Chapter Twenty-nine
The Wig and Gown was a well-known legal haunt where Matthew had spent many pleasant hours some years ago, but on this occasion, he was both wary of the invitation and pessimistic of the outcome. The last time he had spoken to Fenella was a decade ago, when she had threatened him during a blazing argument, following Matthew’s arrest after the MacGregor trial. She had severed all contact with him, believing a conviction was certain, until he sensationally proved his innocence at court. When he rejected her apology, she had transformed into the aggrieved party and had promised retaliation. Matthew now rarely ventured into the city whereas Fenella worked there exclusively and their paths had not crossed since.
