Nora’s heart wasn’t at peace as she saw Mary packing up her things to leave the house. Nora knew it was because of her that Mary was being sent out of the house. I wouldn’t have involved Mary in all this, Nora said to herself.
Mary who was uncertain of where she is headed looked at Nora with tears in her eyes and told her that everything is going to be fine. Mary then Appeared in front of Derick, with the look on Derick’s face, Mary can tell that it is better to leave the house than to face the wrath of Derick.
Derick then asked her a question. Mary who told you to do it, Derick asked? Mary who didn’t want to involve Nora in this told Derick that nobody told her to do it. Derick then told her to get out and she should never return.
Nora came downstairs and she saw that Mary had gone and was no longer coming back. Nora just sat on the sofa regretting why she involved Mary in all of this. Nora started thinking of many times she had made plans to escape but yet all of them never worked out.
It was at this point that Nora began to accept the fact that she is going to get married to Derick and there was nothing that could be done about it. Derick came downstairs and saw Nora lost in her thoughts, he then touched her and reminded her that their wedding is in three days time and he left the house.
As Nora heard that it was three days to her wedding, she became sad and moody again. Nora did not know what to do again because all her plans to escape had been thwarted. Nora wanted to eat so she called on Mary but she got no response, she then realized that Mary was no longer in the house.
Nora went into the kitchen by herself and she prepared what she was going to eat and went upstairs. Nora hasn’t heard from her parents in a while and it was beginning to bother her. She told herself that she would ask Derick if she could speak to her parents.
Derick came back and he asked Nora if anyone came to visit him but Nora told him that nobody came to visit him. Nora was wondering who could be coming to see him because ever since she came to his house, Nobody has come to see him, he was always the one going out.
Nora did not know how to tell Derick that she wanted to call her parents but either way she just had to tell him. To Nora’s surprise, derick accepted her request and she placed a call through her parents and she spoke at length with her parents. Her parents were so happy to hear from her.
It’s been a long time since Nora smiled the way she did after speaking to her parents. It is two more days to the wedding and Nora was so restless and unhappy because she didn’t know how to face the crowd and do all those things that happens during weddings.
Derick has been so busy making plans for the wedding. Derick has been making sure that the wedding is going to be a success. Derick has waited for this time to come for a long time now and finally, it is coming to reality.
Nora on the other hand didn’t have the same enthusiasm that Derick is having because it wasn’t her choice to get married to Derick. Since Nora could not do anything about her getting married to Derick, she just had to put herself together and embrace what life has for her.
Derick woke up in the middle of the night and it was then he remembered he hasn’t informed Nora about their pre-wedding photos. So Derick told her that they would be having their pre-wedding photos by tomorrow. Derick spoke to Nora in a way that seemed like she didn’t have a choice.
Nora who actually didn’t have a choice just laid on the bed as she didn’t want to start thinking about anything. Nora battled with the reality of getting married to Derick. As the day for the marriage drew closer, she became more uncomfortable.
Nora’s heart sank as she gazed at her reflection. the expensive dress, the flawless make up and her styled hair, all seemed like a pretence, a costume to hide her true feelings.
She turned and told Derick “Derick I don’t know if i can do this”. Her voice barely above a whisper. Nora has never taken pictures without her having a true smile but this time around, it was a different kind of situation entirely
Derick turned from adjusting his tie and he asked Nora what she meant by she wasn’t sure if she could do this. Derick told her to take some photos and smile for the camera.
Nora’s eyes filled with tears turned and she told Derick “Derick why would i smile when I don’t seem happy that we are getting married, i can’t pretend to love you Derick”. It was the first time Nora was letting out her displeasure to him.
Derick’s face hardened after hearing what Nora said, “ your father agreed to this Nora so what the hell are you saying about pretending to love me? Did you expect me to pay your father’s hospital bills and not get anything in return?
Derick said all this to her without any iota of pity for her.
They finished having their photos and they drove back home. While in the car, Derick told Nora that she should not act the way she did today at their wedding the next day. Derick made it clear that he wasn’t going to tolerate any form of her behavior towards his guests the next day.
They got home late due to traffic congestion. As they got home, Derick went upstairs to the bathroom to have his shower while Nora got herself something to eat and went back upstairs. Tomorrow seemed liked a nightmare to Nora but as she stared at her wedding gown, she knew that it is going to be a reality and she slept off.
It was the day of Nora’s wedding and Nora heart felt so heavy and tensed as she stood at the altar, facing Derrick. The grand church was filled with large congregations and guests but she only saw her father's frail figure in the front row, his eyes pleading with her to go through with the ceremony.
Derrick's eyes, on the other hand, gleamed with triumph. He had won, and she had lost.
As the priest began to speak, Nora's mind wandered back to the events that had led her here. Nora wished she could turn back the hands of time and find another way to save her father’s life but it was already too late.
Now, she was trapped in a loveless marriage, bound to a man who only wanted her for his own gain.
As they exchanged vows, Derrick's grip on her hand tightened, as if he sensed her apprehension. Nora forced a smile, her eyes locked on her father's face.
It was now time for them to kiss each other, it was at this time that Nora wished that the ground could open and swallow her. The kiss was brief, perfunctory, lacking any spark of passion of love
As they danced, Derrick's hold was possessive, his eyes warning her not to try and escape or behave the she did at their pre-wedding photos Nora felt like a prisoner, trapped in a gilded cage.
As they drove away from the reception, Derick’s hand were on her knee, Nora knew she had to find a way reclaim her life, her freedom and her heart
