Chapter one
Lexi Thompson pushed open the heavy glass doors of Coastal High School, the warm Miami sun giving way to the air-conditioned hallway. She wore a flowy yellow sundress with white sneakers, her long, dark hair tied back in a messy bun.
As she walked through the crowded hallway, the sounds of chatter and locker doors created a familiar hum. Lexi's eyes scanned the room, searching for a glimpse of Jake, the robotics whiz she'd heard so much about.
She spotted him in his usual corner, surrounded by wires and circuit boards. His focus was intense, his eyes fixed on the small robot in front of him.
Lexi felt a flutter in her chest as she approached her locker, trying to appear nonchalant. She exchanged a smile with her best friend, Rachel, who was waiting by their lockers.
"Hey, girl! How was your summer?" Rachel asked, eyeing Lexi's outfit. "You look adorable today!"
Lexi blushed, feeling a sense of normalcy she craved. "Thanks, Rach. It was good. Just relaxed at home."
As they chatted, Lexi couldn't help sneaking glances at Jake, who remained oblivious to her presence.
Lexi opened her locker, the metal door creaking as she revealed a neatly organized interior. She pulled out a worn copy of "Economics: Principles and Practices" and tucked it into her backpack.
"Rach, have you seen Jake working on his robot?" Lexi asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Rachel raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Yeah, he's been obsessed with that thing. What's up?"
Lexi leaned in, her eyes drifting toward Jake's corner. "I don't get why he's so focused. Is he really that passionate about robotics?"
Rachel shrugged. "I think it's more than that. His mom's been struggling to make ends meet since his dad passed away. Jake wants to win that scholarship to secure his future."
Lexi's gaze lingered on Jake, her expression softening. "That's really sad. I had no idea."
Rachel nudged her playfully. "You're interested in him, aren't you?"
Lexi's cheeks flushed, and she quickly looked away. "No, I just feel bad for him, that's all."
Rachel's knowing smile suggested she wasn't buying Lexi's denial.
Rachel teased, "Come on, Lexi, admit it. You've got a crush on Jake!"
Lexi rolled her eyes, laughing. "Shut up, Rach!"
Just as Rachel was about to retaliate, the school bell rang, signaling the start of class.
"Saved by the bell," Lexi joked, shouldering her backpack.
Rachel grinned mischievously. "This isn't over, Lexi. I'll get the truth out of you."
As they parted ways to head to their respective classes, Lexi caught one last glimpse of Jake, still engrossed in his robotics project.
Their economics class shared a room with the robotics club, and Lexi's seat happened to be right next to Jake's workstation.
She felt a flutter in her chest as she sat down, trying to focus on the lesson.
Jake, however, remained oblivious to her presence.
Mrs. Patel, their economics teacher, began the lecture, and Lexi tried to take notes, but her gaze kept drifting toward Jake's focused expression.
Lexi couldn't help but sneak glances at Jake, her eyes drawn to his intense focus. She admired the way his hair curled slightly at the nape of his neck, and the way his eyes crinkled at the corners as he concentrated.
Just as she was taking in the sight of him, Jake looked up, his gaze meeting Lexi's. She quickly averted her eyes, feeling a flush rise to her cheeks.
Mrs. Patel, their economics teacher, stood at the front of the room, droning on about supply and demand. Lexi tried to focus, but her mind kept wandering back to Jake.
"Jake, can you explain the concept of opportunity cost?" Mrs. Patel asked, turning to Jake.
Jake launched into a clear and concise explanation, and Lexi found herself impressed.
But when Mrs. Patel turned to her and asked, "Lexi, can you give an example of opportunity cost in real-life scenarios?" Lexi froze.
She hadn't been paying attention, too caught up in staring at Jake. She mumbled something incoherent, feeling her face heat up with embarrassment.
Jake glanced over at her, a hint of surprise in his eyes.
The class ended, and Lexi breathed a sigh of relief. She quickly gathered her belongings, eager to escape the awkwardness.
As she stood up, Jake caught her eye, his expression unreadable. Lexi felt a flutter in her chest, wondering if he was going to say something to her.
But instead, he simply nodded and turned back to his robotics project, dismissing her.
Lexi felt a pang of disappointment, unsure why she was expecting anything more.
Rachel, who had been observing the exchange, caught up to Lexi in the hallway. "Well, that was interesting. What's going on between you two?"
Lexi shrugged, trying to brush it off. "Nothing. I just spaced out in class, and he noticed."
Rachel raised an eyebrow. "You were staring at him pretty intensely. Maybe he's starting to notice you."
Lexi's cheeks flushed, and she quickened her pace. "Let's just drop it, okay."
Lexi quickly parted ways with Rachel, citing a need to grab a book from her locker before lunch. Rachel looked skeptical but didn't press the issue.
