Chapter 2

1325 Words
Lacy, Daryl and I traveled around for awhile, looking for a peaceful place that we could settle down and not have to worry about packs, mates or any sort of drama. Everything that happened with Connor and Sarah was still too fresh in my memory and at the moment I could not even fathom that I may have a second chance mate out there or even think about being with someone else. I just wanted to focus on starting my life over by finding a place to live and getting a job. I told Daryl and Lacy that they didn’t have to lead the life I was going to live and if they wanted to go out in search of another pack they could, while Nova still craved living in a pack she was not fighting me on doing what I needed to but I could still feel her sadness. We finally came upon a small town in Colorado near the mountains, it was quaint and I loved all the small shops that lined the streets. There was a cute restaurant that we went to eat at and I noticed the Help Wanted sign that was in the window. We went in and sat down at a table, and a middle aged waitress came over to get our drink orders. We ordered water and coffees all the way around, when she returned with our drinks I finally asked, “I noticed the help wanted sign on the way in, what kind of help are you looking for?” The waitress smiled at us, “We are looking for a couple of waitresses because some of our help left for school.” I looked over at Lacy and she nodded because we both have had experience waiting tables when we were teenagers. The only reason I stopped was when I turned 18 Connor and I realized we were mates and I had to take on my beta female responsibilities. Connor didn’t want me to continue waitressing and kept pushing for me to quit even though I liked the extra cash it gave me and to this day I regretted giving into his request. The waitress, Helen, was a sweetheart and brought us applications to fill out, she asked us if we had flexible availability because we may need to work afternoons, evenings and even weekends. Lacy and I chatted with her for a bit then she left us to put in our food orders and we filled out the applications. Daryl was a bit more social and said he may look at the local bars to see if they might need any bartenders or even a bouncer. I think that would be a great job for him, I just hope he doesn’t miss warrior training too much. We gave Helen our applications when she came with our orders, she gave us the name of someone that she knew that had rental properties and may have something that we could rent. We all agreed that we had a good feeling about this place and we wanted to stick around. The best part was this was over 15 hours away from the White Moon pack, there was no way we would bump into anyone from our old pack. When we were done eating we went up to pay and Helen looked at Lacy and I and asked when we could start. She must have seen our confusion, “The owner trusts my judgment on hiring and I can tell you both have a good personality and I have seen your experience on your applications. I have a good feeling about both of you and I want to give you both a shot.” We told her we can start as soon as possible so she asked us to come in to fill out our paperwork and she would give us a tour of what we will need to know tomorrow. We thanked her for everything and while Lacy and I got in touch with Helen's friend in regards to a place to stay, Daryl went out in search of a job. We had enough money between all of us to start off, and I noticed the envelope Billy stashed in my bag with some cash and a note telling me that this was his way to help me get a fresh start. He wished me luck and asked me to reach out if we needed anything. Lacy and I were on our way to look at a couple of places, there was a 2 bedroom apartment and a 3 bedroom house that were both within our budget we came up with. While we were on our way to look at the rentals I sent Billy a text letting him know we found a place we decided to settle at. He called me right away after I sent the message and we talked for a while and he told me that he has Connor under review for the beta position. Having a position such as beta means you need to be able to set an example for the rest of the pack and what both he and Sarah did was the exact opposite. We told him where we were settling and promised to send our address for him and Ellie as soon as we signed a lease somewhere. We did ask him to keep it safe because we didn’t want Connor to know where we ended up. He agreed that any information that we gave him would be kept confidential and also said that they would come to visit us once we had gotten settled and more comfortable with our surroundings. He did ask why I chose to live in a human town instead of looking for another pack. “Billy, I am not saying that I would never live in a pack, but right now this is what I need to have a fresh start. Maybe someday I will seek out to join a pack but I can’t do that at this time. I just want to live a simple basic life right now.” Billy understood and told me that if I ever found a pack I wanted to join to not hesitate to have that Alpha contact him for a reference. Lacy and I looked at both the apartment and the house, while both had their perks and charm, we decided to go with the house. It would give us privacy and it was towards the edge of town in case we decided to ever shift and go for a run. We filled out the appropriate forms and since the landlord knew our employer she went ahead and gave us the keys after we paid the first month's rent and security deposit. It seemed like everything was going great for us and we met up with Daryl once we were done so we could go and start shopping for groceries. Daryl told us he had a good feeling regarding the bar he had applied for a job. He said he had an informal interview with the manager, but said the owner would have to still meet him. We shopped for what we needed at the local market and then moved our stuff into the house. The house was furnished with the basic appliances and some furniture. The only thing we needed to purchase bedroom furniture, we decided to meet up after Lacy and I finished our first day of work and check out a local furniture store. Daryl slept on the couch while Lacy and I shared an air mattress for the night. Before I fell asleep I texted my mom and said we found a place to stay and I would be in touch sometime tomorrow to explain everything that was going on. I then turned on the alarm on my phone and fell asleep anxious to start my first day of my new life.
