07: Can’t get any worse

Ria's POV. The sudden silence that enveloped the room was almost deafening as it made my skin crawl with sparks of dread. With the wine glass in my grip, I glanced at him as I swallowed the lump that seemed to rise in my throat. What exactly was he trying to do? One minute he was my biggest nightmare and the next, he happens to be my knight in shining armor, how was he able to do this so effortlessly? And coming to think that he slid his hands underneath my skin earlier, and yet he'd chosen not to talk about it, instead, he'd come apologizing. “I huh—” The rest of the words died in my throat as he cut me off. “Of course, I don't expect you to forgive me immediately, but I'll work towards it.” he said, pointing a finger through his wine glass with emphasis as he took a step towards me. As he did, my survival instincts kicked in. Although, I wasn't in danger or perhaps, my heart had seen him as one but as he took that step towards me, I took reverse steps. Withdrawing myself from him, his face crinkled in confusion while mine on the other hand was masked with fear. “Are we going to do this right now?” he asked, taking a sip from his wine glass. “Do what?” I asked, even though the words seemed to drag themselves from my throat. “I am not doing anything with you.” My voice shook a little as I tried to evade his gaze. “Well, something tells me otherwise.” he said, something in his voice made me look up. “What does it seem to you that's going to happen right now? Oh, you must have no idea. But, I do. I think you're trying to play hide and seek with me, and I'll gladly do that.” “Hide and what?” — the retort sprang from my lips on their own accord as I gave out a laughing scoff. “Of course not, I mean why would you think that I want to play hide and seek with you? Even if I wanted to, not in here.” “Alright then, let's just say I misunderstood your intentions.” he said, taking yet another step towards me. Perhaps, he must have thought that I would have sold myself off to the conversation and wouldn't notice when he took another step, but he failed to realize that my eyes were registering a lot of things. Most especially, his movements. So as he took yet another step toward me, I withdrew myself again by taking a reverse step. As I did that, a shadow of dismay crossed his face making it rather obvious that he wasn't pleased with my decision to withdrew from him. But then, I don't want to consider him an enemy. In fact, to begin with I didn't want to find myself in the middle of all these in the first place, but my feelings for Carlos had made me take up this task because this happened to be the only way he'd mentioned that we could be together again even after he pulled that stunt back there by choosing another mate for himself. He happened to be Carlos's enemy but could soon be mine if he continued with his actions. But you want to know what I've learned about dealing with enemies? Alright, I'll tell you. Whenever you're eating with one, use a long spoon. I want to believe that explains why I've been withdrawing myself from him just so that I could increase the distance between us because should it happen that we got close enough which would be synonymous to using a short spoon, then I really can't tell what would happen. “Are you still mad at me for what happened earlier?” he asked, spreading out his arms with a smile on his lips as if to show that the world was at his beck and call. “If it happens that you're still mad at me then that shows that I'm not really forgiven. So please…” He paused, shooting his gaze past me for a minute as the smile on his lips deepened, throwing me into a well of confusion before returning his gaze to me. “Allow me to make it up to you.” he added, taking yet another step towards me. Like I'd done before and would continue to do as long as he takes a step towards me, I attempted to shuffle a step backward but this time I couldn't as I came in contact with the wall behind me. It was a dead end. As I realized that, my heart seemed to plummet into my stomach as the thought of what could happen in a split second stormed my mind causing a cold sweat to film my body. It was then it occurred to me that that was the very reason why he shot his gaze past me, he knew quite well that I'd come to a dead end and perhaps, that was his plan all along. How could I have been so naive not to figure that out? Not wanting to believe that it was really the end, I pressed my free hand against the wall, searching for an escape route that wasn't there. It was either I found a way or I created one, but neither of those two options seemed like something that would work out at that point. Accepting my fate, I drew in a deep calming breath as I watched him draw closer to me with that cynical smile that creased his face. “Aren't you going to take one more step away from me?” he asked, with a hint of sarcasm in his voice as the smile on his lips deepened. “Oh, you can't because it's a dead end.” “W—why are you doing this?” I stuttered, choking out my words. Taking one more step, he brought his face closer to me as if trying to initiate a kiss. In response to that, I turned my face to the side and squeezed my eyes shut. His breath stirred my skin as he pushed a strand of hair behind my ear while he spoke, spelling out his words. “I—found—you.”
