Jax POV after walking out of the back room and onto the cafe floor, Macy asked me to change the garbages, sweep the floors and take care of the dishes in the back room sink. and like a good pup I do as I'm told. I start to get the feeling that she's trying to avoid me. every time I'm in the same area as her she quickly leaves and busies herself elsewhere. Ben and Lee seem nice enough, we didn't talk much. they were busy with customers and stocking product. the night is slipping through my fingers and I feel like I have to do something. I was about to mindlink Mark when I hear Macy call my name and wave me over. My heart skips a beat and I head right for her. "What's up?" I ask, with a smile that says "I'll do anything you ask , My Qween." "I have to send Bill and Lee on their 30-minute break. Do you think you can handle running the floor with me?" She asks, with a snarky undertone as if she doubts my ability to keep up. " I think I can handle what ever you have in store for me." I snark back, with a smirk on my face. "Do you know how to make drinks?" She asks trying to look anywhere else but in my eyes. " I do actually. I use to work in a cafe back at my Pa... umm back home. I stammered. "Oh? and where is home?" she asked, now seeming a bit more intrigued. " A small town in Ohio." I reply, taking a few steps closer to her. "Nice. How long have you been in Jersey?" she asks, seeming more relaxed as she leans her back against the counter. I take a few steps closer now just less than an arms length away. "8 months" I reply, starting to analyze her features. Her full pouting lips calling to me to kiss them. Her hair looks so soft I had to reach out and touch it. I grab a small section of her hair that has made its way out of the clip that is holding it back and I tuck it behind her ear. She freezes and looks at my hand like I just did something crazy. I frantically think of something to say to excuse my behavior. "Umm.. is that your real hair color?" I ask, internally slapping my forehead. I'm such a fool! "yes?" she says with one eyebrow raised. "I like it." I state, with a small smile. " I'm so glad." she says, sarcastically as she takes a step away from me. I feel the vibe from her start to shift growing colder. "s**t! I f**ked up." I scold myself. A customer walks up to the counter Macy takes his order. She hands over a regular cup of black coffee to the customer and tells them to have a good night. After a few minutes of an awkward silence she turns back to me seeming not as hostile. " So what brought you to Jersey?" She asks. I try to think of the right answer without lying to her. "A girl." I blurt out, immediately regretting my answer once I see her roll her eyes. "mmm.. so you have a girlfriend then?" she asks, no longer looking in my direction. "No, it didn't work out." I state. "I'm sorry to hear that." She says becoming more disinterested. " It wasn't meant to be. Perhaps fate has different plans." I say as I take uncontrollable steps back into her personal space. She turns to meet my eyes with a look I couldn't quite read. The features on her face soften and she leans in close to me. I hold my breath trying to hold myself together. I want to grab her face and kiss her so bad. " Perhaps fate brought you to me." She whispers looking up at me through her long lashes. I freeze on the spot. Then suddenly her face turns cold and disinterested, when she says, "To teach you that you need more than a pretty face to earn anyone who has any real value." She steps away from me again with a victorious smirk on her face, seemingly happy to put me in my place. Max growls, " Game on mate!" in my head. understanding the clear challenge she has set for us. I lite chuckle leaves my lips before I could stop it. She whips her head in my direction. "Something funny?" she says looking at me annoyed. I take a step back into her personal space and bend down into her face as a direct challenge to her. " You think you know me, short stuff?" I say with a playful tone. " It's not my first time at the rodeo, playboy." she says, looking directly into my eyes, meeting my challenge head on. "Fine." I state, as I staind up strait again. " Hangout with me tomorrow" I say to her. Her face scrunches as if confused and surprised by my invitation. "What? Why?" " You think you have me pegged. You think you know who I am and what my intentions are. I'm telling you, you're wrong. My words will mean absolutely nothing to a person like you. So hang out with me tomorrow. Get to know me before you judge me.. Unless you're scared." I say still with a playful tone. She scoffs at me as if it's the most ridiculous thing she's ever heard. "You ever heard the phrase don't judge a book by its cover??" I say, tipping my head to the side with a smirk. she starts to chuckle and shake her head in disapproval as she turns away from me. I reach out to stop her, grabbing her arm. "Come on, short stuff. One day. No pressure, no expectations. Get to know me first before you pin me as a player." She closes her eyes and sighs.. "Fine..one day that's all I will give you." I shoot her a big smile. " Perfect." I state. "What do you want to do?" she says rolling her eyes. I take a second to think of what a girl like Macy would enjoy doing then it hits me. "How about we go shoot some pool. I know a cool billiard place we can go to." I say remembering she had a pool table in her place. She smirks for a second then looks at me with a neutral look. "Fine." She says "Fine." I reply "Let me see your phone." I say, holding my hand out to her. "Why?" she asks "I'm going to give you my number so you can text me with what time and where I can pick you up tomorrow." She looks at me thinking about what I just said the reaches into the pocket of her apron and hands over her phone already set to add contact. I type my number in and then type my name in as Jax<3 I saved the contact and turn off the screen before she can see how I entered my name. I hand her back her phone just as Ben and Lee make their way back onto the floor. "Hey guys" she greets them. then looks back at me. " Jax you can take a 10 minute break. When you get back its time to start closing this place." she states. I nod at her and smile as I head in her direction to walk passed her. I lean down to her ear before I pass and whisper. " I'll be right back, short stuff. Don't miss me too much." she smiles and rolls her eyes at me seeing that I'm teasing her. and I head out the door of the cafe. I notice Mark stand from his seat to meet me outside. Mark runs up behind me. "Did I just see what I think I saw?" he says wagging his eyebrows at me with a grin on his face. " Yes you did." I reply with a huge smile. " So, what's the plan?" " We have a date tomorrow. I left the ball in her court. She will text me with the time and where to pick her up. If control is what she needs to feel more secure, then I'll give it to her, till she realizes I'm not trying to play her." Mark nods in agreement. " She's one tough cookie who is not afraid to challenge me. but Max seems to love every second of it." She will not be an easy one to tame that's for sure. but there is no way I'm backing down. I know she feels the mate bond. It may not be obvious to her right now, but the more time we spend together the stronger the bond will get. I have to find a way to spend as much time as I can with her.
