“Why were you two packing?” the voices sounded muffled as if there was a wad of cotton in my ears.
“She thinks that Evan will find her and drag her back. It doesn’t matter that it isn’t a rational thought. She believes he will drag her back because of the baby.” Violet sounded bored and maybe I was wrong in trusting her as well.
“Ladies, I believe this is probably my fault.” That man again, his name was Felix, it caused my pulse to skyrocket, and the machines I was hooked up to started to alarm.
Doctors came running in and I wanted to rip the IV lines out of my arms. One minute I was thrashing on the bed and the next I was on the floor crawling on all fours.
I blinked and stared at Violet, Felix, and Iris. They were staring at me in shock and awe.
“That has never happened before.” I stared down at the floor and saw I had furry white feet. I scrambled backwards and tripped over my back legs which were just as gangly and hairy as my front legs.
“Has she never shifted?” Iris seemed to be in shock. I snapped at the doctor who tried to touch me and he pulled his hand back.
“I don’t know, I just met her recently. The rumors that she has never shifted must be true.” Something about Violet’s tone set my inner alarm bells off.
Felix was the only one who didn’t seem to be freaking out or looking at me as if I were some medical experiment.
I let out a whimper of fear as Felix approached, I didn’t like how he made me feel and he did this to me. I don’t know why this happened. I was kept ignorant of the workings of wolves.
“There is no need to fear me. Why were you running away?” His voice was soothing but my body was still coiled, ready in fight or flight mode.
“This shouldn’t be happening, why am I like this? As far as I knew, I was cursed and not able to shift. I didn’t even know I had a wolf.” The panic made it hard to breathe.
“How very interesting, I heard everything you just said.” I blinked at him as he reached his hand out to touch me again.
I growled and he closed his hand and pulled it back slowly. Nothing was threatening about him, he seemed to be in awe of me.
“You’re beautiful, I know this is stressful. I’m sorry for that. I will also leave you alone if you wish. Please come to me if you have any questions or concerns.” He spoke with such reverence but I still could not muster the courage to trust him.
“Why do you care so much? You’re just another man, an Alpha. You’ll do nothing but hurt me!” I wanted to run away; it was easier now that I had a wolf form. That still struck me as odd.
“Can you understand what she is saying? All I am getting is a bunch of growls and whimpers.” Violet was studying me with narrowed eyes and I backed away from her hostile glare.
I needed to get away from her. I don’t know why I never saw it in the beginning but I was sure that she was not all that she claimed to be.
“Of course I can understand her, I heard every word she said.” Felix stood up and smiled warmly at me. I couldn’t help but look at Violet again. He caught the look I was giving her and he frowned.
“That is amazing, I have only heard of that in a few rare cases.” Iris seemed stunned and genuinely fascinated.
Felix shrugged and smiled. “This is new to me as well.”
He glanced at Violet and frowned again.
“What is the relationship between you two?” She looked down at her feet and I could sense that she was uneasy.
“We met by chance and escaped Evan’s tyranny together. We have become sisters in arms of sorts.” I could smell something strange about her words, wrinkling my nose I shook my head. That was odd, Felix glanced at me out of the corner of his eyes.
“Can you hear me?” I snorted and stared at his back.
“You don’t have to yell. I can hear you loud and clear.” He chuckled and then quickly hid his mirth.
Violet watched us like a cat getting ready to pounce on an unsuspecting mouse.
“Fair enough, I saw the look you gave your friend. Do you want to go back to living with her?” Was he really giving me an option? I wasn’t used to this. I couldn’t explain why I was feeling like this now toward the woman who saved me.
“I’m not sure I trust her anymore. I can’t explain it, I would rather not go back to our place.” I would rather not stay here, and the first opportunity I had, I would run far away from this place and this man.
“Are you able to hear her thoughts?” Violet seemed a bit too interested in my affairs with this strange man.
“I can communicate with her telepathically is that a problem Miss?” His tone was cold and calculated. It made Violet shrink in on herself and mumble under her breath.
“Isn’t it rude to talk to each other like that while there are others in the room?” Iris looked appalled at Violet.
“I apologize, it is something that I was not aware that I could do. I merely tested a theory and asked her a question.” His words were a half-truth, I could smell the lie in them, it was like a bitter rotten orange.
Who knew that lies could have a scent? Was this something that came with being a wolf?
“I still think it is rude. So her collapse had something to do with you?” I was sure that my current predicament had something to do with him as well.
“I can actually shed some light on that.” I let out a growl as my doctor came into the room. She glanced at me and raised an eyebrow.
“Do share what you know, because one minute my friend is perfectly fine and this man shows up and she passes out. They said her blood pressure and temperature spiked to deadly levels.” I curled my lip as I watched Violet.
I hope it was just the hormones making me paranoid, it had to be the trauma of living with Evan for so many years.
“Well since she never shifted before it is to be expected. Felix here is an Alpha and he was able to call her wolf forth from the depths that it was hiding. Her soul was broken hence why she could never shift.” That surprisingly made some sense.
“So Iris is an Alpha and Evan was as well.” The doctor glared at Violet and rolled her eyes.
“You wouldn’t understand pack magic because you are human. Yes, Iris is an Alpha but she is not Madison’s mate. Only a mate can pull forth a wolf from someone who is soul broken.” Violet chewed on her lip and she seemed to be calculating the information.
“There have been tales of mates being able to call forth the wolf of another. Why did her wolf emerge so violently though?” I wanted to know as well. The doctor looked like she was done playing teacher to all of us.
“He is an Alpha; an Alpha can call forth any wolf. Since he is her mate and she is destined to be his Luna, his wolf becomes a little over-eager to meet his mate. Now if you will all kindly leave, I need to check my patient.” Everyone filed out of the room in shock and deep contemplation.
“I don’t want to go back with Violet.” Felix paused in the doorway and I saw his subtle nod.
Letting out a huff I slumped down on the floor and closed my eyes. Now I was going to have to shift back at some point. I just didn’t know how to do it.
“I will check in on you later. Rest now, your first shift is going to take a toll on your body. I just wanted to get everyone out of the room.” She shot a faint smile in my direction as she turned to leave.
“Oh, and congratulations on meeting your wolf. Treat her well because she will help you with this pregnancy.” I groaned and closed my eyes as she shut the door behind her.
Of course, I would treat her well, I just didn’t know she existed.
