09: A close call

Ria's POV. I don't know if my wolf was trying to punish me, but if that was the case, then for what exactly? Because the embarrassment was becoming too much, and I couldn't stand it anymore. Or perhaps, was it angry with me because I chose to do this for Carlos even after rejecting me? Even if that was the case, at least it shouldn't be doing this now, not even in front of his uncle who was beginning to suspect that something was wrong. Once would have been enough but twice would convince him that something was definitely wrong, and it would be rather difficult to deny it. I was yet to figure out what she, my wolf, meant earlier by calling alpha Zade my mate however, she was even going ahead to wreck more havoc by accepting every of his words and desires. It wasn't supposed to be so. If I was a desperate girl acting like that towards a guy then he would conclude that I've got no worth. And the same could be said about alpha Zade too. If she, my wolf, continued to accept his every request then he would only see her as cheap, nothing more nothing less and that was the last thing that I would want. For one, Carlos had shown me the pain of being considered cheap, and I would be a bad student not to learn from my experience. “Of course, nothing is wrong.” I said, flashing a smile across his confused face. And to prove it to him, I gulped down the entire content of the wine glass in my grip. However, as I did, I glanced at him through the corners of my eyes and in synchrony with the rising of the wine glass as I swallowed its content, he lifted his head with a look of surprise masking his face and when I was done, he dropped his face as the rim of the wine glass and my lips parted ways. “What was that for?” he asked, righting himself from the bed with a look of shock masking his face. In all honesty, I didn't even know what I was doing when I decided to gulp down the entire liquid, but I needed to kill every doubt within him that I was doing just fine. However, even with that, it seemed like he didn't buy into that action of mine. Instead, he made a half-turn as he ambled round the bed. “What are you talking about?” I asked, even though I knew the answer in my heart. “What was what for?” “Don't try to play dumb, you literally finished the drink at a go, why did you do that?” he asked, squinting his eyes at the words as he shuffled a step towards me. “You could have gotten yourself killed or don't you know that?” If it could, then I never thought of that before now. If anything, my mind was only occupied with the thoughts of trying to convince him that I wasn't losing my mind because my wolf kept getting ahead of me which was rather embarrassing. “I am sorry if I tried to get myself killed, but you should know that it wasn't intentional.” I said, shaking my head as I spoke the words. “Is that true? I mean, since you got in here have you done something with clear intentions so far?” he asked, raising a brow as he shuffled another step towards me. I was already in contact with the wall behind me, so I knew better than to take reverse steps or try to run from him. Instead, I just remained where I was. “I don't know what you're talking about.” I said, even though the words seemed to drag themselves from my throat. “Alright, I'll let you know what I'm talking about.” he said, taking yet another step towards me. “What I am trying to say is—” The rest of the words died in his throat as a knock on the door paused our conversation. As the knock fell on the door, a feeling of dread stirred in the pit of my stomach. Glancing at him, it was obvious that he wasn't expecting anyone. He'd mentioned earlier that no one would disturb since he'd told them that he wanted some time alone, so who could it be? “Are you expecting someone?” I asked, my stomach giving a curious twist as I said the words. “Not any that I can remember, but you should stay here while I go check out who's behind the door.” he said, flashing a smile across my worried face. This was the very thing that I was avoiding — getting caught by someone else. I mean, they wouldn't even care to know the reason I'm here before jumping into conclusions. I'd barely gotten here, and it would be unhealthy to start off by making enemies and not friends even though I knew that I really don't need any friend apart from Matthew. As Zade ambled towards the door to get it, I pressed a fist to my mouth as I began to pace back and forth in short spans while also stealing glances at the door and hoping that I hadn't gotten myself into trouble. Before long, he arrived at the door and immediately, a conversation ensued between himself and whoever was at the door. Since the door wasn't so far from me, I could hear their voices. “Is there anyone in there with you?” — the feminine voice came from a distance. “What are you talking about?” Zade asked, gripping the door frame with one hand and the door with his other hand while standing in between to block out whoever it was that he was talking to from trying to gain entrance or have a glimpse into the room. “I definitely heard another voice in there.” she said, insisting that she didn't hear wrong. “What are you up to?” As the woman at the door wouldn't back down with her questions, out of curiosity, I decided to know who it was because no one would question him this much except — I slowly tilted my head to the side and then stole a glance at the door, to prove my guess right, it was Vivian who was at the door. As I saw her, I quickly lowered my head to better take cover. Fortunately, she didn't see me when I stole that glance. Realizing that it was her and knowing that she could gain entrance into the bedroom if she persisted, my heart seemed to plummet into my stomach. “It could have been anything or have you forgotten that there are a lot of people in here?” he asked, trying to convince her that she might have heard wrong. “You aren't entirely wrong but that reminds me, why did you ask for the gates to be shut?”
