TWO WEEKS LATER Shivering uncontrollably I wrapped the worn jacket around my body and tried to ease the fluttering in my stomach. “I managed to get us a ride to the edge of pack territory. I don’t want to press my luck.” Violet talked in hushed tones as we hid in a ditch outside of the suburbs. We had overstayed our welcome in Evan’s territory. His men were patrolling everywhere for me. “Why are you helping me, Violet?” I was weak with hunger and I was throwing up all the time. Violet managed to steal a pregnancy test to confirm what she told me. She is also the one who has been stealing food for us. I truly was useless as Evan claimed. “I told you Maddy, it is beneficial for both of us to leave this place.” She never offered any information about herself and I didn’t press her for more information. I was an exiled wolf, pregnant with the CEO Alpha’s child. I was running for my life and my baby’s life and we are still in my ex-husband’s territory. A loud bang made me flinch and huddle into my jacket. I made myself as small as possible. Violet shot an annoyed look in my direction and rolled her eyes. “I told you; no one is going to hurt you. We have been lucky this far.” I put my hands over my stomach and sighed. “Violet, eventually luck runs out. We are going to end up dead.” A shadow fell over us and I whimpered in fear. “Are you the two I’m supposed to drive to Missouri?” My head shot up and I was staring at a gruff-looking man who reeked of tobacco. “Yes, here as promised.” I watched as Violet handed him a stack of money and I gasped. “Where did you get that Violet?” “I have my ways.” I noticed something else among the pile of cash she had in her bag. It was my birth mother’s necklace. “Please don’t tell me you robbed the Alpha of the Smokey Mountain pack?” I was gripping her arm so hard she winced in pain. The man watched our exchange with indifference and she pushed me towards his truck. “Not the Alpha, one of his many mistresses.” I laughed bitterly. “There is something I really need to tell you but first let’s get out of here.” She slammed the door and the man grunted as he got into the driver’s seat. My teeth started chattering and he reached down to turn the heat on causing me to flinch. “Ma’am I don’t know what hurt you went through. I’m not here to harm you. Sit back and relax please.” I eyed him. They always say they will never hurt you but they always do.
