were back together as a family.
Katherine eventually agreed and it turned out to become her doom. Did Lincoln even know that she was pregnant? He couldn't possibly pretend as if he didn't see the baby bump on her, could he? The thoughts were coming in thick and fast as Katherine tried to get a grasp of the horror show that she was witnessing.
She couldn't hide it anymore.
“Look, Lincoln. There is something I have to tell you - I am pregnant,” she said, wiping the tears that had gathered by the corner of her eye in the hope that Lincoln would stop his strange attitude.
Lincoln’s face was as hard as a rock, unshaken as he ransacked his wardrobe. “And how does that concern me? Like I said, it's been months now and you could have gotten pregnant for anyone”.
“What?! Do I have to explain and give you reasons to make you believe that I am pregnant for you? Is that what you want?” Katherine asked, her voice breaking in between the tears she was fighting so hard.
“Since you are so surprisingly interested in what I want, this is what I want - I want a divorce right away,” Lincoln sneered, bringing out a bunch of stapled paper from his wardrobe and slamming them on the sofa.
“Here, that is a divorce agreement which I need you to sign right away.”
Katherine’s vision became blurry. She couldn't see the content of the document but she could see the heading of the writing titled “Divorce Agreement” boldly stated.
She fell to her knees, her hand clasped in shame. “Please don't do this. You can’t possibly abandon me after everything I have been through for you and your family. I haven't done anything to warrant the treatment I am getting.”
“My decision is final, Katherine. I am sure you will find your way out of this but we both know that our marriage wasn't based on love,” Lincoln said, remaining adamant.
Katherine was about to plead further but was interrupted by the ringing of Lincoln’s cell phone. His phone was on loudspeaker so Katherine could hear everything.
“I bet your d*ck is already so hard at the sound of my voice,” a female voice spoke through the phone. Her voice was smooth and saucy - one could tell that she was very hot.
But there was something more to the voice. It sounded familiar to Katherine. She didn't want to believe that it was the same person she had in her mind. It had to be her mind playing tricks on her.
Lincoln licked his lips slightly in arousal to the utter disappointment of Katherine who trembled on her feet, her temperature rising suddenly. Who was the lady on the phone? Did Lincoln already have someone he was dating?
“Are you already at home,” the voice spoke again.
“Yes, waiting to have that beautiful body that I can't get over on my bed yet again,” Lincoln responded, a happy smile on his face.
“Guess what? I am just by the door,” she teased.
Katherine could hear everything. Her breath quickened as she glanced back and forth. “Who is by the door?” She asked, confusedly.
A smug smile formed at the corner of Lincoln’s lips as he ended the call.
“My wife of course,” he uttered, responding to Katherine. “You had all the time in the world to sign the f*****g divorce papers. I guess you will now have it the hard way.”
Katherine gritted her teeth in frustration before quivering her lips.
“What?! Your wife?” She asked.
