05: An unfinished business

1050 Words
Ria's POV. His presence didn't just send cold chills down my spine, but it also made my skin crawl with sparks of dread. Not to mention that his voice made me feel a sudden coldness that hits at the core and to think that he'd actually followed me down here for some reason just made my heart seem to turn over. Staring at him while he stood at the door, my lips part a little while my head imagined the worst that could happen in that single moment. Announcing his presence with that question, he ambled towards myself and Matthew with hands clasped behind him and a cynical smile pushing his lips to the side as if to say, ‘I finally have you exactly where I want you to be’. If anything, I didn't like the smile that creased his face because it made me feel like I'd gotten on his bad side already. However, I knew that he wouldn't want to do anything out of the line because Matthew was with me. At the same time, I also didn't want to rule out the possibility of him doing something outrageous. So as he approached towards me, I swallowed the lump that seemed to rise in my throat as I angled my body to face him. “I just asked a question and I want to believe that neither of you is dumb, right?” he asked, his brows merging into a savage line as the cynical smile on his lips deepened while darting his gaze back and forth expecting an answer from either of us. “I huh—” I tried speaking, but the rest of the words died in my throat the moment Matthew cut me off. “Nothing much.” he said, turning to face me as he shot a subtle wink at me to play along. “We were only trying to find a common ground as regards issues concerning the ball.” “Well, I would appreciate it if the lady decides to speak for herself, or isn't that so?” Zade asked, turning to face me with a raised brow. I didn't know whatever scheme he was trying to pull again. The first was enough already, and I didn't think that my mind was prepared for another. If anything, I'd had enough of his silly jokes for the night and the only thing I wanted to do was to get some rest. However, it seemed like he had other plans in mind which I was certain that I wouldn't like. “You aren't wrong.” I said, forcing a smile through my lips. “Like he said, we were just trying to find a common ground, nothing more.” “Very well then, now that I've heard from her then it's all good.” he said, with a hint of sarcasm in his voice. “But then, you'll have to pardon me because it seems like I also have to find a common ground with her too.” As the words broke from his lips, my heart seemed to plummet into my stomach as a look of confusion seemed to mask my face while I turned to face Matthew with eyes soliciting for an explanation. However, it seemed like he also didn't know what Zade meant by those words. So, I returned my attention to him. “I don't think I understand what you mean by that.” I said, even though the words seemed to drag themselves from my throat. “Last I checked, only people who get into some sort of arguments are the ones that tend to find a common ground and I don't think that I've gotten into an argument with you so, what do you mean by that?” “You leave me with no option but to ask, did you have an argument with him?” he asked, narrowing his gaze at the words as he darted his gaze back and forth. As he asked, Matthew and I exchanged puzzled glances for a moment, then I returned my attention to him, still bereft of words. It was rather obvious that he had this all planned out in his head before making his move. Else, things wouldn't have played out this way. No matter how I thought about it, I had no answer to his question, and it was safe to say that he'd caught me. “That is what I thought too.” he added, flashing a smile across my worried face. “Now if you don't mind, I'll like you to come with me.” He extended a hand towards me. D However, dropping my eyes to his extended hand, I drew in a deep, calming breath. I needed to be sure that I wasn't getting myself into another form of trouble or would be getting myself into another form of trouble by taking his hand. After glancing at his hand for a moment, I lifted my eyes to his face. “How sure am I that I won't be getting myself into trouble if I take your hand.” I asked, shooting suspicious glances at him. “Well, there's only one way to know, isn't that so?” he asked, raising a brow with a slight tilt of his head. “You will never know until you take my hand.” Left to me, I wouldn't take his hand. Not after what he did back there. However, on the one hand, he was the alpha and so, disobedience might attract some sort of punishment. On the other hand, I wasn't ready to blow my cover yet. So, either ways, I had to do as he had said. “Very well then.” I said, receiving his hand. “As your lordship pleases.” “Off you go.” he said, sending Matthew away with a dismissive wave of his hand. After he'd done that, he turned to face me with a smile on his lips to make me feel safe with him. However, his action was in sharp contrast with his word. Even though he preserved the smile on his lips making it seem like everything was fine, his grip around me tightened. “We still have an unfinished business, or don't we?”
