That would never happen.
“Explaining anything to her was never part of the deal. I haven’t talked to the girl in a while. Why would I now? Let her get her stuff and get the hell out of my house. The deal is done. You got what you wanted.”
What!? I was leaving with him. Taking my stuff? What had my father done? Finally, whatever spell that had a hold of my throat was released, and my voice rang out strongly.
“You bastard, what have you done? I’m not going anywhere. You had no right to make any type of deal concerning me.”
My body had to begin to shake with the rage that was slowing through my veins. Jackson laughed
“You were right, Daniel, she does have a little fire in her. You will tell her the deal you made, or I will take the money and her. You will be left with nothing.”
This was not a threat, it was a promise. My father sat down heavily in the old, faded chair we had carried around from town to town with us. He stared out the window never at me, but at least he started to explain.
“About three towns ago, this feller approached me at the local drinking hole. He had been watching you, I guess. He decided he wanted you and, from the looks of him, I would say he gets what he wants. He was going to get you one way or the other. Why shouldn’t I profit from it? You’ve taken enough from me all these years’ time to pay it back, girl.”
