Chapter 3:The shadow of the nightshade

The night air grew thick with tension as the three massive black wolves stepped entirely into the shallow stream, water splashing quietly around their heavy paws. The lead wolf stood towering over the rest, its fur dark as midnight and its chest broad enough to crush a man with a single blow. Its eyes held an amber glow that cut through the darkness, sharp and calculating. There was no chaotic bloodlust in those eyes—only cold, disciplined authority. This was the infamous Nightshade Pack. Stories about them had circulated through the Bloodmoon territory for as long as I could remember. They were known across the region as ruthless, fiercely territorial, and unyielding. Nobody crossed their borders uninvited and lived to tell the tale. Yet, as the massive wolf took another step closer, I didn't back down. The cold, ancient power pulsing beneath my skin kept my knees from shaking. "You are trespassing on Nightshade land, stranger," a deep, command-filled voice echoed in my head. Mind-link. The lead wolf was speaking to me directly through the shared telepathic channel high-ranking wolves could project to outsiders. I took a slow breath, keeping my arms visible at my sides. "I mean no harm. I was... relocated to the border by the Bloodmoon Pack." The lead wolf narrowed its eyes. A low, rumbling growl vibrated through its chest. "Relocated? You carry the scent of Bloodmoon, yet you wander near our river alone at midnight. Speak clearly, or we will treat you as a spy." "I am no spy," I replied, my voice echoing with a calm firm belief that surprised even me. "I was rejected by Alpha Lucian at the Mate Ceremony tonight. His Enforcers banished me to the northern outpost. I crossed the stream only to find fresh water." At the mention of Lucian's name and the rejection, the lead wolf stopped. The two smaller wolves behind him shifted nervously, sniffing the air. Wolves had an incredible sense of smell—they could catch the lingering scent of a broken mate bond, the subtle metallic odor of grief and severed magic, if they paid close attention. The lead wolf leaned in closer, his snout just feet from mine. He inhaled slowly. For a second, I thought he would strike. But then, the wolf raised its head toward the sky, and a brilliant flash of black-and-silver light enveloped its form. In a matter of seconds, the massive beast shifted into human form. Standing before me was a man whose presence completely commanded the forest. He was remarkably tall, with sharp, sculpted features, dark hair swept back from his forehead, and those same piercing amber eyes. He wore a heavy leather coat over a dark shirt, radiating an aura so dominant it made the ambient wind drop to a whisper. Alpha Kaelen. My heart skipped a beat. This wasn't just a patrol leader. This was the Alpha of the Nightshade Pack himself—the man the entire region whispered about in fear. Kaelen folded his arms across his chest, observing me with an unreadable expression. "An Omega rejected by Lucian," he said softly, his deep voice carrying a natural weight. "Curious. Lucian just announced his political union with the Sunridge daughter tonight. The news reached our scouts an hour ago." "Then you know I am telling the truth," I said, meeting his intense gaze without flinching. "Truth, perhaps," Kaelen acknowledged, stepping closer. "But something doesn't add up." He stopped less than two paces away. His gaze dropped to the collar of my tunic, right where the hidden silver seal rested against my skin. Even though the mark was concealed beneath my clothes, the air around us was noticeably cooler, glowing with faint traces of silver mist that flickered in the moonlight. "A broken Omega does not radiate magic like this," Kaelen said softly, his amber eyes narrowing. "A broken Omega does not stand before the Alpha of Nightshade with her head held high. Who are you really?" "My name is Aria," I answered. "And until tonight, I thought I was just an Omega. But whatever happened when the bond snapped... it woke something else inside me." Kaelen remained quiet for a long moment, studying my face as if searching for any sign of deception. The two guards behind him shifted into their human forms as well, standing guard with watchful eyes, waiting for their Alpha's command. Finally, Kaelen reached out a hand. He didn't touch me, but he hovered his palm an inch above my chest, right where the crescent mark throbbed. A sudden wave of warmth passed between us—not the painful burn of the rejected bond, nor the icy chill of my awakened magic, but a strange, steady resonance. The silver mist around my fingers flickered gently in response to his presence. Kaelen’s eyes flared with genuine surprise. "The Moon Guardian's crest," he murmured under his breath, almost too quiet for the others to hear. "You know what this is?" I asked quickly, a surge of hope rising in my chest. Kaelen drew his hand back, his face hardening into a solemn mask once more, though his eyes burned with a newfound intensity. "I know the legends," Kaelen said. "Ancient magic thought to have perished a century ago. A power that the Bloodmoon Pack was clearly too blind to recognize." He turned slightly, looking back toward his territory across the river before looking back at me. "Lucian discarded you because he thought you were weak, Aria. He traded a living legend for a simple political alliance." A faint, cold smile touched the corner of Kaelen's lips. "His mistake is about to become his greatest regret." "What are you saying?" I asked. "I am saying that you will not survive out here alone at the border," Kaelen said, extending his hand toward me once again—this time, open in an invitation. "Come with us to the Nightshade citadel. I will give you shelter, safety, and a place to learn what that power inside you truly is." I looked down at his open palm, then back up into his steady amber eyes. Returning to the Bloodmoon Pack meant living as an outcast or facing execution. Staying in the woods meant hunting alone while my power continued to grow uncontrollably. Nightshade offered a path forward—and perhaps, the key to uncovering my true destiny. I took a breath, reached out, and placed my hand in his.
