It has been a month; Violet and I have settled into a routine and I have been able to enjoy the beauty of Montana. I decided we needed to be dependent on ourselves and not the pack.
So Violet and I moved into town and we both got jobs. I never worked before and I never had to fend for myself.
Iris assured us that we were welcome on pack land and we could stay as long as we wanted. I suppose a small part of me was still suspicious that they would turn on us. No one can be that accommodating.
Violet kept telling me it was just my trauma talking, that it was safe and we could relax a little bit.
I wish I could be as relaxed as her.
“You should still be on bed rest but if you insist on working, I will let you continue to have your desk job.” I blinked at the doctor. She was still talking to me and I was a million miles away.
“It is only at the local law office, there really isn’t much in the way of work.” Dr. Avery narrowed her eyes at me and I looked away. The woman had a way of making me feel small and as if I were in the wrong.
“There are a few things that I just can’t wrap my mind around and one of them is your rate of healing. It is at half the speed of a healthy lycan, even those who are older than you seem to heal faster. You heal as if you were human.” I winced, that was a punch to the gut.
I was constantly teased because my wolf seemed to be nonexistent. I was a lycan without the ability to shift was practically human. Humans were nothing but food and playthings in the world of lycans.
Although Iris and her pack seem to coexist in harmony with the humans.
“That is a tad insulting Doc.” She snapped off her gloves and motioned for me to pull my shirt down. I had a small baby bump, if people saw me they would just assume I was a little fat or bloated.
“You don’t strike me as the type of woman who would want the truth to be coated in sugar and spoon-fed to you.” She sat on the chair by her computer and was typing in her notes.
“No, but you don’t have to be so blunt about it either.” I muttered as I started getting dressed.
“I’m not here to pander to you Madison. I know what you went through was hard but that doesn’t explain why you are the way you are.” I turned on her in a huff and put my hands on my hips.
“What exactly does that mean?” I knew it was the hormones that were making me snappish, but also her attitude was getting on my nerves.
“It means that the child in your belly is essentially a parasite. It is preventing you from healing, it isn’t helping you in any way and your body is at war with it.” I continued to stare at her wondering what the hell she meant by that?
“It means that your body doesn’t know whether to reject the baby because it is a foreign object that is harming you. Or to keep the baby and grow it because that is what your body is supposed to do with a life growing in you.” That made some sense.
“Until you can unleash your wolf your body is going to be forever at war with itself until the baby is born. Your issue with the placenta is better, however, your body is still under the impression it needs to expel the fetus.” I closed my eyes and leaned heavily against the wall.
“Long story short you need to shift. That is dangerous itself when you are with child. Only the goddess can decide then what happens to the baby.” Oh, so it was just that simple. To shift and everything will reset.
Sure, why didn’t I think of that?
“How do you propose I do that?” She sighed in exasperation.
“Well I’m sorry doc but you see I was sold into slavery when I was younger so no one explained the whole miracle of childbirth and shifting to me.” She took off her glasses and wiped them on her lab coat.
“That is unfortunate for you. The only way to wake up your wolf and to get her to take notice is to actually find your mate.” I let out a bark of laughter and she stared at me as if I were a bug.
“Well then, I guess I am screwed because I don’t plan on having a mate and if I do, I won’t be acting on those impulses. Thanks for the checkup but I am late for work.” She slammed her hand down on the desk and I jumped.
“I am just trying to help you. The other methods of triggering your wolf should have worked. Yet when you were being used as a punching bag it didn’t happen, the only thing I can think of is that you need to find your mate.” My eyes went wide and I clenched my fists.
“I have no intention of finding a mate.” The doctor turned her back on me and then went back to her files.
“I am sorry you feel that way. You will die…or not, I don’t know it is up to your body on what it will decide to do.” I stormed out of her office and slammed the door behind me.
The receptionist was startled and I stalked out of the building and right into a wall.
No, not a wall, a man. An impossibly tall man that screamed Alpha. He put his hands on my arms to steady me and an electric buzz ran through my whole body and I collapsed to my knees on the sidewalk.
He was talking to me but all I could do was gasp and try to calm myself. I heard my pulse pounding in my ears like rushing waves.
I glanced up into his deep amber eyes and saw myself reflected in them.
If I was not mistaken, I may have just found my mate.
“I’m sorry Miss are you ok?” I stumbled to my feet and shuddered.
“I’m fine, clumsy me. Sorry sir!” I hurried away from him but could feel his eyes burning a hole in my back.
I was going to have to stay away from him. Whoever he was, he reeked of trouble and that was something I didn’t need or want in my life at this time.
When Violet got home we were leaving Montana, there was no way I was going to stick around.
