Chapter 1 A new home
Angelica “We’ve arrived,” the gruff voice of Alpha Vincent’s Beta brought me back to reality. I dozed off again without thinking. I looked outside the window to find myself in front of the beds of roses, which led to a path. He got out first, then opened the door for me. I stepped out and stood next to him, carefully observing my surroundings. “Let’s go inside first, I’ll tell someone to pick up your luggage,” he suggested. I nodded and followed in his footsteps as he led me the way. We walked down the beds of red and white roses mixed together on both sides of the path. Then, after a one-minute walk, we finally arrived in front of the big castle-like packhouse of Sapphire Moon pack. No matter how many times I come here, it still feels so big. “Follow me or you might get lost,” he mentioned, glancing over in my direction. Is he being kind or cautious? I'm not a little girl anymore who would get lost. When he walked inside through the main door, a group of servants standing at both sides gave a short bow with respect. He brought me inside, and we stood under the big chandelier in the living room. The walls were painted dark mahogany. And the floor was marbled white with intricate patterns. The whole interior had the touch of Victorian era castles. I saw a few maids walking past us, busy among themselves. The Beta turned to me and exclaimed, “The Alpha must be in his room. I’ll go and call him. You can sit here and wait for him to come.” “Okay.” After he left, I took a seat on a corner of the couch, which was feather-soft. I surely feel like an oddball out here. Our old apartment was way more comfortable than this. I wouldn’t have had to leave, unless Uncle had left. Why did you have to leave me Uncle? My thoughts came to a halt when I heard footsteps heading my way. I looked towards the direction of the stairs. Alpha Vincent came downstairs with his Luna by his side and his Beta, who followed behind them. Seeing them, I promptly got up on my feet. Alpha came over to my side, and stood in front of me. The gray streaks on his short, trimmed brown hair and wrinkled forehead made him look a bit older than Uncle who looked quite young for his age. But he was surely in shape, just like the time when I first saw him. “I assume you are Angelica Fischer?” he asked in a warm tone. “Uh, yes. I’m Angelica. Thank you for taking me in,” I greeted with a bow. “Take a seat, we can talk afterwards,” he replied. “You too, honey.” They sat across me while the Beta stood behind them. The whole room fell silent suddenly, and the atmosphere became tense, making it hard for me to breathe. What am I supposed to talk about with them? God, I feel so anxious. “Angelica, how old are you now?” the Alpha asked, breaking the silence. “Um, 17.” “Same age as our sons, I see,” he replied, lowering his head. “Do you know the reason why we called you here?” I shook my head in dismissal. “No.” You only sent out a letter telling me to come here with no detailed instructions except for my luggage. “My brother’s final wish on his deathbed was for us to take care of you and give you a home to call your own. I guess you know that?” I nodded, staring down at my hands, the memory of that day flashing in the back of my mind just like yesterday. “Yes, I was there when he said that.” “He raised you like his own child, even though you have no ties with our pack. That’s why, to honor his wishes, we want to give you a home.” I slowly raised my head, hearing his statements. Am I hearing it right? “Welcome to the Sapphire Moon pack, Angelica.” He addressed with a soft smile. At that moment, I could see a reflection of Uncle in him. “Uh….I’m grateful for your kindness,” I stuttered in my reply. “I really didn’t know where to go without a guardian. Everything was so confusing and tough, I had no one to call my own and–“ “It’s okay, I understand your state of mind. He was so close to you after all,” He interrupted, narrowing his eyes on me. “It’s not easy to accept someone’s death. But, we gotta live with it and move on. From now on, you can rely on us and think of this as your own home. Alright?” I nodded in agreement. “Thank you for your kindness. I’ll try to make myself useful around the house.” “You are a student, focus on your studies and think about your future,” the Alpha asserted forcefully. “We have plenty of maids for the chores. You don’t have to bother yourself with that.” “Uh, um….” “And I already got you admitted to the school. Get your uniform from the tailors by the evening, and you can attend from tomorrow onwards.” School? “Which school?” “Riverdale High is the pride of Sapphire Moon pack. My brothers and I all attended that high school,” Alpha elaborated, seeming a bit nostalgic. “And now, our children are attending that school as well, alongside Karl’s children. Ray is such a sweet child.” “You pamper him too much,” his beta remarks with a bit of annoyance. “He’s becoming spoiled.” “You speak rubbish. He’s nothing of that sort,” Alpha retorted. The Alpha and the Beta, have so much bonding. They look just like old acquaintances. “Anyway, Angelica, welcome aboard. If there’s anything you want to know, you can ask Karl. He’ll tell you everything,” Alpha asserted. “Uh, thank you.” “You are forgetting something,” the Luna remarks, glancing at the Alpha. “Forgetting?” his brows curled in confusion. “Yes, we talked about it in the morning, remember?” “Oh, you mean that. Yeah, I remember it now.” he turned to me the very minute with a serious look. “Well, you know about my sons, right?” I gave a nod hesitantly. How could I forget about them? Whenever I used to come here with Uncle to stay for a few days, they would taunt me and bully me however they liked. And I couldn’t tell either their father or Uncle about it. That was a nightmare for me that I can’t seem to forget about, even today. “They are a bit of a handful, but I hope you can get accustomed to them with time,” Alpha explained, “As they are going to be your classmates, and you have to live here with them as well.” “Uh…hm….I’ll try my best.” I could only nod, forcing a smile. Cause I knew better than anyone how much trouble they are. I have a bad feeling about the idea of living here suddenly. Will I be alright, Uncle?
