Worries and detective work.

Jax POV

" Hey Brother! good to see you in the flesh! I feel like it's been forever." Mark says with a huge smile on his face.

I won't lie it's good to see him. I've been surrounded by strangers a lot lately and it's nice to see a familiar face.

" it's good to see you too man. let's go get you something to eat." I say slapping him on the back. he walks back to his Jeep and hops into the driver's seat.

" where to?"

" I know a good Deli they make some amazing Subs."

" sounds good!"

Mark starts his Jeep and we pull away.

we pull into the deli parking lot that just so happens to be next to the cafe. as we walk out I take a peek next door and I can't spot Macy's car.

"Shit." I say a little louder than I intended.

" what's wrong?" Mark looks over at me with his brows furrowed.

" nothing I just.. it seems my mate is not at work right now. Max is itching to see her again but I don't know where she lives so.." I said looking in the direction of the cafe.

" she works there?" Mark asks pointing to the cafe.

" yeah.. so do I. but I don't know any of the staff yet. my first day is tomorrow night." I say feeling a little disappointed.

"Hmm.. what does she look like?" he asked with a look in his face like he's working something out.

" short, long black hair and curves in all the right places." I say as a smile starts to take hold just thinking about her.

" cool, stay here I'll be right back." he says with the look of sheer determination on his face. I chuckled and leaned my back against the Jeep waiting to see what Mark is up to.

he was gone for 15 minutes or so before I see him with two cups of coffee in hand and a look of Victory on his face. I smile looking at him and shaking my head.

"what did you do?" I asked

"fixed a problem. that's what I'm supposed to do as your beta right?"

I grab one of the cups of coffee from his hand and I look at him confused.

" And what problem is that?" I asked.

" turns out one of her good friends is working right now, Blake I think his name is. one of the employees told me that he goes to her place almost every night to hang out after work."

a growl rips from my throat before I can even think to suppress it.

Mark's eyebrows shoot up and he starts to laugh. " easy boy! word is they're just friends but hang out almost every day. so if you want to know where she lives we just need to follow him after work.

Max is now prancing around in my head like a newborn pup he's so excited to see Macy.

" wow good work beta!" I say genuinely impressed.

" let's get some food. we have some time to kill before the cafe closes." I say heading into the deli.

after we had something to eat at the deli we decided to sit in Mark's Jeep in the parking lot and wait for the cafe to close in 30 minutes or so. Max is pacing in my mind making me feel restless.

"You alright man?" Mark asks with a worried look on his face.

" Yeah Max is scratching at the surface. he wants to claim our mate.. but I cant help but be worried." I say leaning my head back on the head rest.

" About what?" he asks

" what if she doesn't like me? what if she freaks out when she finds out I'm a werewolf? what if it's all too much pressure for her and she runs? I have no idea how to deal with a human as a mate.. what should I do?

" first, calm down. we can figure this out, we have plenty of time to ease her into all of this." he says patting my shoulder.

" actually.. I have a month. turns out I have to move out of my place. and with dad cutting me off financially I don't think I can afford a place on my own."

" why don't you tell your dad that you found your mate and you need more time? I'm sure he would understand." Mark says.

" he's not going to be too thrilled about me having a human mate. he's a traditionalist he believes having a strong She Wolf as a mate is important for an alpha. this whole thing is getting more stressful by the minute." I say starting to get a headache from all this worrying.

ever since my mother died shortly after I was born, my father has been obsessed with finding a strong mate. one who can take the constant threats that Loom over Alphas and Lunas, always being under threats and challenges for territory and control of packs in general. while pack life is amazing and a strong sense of community, there are Bad actors everywhere. always looking for a weakness to exploit for personal gain.

" listen Jax, I know you're stressed out but we have some time. Let's cross that bridge when we come to it. right now let's focus on getting your mate to fall in love with you." Mark says wagging his eyebrows at me mischievously.

" Ha, your right I have to focus on the task at hand. I have a feeling I'm going to have my hands full with my badass mate.." I say with a smirk on my face.

After a few minutes I notice the lights inside the cafe turn off. I see 3 guys head to the door.

I smack Mark in the arm and point to the cafe. "Its show time" I say keeping my eyes glued to Blake as he walks to his car.

"Alright! lets do this!" Mark says looking a little too excited about this.

he starts the Jeep and waits as Blake pulls out of the cafe parking lot. he passes the deli parking lot and we slowly merge onto the road following at a safe distance.

the drive is not far from the cafe before he pulls off onto a dead end street. I see him park behind another car and step out. the car door to the car in front of Blake's swings open. I see the guy Tim from the cafe. Max starts to growl thinking about two men alone with our mate.

Mark gives me a side eye. "Maybe they are gay?" he says clearly trying to calm my agitated wolf. I roll my eyes at him.

two guys clamp their hands together in a handshake like fashion and pull each other in for a quick hug and back slap. the guys turned to head to the house across the street.

as the guys make it to the front lawn of the house I noticed they're not heading to the front door but are walking around the side of the house to the back.

"Stay here." I say to Mark as I slip out of the Jeep and creep around to the side of the house.

I peek around the corner and see two guys lifting a metal storm door that appears to lead to what I assume is the basement of the house.
