It turns out that changing back into a human was not as easy as it should have been. I was stuck in wolf form for a week.
That would have been fine if the doctor had left me alone, I would have slipped out of Iris’s territory and been on my way.
Violet came to see me a few times but she was always turned away. There was something off about her smell now.
I could sense she was not happy with the fact that she was being turned away, I am still not sure why she was being turned away as well.
It was the last day I was stuck in wolf form when Felix came to visit. He looked out the door of the room I was in to make sure no one was around.
“I was told that I needed to come back and help you change back. Well I think Avery is just tired of having you around since you’re not an anomaly anymore.” He smiled at me and I shrank back. I still didn’t trust him and I never will.
I suppose I was grateful for him triggering my wolf, now my body won’t tear itself apart trying to deal with the spawn of Evan in me.
“You don’t need to trust me and I am not going to force myself on you Madison. I just want to help. That is all for now.” I could see he was in pain, maybe the mate bond was stronger for men. I did not want to be bothered by it, I just wanted to leave.
There was a knock on the door and I scurried to the far corner eyeing the door with my lips pulled back, she smelled even worse today. It was as if her body was rotting from the inside and it just oozed through her pores.
“You want me to send her away? I thought she was your friend?” He glanced at me with raised brows and I narrowed my eyes at him.
“I can’t explain it, she smells weird and I noticed when I first shifted that something was weird about her.” He shrugged and made his way to the door, I scurried under the bed and inwardly groaned at the floor pressing on my pregnant stomach.
This was uncomfortable but I didn’t want to see Violet.
“Is my friend in here? I haven’t seen her for a week and I am so worried about her.” I bit down on the growl that wanted to escape.
“Liar, it tastes like bitter pills on my tongue. Does this come with being a wolf? How unpleasant, useful but not pleasant.” I saw Felix’s shoulders tense slightly and he bit the side of his cheek.
Violet narrowed her eyes and tried to look past Felix as he blocked the doorway.
“She is my best friend you can’t keep me from seeing her.” It was faint but I caught the sound of a small pulse.
“She is pregnant with Evan’s child. There is something not right about her baby though.” Felix’s gaze flickered into the room but he didn’t give my position away.
“I don’t know what to tell you. I came to see her and see if I could get her to change back but she wasn’t here. Maybe they took her for a walk in the mountains or maybe she bolted. I know she wanted to run.” Why was there a slightly accusatory tone in his voice?
It wasn’t as if I asked for all this. I am glad I met my wolf but I sure as hell didn’t want a mate. Nothing good ever came from being tied to a man or another person.
I was better off by myself.
“If you say so, her things have been moved out of my place as well.” Felix let out a sigh and pinched the bridge of his nose.
I could sense he was getting tired of Violet and her demands.
“Violet, is it? I’m her mate, I demanded that she move her things into where I am staying.” Violet let out an angry huff and turned to stalk away.
A nasty smile spread on her lips as she stared at Felix.
“Prepare to have your soul shattered, she will never accept a mate. Evan made damn sure of that. Anyone that tries to claim his toys after he is done with them will suffer.” She stalked off and I peered out from under the bed.
Felix slammed the door and leaned heavily against it.
“I’m not sure what happened to you in your past and with your permission, I would like to investigate Evan. I am not doing it to stake any claim on you. I just want to make sure you are safe.” I crawled out from under the bed.
My body started to tingle and the burning feeling was back as my limbs changed and everything hurt like I was dipped in boiling lava.
I bit back a scream of pain, that was one thing about living with Evan, you learned to hide your pain when he was torturing you.
“Please tell me this gets easier and less painful after a few more tries.” Felix’s lips twitched and he handed a blanket to me. He kept his eyes averted and I found that odd.
“I don’t want to offend you or run you off in any way. I told you Madison, as my mate I will try to do everything in my power to make you feel comfortable and safe.” I wrapped myself in the blanket and had to admit his chivalry was somewhat endearing.
Shaking my head and straightened my shoulders and banished any warm fuzzy feelings from my thoughts.
“Thank you for telling her to go away. She is also pregnant with Evan’s child, but there is something seriously wrong with her.” I chewed on my lip waiting for his response.
“You smelled it as well. I don’t know why I didn’t pick up on it before.” He came over and raised his hand. I instinctively flinched away and he curled his fingers back, pulling his hand back, I saw the sadness in his eyes.
“I hope one day you can trust me Madison, I mean you no harm and will do everything in my power to keep you safe.” I looked down at my feet and held my breath.
“I’m not going to tell you what you can do. I will just warn you to be safe if you’re going to investigate Evan. I’m exhausted, I just want to sleep.” Curling up in a fetal position on the bed I turned my back to him and heard him leave.
“As you wish.” I snorted as he closed the door.
“Cheeky jerk, using Wesley’s lines from The Princess Bride on me. It still won’t endear me to you. I’m leaving as soon as wake up from this nap.” No one told me that shifting would take such a toll on my body.
I guess that is to be expected though. I wonder if they have a Shifters Guide for Dummies book.
