As Max and I walked to my car, the tension between us was palpable. I could feel his eyes on me, and I knew that he was thinking the same thing I was.
We reached my car, and Max turned to me, his eyes locked on mine. "Emily, can I ask you something?" he said, his voice low and husky.
I nodded, my heart racing with anticipation. "What is it?"
Max took a step closer to me, his face inches from mine. "Do you ever think about me?" he asked, his eyes burning with intensity.
I felt a flutter in my chest as I met Max's gaze. I knew that I couldn't lie to him, not anymore.
"Yes," I whispered, my voice barely audible. "I do."
Max's eyes flashed with excitement, and he took another step closer to me. I could feel his breath on my skin, and I knew that I was in trouble.
Just as Max was about to kiss me, I heard a voice behind us. "Emily, what's going on here?"
I turned to see Jake standing behind us, his eyes narrowed with suspicion. Max took a step back, his eyes never leaving mine.
"Jake, I can explain," I started to say, but Jake cut me off.
"No, Emily, I don't think you can," he said, his voice cold and detached. "I think I know exactly what's going on here."
I felt a pang of guilt as I looked at Jake. I knew that I had hurt him, and I didn't know how to make it right.
As the three of us stood there, the tension between us was palpable. I knew that something had to give, but I didn't know what.
And then, without another word, Jake turned and walked away, leaving Max and me standing there, alone and unsure of what to do next.