As Lexi walked away, she felt a mix of emotions swirling inside her. She couldn't shake off the feeling that Jake had seen right through her, that he knew she'd been staring at him.
She reached her locker and pretended to search for a book, using the moment alone to collect her thoughts.
Why was she so invested in Jake's opinion, anyway? She barely knew him.
Just as she was closing her locker, Lexi heard the sound of footsteps approaching. She turned, expecting Rachel, but instead found herself face-to-face with Jake.
"Jake," she said, surprised.
He stood before her, his robotics project tucked under his arm, his eyes fixed on hers.
"Hey," he replied, his voice low and smooth.
Lexi's heart skipped a beat. What did he want?
Jake cleared his throat, his eyes never leaving Lexi's face. "I wanted to ask you something."
Lexi's heart raced as she waited for him to continue.
"Why were you staring at me in class?" Jake asked, his tone neutral.
Lexi felt her cheeks flush, unsure how to respond. She hadn't expected him to confront her about it.
"I...I was just spacing out," she stammered, trying to downplay it.
Jake raised an eyebrow, his expression skeptical. "You were staring at me for a pretty long time."
Lexi shrugged, feeling embarrassed. "I don't know, okay? Maybe I was just admiring your...robotics skills."
Jake's gaze lingered on hers, as if searching for something more. His face inches from hers, his warm breath sending shivers down Lexi's spine. His flirtatious smile made her heart skip a beat.
"You do know I'm a playboy, don't you?" he whispered, his voice low and husky.
Lexi's eyes locked onto his, her pulse racing. She felt trapped, unable to move or respond.
"Don't fall in love with me," Jake continued, his words sending a thrill through her. "You don't want to get your heart broken."
Lexi's cheeks flushed as she processed his words. Was he warning her away or flirting?
She tried to speak, but her voice caught in her throat. Jake's proximity made her brain foggy.
Just as suddenly as he'd leaned in, Jake pulled back, his smile still plastered on his face.
"Just thought I'd warn you," he said, winking.
Lexi's heart sank, unsure what to make of Jake's words. Was he genuinely concerned or just playing games?
As Jake walked away, Lexi felt a mix of emotions swirling inside her. Before she could process her thoughts, a voice dripped with venom cut through the air.
"Wow, you think you can land someone like Jake?" Lisa sneered, her perfectly manicured eyebrows raised.
Lisa, the school's queen bee, stood tall at around 5'9" with a lean, athletic build. Her long, blonde hair cascaded down her back like a golden waterfall, and her piercing blue eyes sparkled with malice.
Her designer clothes hugged her curves in all the right places, showcasing her toned physique. A gleaming silver necklace with a sparkling diamond pendant adorned her neck, radiating an aura of wealth and privilege.
Lisa's gaze swept over Lexi, her expression disdainful. "Please, you're not even in his league. Jake's way out of your reach."
Lexi felt a sting from Lisa's words, but she refused to back down.
Lexi stood her ground, meeting Lisa's condescending gaze. "I wasn't trying to land him, Lisa. He just talked to me."
Lisa snorted, rolling her eyes. "Save it, Lexi. I know exactly what you're after. You think you can steal Jake from me?"
Lexi bristled at the accusation. "I'm not interested in stealing anyone, Lisa. Especially not someone who's already taken."
Lisa's smile faltered for a moment before she regained her composure. "You're just jealous of what I have. Jake and I have a connection, and you'll never understand it."
Lexi raised an eyebrow. "Connection? You mean the kind where he flirtatiously warns people away from him?"
Lisa's eyes narrowed. "You don't know what you're talking about."
Just then, the school's principal, Mr. Johnson, appeared, clearing his throat. "Ladies, let's keep the discussion civil."
Lisa flashed a saccharine smile. "Of course, Principal Johnson. We were just discussing... school spirit."
Mr. Johnson nodded, though his expression remained skeptical.
As Lisa flounced off,Lexi felt a shiver run down her spine. She had just made an enemy.
Lexi slammed her locker shut, the metal door reverberating with a loud clang. Frustration boiled over, and she let out a deep breath.
Why did Lisa always get under her skin?
As she turned to walk away, Lexi caught a glimpse of Jake watching her from across the hallway. Their eyes met for a fleeting moment before he disappeared into the crowd.
Lexi's heart skipped a beat. What was he thinking?
Shaking off the distraction, Lexi reminded herself that she had a test to prepare for. She couldn't afford to let Lisa's drama derail her focus.
Let it be, she thought, pushing aside the lingering tension. She had more important things to worry about.
With renewed determination, Lexi headed to the library to study, the sound of her footsteps echoing down the emptying hallway.
