As the days went by, I found myself spending more and more time with Max. We'd study together, grab lunch together, and even partner up for group projects.
Jake, my boyfriend, didn't seem too thrilled about our newfound friendship. He'd make snide comments about Max, saying that he was "trying too hard" or that he was "just trying to get in my pants."
I tried to brush off Jake's concerns, telling him that Max was just a friend. But deep down, I knew that my feelings for Max went far beyond friendship.
One day, as Max and I were studying for a math test, he turned to me and asked, "Hey, Emily? Can I ask you something?"
I nodded, curious. "What is it?"
"Do you ever feel like you're stuck in a rut?" Max asked, his eyes locked on mine.
I hesitated, unsure of how to answer. But something about Max's gaze made me feel like I could be honest with him.
"Yeah, I do," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "I feel like I'm just going through the motions with Jake. We've been together for so long, but sometimes I feel like we're just pretending to be happy."
Max nodded, his expression understanding. "I know how you feel," he said. "I've been there too."
As we talked, I felt a sense of connection with Max that I'd never felt with Jake. It was like we were speaking our own language, one that only we could understand.
But as the conversation went on, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being unfaithful to Jake. I was torn between my loyalty to my boyfriend and my growing feelings for Max.
As we packed up our things to leave, Max turned to me and said, "Hey, Emily? Can I walk you to your car?"
I nodded, feeling a flutter in my chest. As we walked, the tension between us was palpable.
I knew that I had to make a decision. Was I going to pursue my feelings for Max, or was I going to stay loyal to Jake?
Either way, I knew that my life was about to get a whole lot more complicated.
