FOUR YEARS AGO
I watched as two lines formed on the pregnancy stick. It should have filled me with joy instead I was filled with dread.
A knock on the door had me throwing the test away and wiping the tears away from my eyes.
“You look horrible darling why are you hiding in here? Everyone is looking for you.” The fake joy in Trinity Sinclair’s voice did nothing to ease my anxiety.
Her caramel-colored eyes raked over my figure and I fidgeted under her scrutiny.
“You are not wearing that to the garden party, are you?” I glanced down at the floral maxi dress I had on. It was much too tight.
“Is she wearing what to the party?” Rena Mercer poked her head in and sneered at my dress as I tried to smooth down the imaginary wrinkles.
“It was the only thing I had in my closet.” It was the only thing that fit since the last pregnancy failed and I wasn’t able to lose the baby weight.
The two women exchanged a look and started laughing.
“Why are you so fat? This is why Evan barely touches her. He can’t stand to see all that excess jiggling when he screws her.” My cheeks flamed red as the two women crowded me.
“I’m sorry not an anorexic slut like you two.” Their amusement soured and Rena grabbed me by the throat. Her wolf at the surface as she glared at me.
“What was that you said?” She squeezed and I felt her nails dig into my neck and blood trickle down my neck. Her eyes flickered to the garbage can and I saw her smirk.
“Trinity darling is that what I think it is in the trash?” I was trying to shake my head and plead with her the other woman grabbed some paper towels and was fishing the test out of the trash.
“Oh it is, looks like we have something to celebrate. Shall we show the dowager?” Fear gripped me as Rena dragged me from the bathroom by my throat.
The dowager was Evan’s mother and even more frightening than the other she-wolves at this party. I nearly stumbled down the stairs but was held upright by Rena.
Trinity sauntered ahead and bent down to whisper something to the woman seated at the front of the room. Her dark eyes flickered from Rena to me.
“Bring her here Rena.” Rena was smiling with glee as she pushed me down to kneel in front of the older woman.
The dowager’s cane slammed on the marble floor in front of my face causing me to flinch again.
“Who is the father of the child?” Her voice echoed through the grand ballroom and all talking ceased.
All eyes were on me as I knelt on the ground shuddering with fear.
“It is my Alpha’s child.” I could barely get the words out.
The room exploded into laughter and indignant comments. How dare the fat little troll of the Alpha lie!
“ENOUGH!” The woman stood up and I scurried back from her.
“Tell her the truth you stupid half-breed.” Rena yanked on my hair and I yelped in pain. The women around me turned away and started talking among themselves.
“I am telling the truth. It is his child.” The dowager narrowed her eyes even further and then limped back to her chair.
“Lock her up. Maybe she will tell the truth after a few days in the cell.”
“No! No! I’m telling the truth!” Pain exploded across my face as Rena slapped me.
I tasted blood and I heard the doors open behind me. I could feel hope bloom in my chest as the heavy tread of Evan entered the room.
All the women but the dowager fell to their knees and bent their necks.
“What is going on here?” Just maybe there was a shred of kindness in my husband.
I looked up at him and he was staring at his mother.
“She is pregnant. I asked her who the father was and she said it was you.” I saw his jaw tense as he continued to stare at his mother.
“I would like to know why you assume it would be some other man’s child?” I saw Rena scurry forward and thrust herself at Evan.
“It is a well-known fact my Alpha that you are not sharing a bed with her.” Shame stained my cheeks.
“Is it now? Is that all you ladies have to do all day? Gossip about who I am sleeping with?” I could feel the danger coming off him.
“We were just speculating my Alpha it isn’t like we meant any harm.” Rena giggled nervously and I saw Evan turn his attention to her.
“Just because I have not invited you to my bed yet doesn’t give you the right to talk about whom I fuck.” He reached down and grabbed my arm.
I slid and nearly fell again but he steadied me. It was the first time he had ever shown me any type of kindness.
“Don’t tell me that you have developed feelings for this ogre.” Rena spat the words at me.
Evan backhanded her and she fell to the floor holding her cheek as she glared at him in disbelief.
“Do not presume to tell me what I feel. Also, never lay hands on my property ever again.” He yanked my arm and we left the ballroom.
“If you cannot carry this baby to term, I will kill you.” He threw me into the back seat of his car and slid in after me.
How could I be so delusional to think he cared?
