PRESENT He kicked me out with nothing but the clothes on my back. Where was I to go? I couldn’t go back home and I was now a wolf in enemy territory. I heard footsteps behind me as I wrapped my arms around my middle. “Why didn’t you tell me you found your mate Lex?” I sniffed and wiped the tears from my eyes as he watched me with a cool and calculated gaze. “Things change Madison. Evan has shown me the error of my ways.” I let out a ragged laugh and wanted to beat my fists on his chest and cry about it being unfair. “You should never have gone to the party ten years ago. We should never have done what we did.” I narrowed my eyes at him as he mumbled to himself. “YOU TOLD ME THAT YOU WOULD BE WITH ME FOREVER!” I flew at him in desperation and he pushed me away. I fell to the sidewalk hard and pain shot up my back. There was a momentary flicker of sorrow in his eyes and then it was back to the cold stare he reserved for his underlings. “I would say whatever it took to get into your pants. I was a pup and you were eager to give it up. You have twenty-four hours to leave this territory.” He spat on me and walked back into the building I called home for the past ten years. People were watching everything unfold but no one would step up to help me. Evan was a powerful CEO and owned half the city. They were not going to anger the Alpha and the man who paid them. Shivering, I kicked off my shoes and looked around. I couldn’t go back to my family; they sold me and they were done with me. No one in the city would help me for fear of facing Evan’s wrath. I was on my own. Nausea climbed up my throat and I ran into the alley between the buildings and threw up. “That is disgusting.” I gasped and leaned against the wall my heart pounding in my chest. A raggedy-looking girl with torn clothes was staring at me. She glanced around the sidewalk outside the alley and licked her lips. She moved toward me and I cringed away from her. She put her hands up and moved further into the alley. “Look, I saw everything that happened.” I wiped my mouth and continued to eye her warily. “I live in the homeless camp on the South Side.” Narrowing my eyes at her I still couldn’t figure out what she wanted. She sighed and rolled her eyes as if I were stupid. “You have to be out of the city in twenty-four hours. I am going to have to go as well.” My stomach gurgled again and I threw up again. She watched me with her head tilted and shook her head. “I swear you wolves have the oddest customs and laws.” She crossed her arms and continued to watch me. “What is it that you want?” I panted uncomfortably. “Why I want to travel with you. Besides, I think we can help each other.” She moved closer and whispered in my ear. “Besides if your ex-husband finds out you’re pregnant he will kill you.” I reared back in shock. “You lie!” I was never able to carry a baby full term ever since Yara fed me her poison. My inability to conceive was why Evan cheated. “Maybe so, but what choice do you have?” She was right but I was also tired of relying on other people. “Then shift into a wolf and walk out of here.” I grimaced and she laughed at me. “I could never shift.” She shrugged. “Come with me, or don’t your choice. I’m leaving the city by the old subway tunnel tonight. I’m on the Southside if you decide to join me.” She waved and disappeared back into the throng of people on the sidewalk. She was right about one thing, what choice did I have?
