CHAPTER FIVE
KAI HADEZ POV
I sat in a private room upstairs, smoking a cigar with my left hand and swirling a glass of bourbon in my hand. Lukas Sain sat beside me as we watched the people of Aqe City party hard below. The Sain family were big enough to rival the Hadez in a few years. Hence I had initially accepted Lukas into my close-knit circle of friends but then his personality had managed to grow on me. Lukas was the more friendly and easygoing version of me, and perhaps the media was right that I was self-absorbed because I chose a friend who was me in another version. When it came to business and matters of the heart we were the same person.
Ruthless.
Cunning
Dangerous
As people of our status, we had all the different types of girls flocking into our lives and trying to get a piece. The thought reminded me of my run-in earlier today with Naya Shane. I hadn’t expected to see her there much less ruin the party. It was brave of her and if it wasn’t my banquet hall she destroyed I would have admired her courage and braveness but realistically, it was mine and hence she was going to dearly pay for it. Once upon a time, she was the heartthrob of the city. Every single man fancied her. Until they found out she had a smart mouth and was disrespectful because of her Surname. A true and true sheltered elite. The Shanes were one of our business partners until they pulled out a few months ago. It seemed the was a change in management. I wonder if that was the cause of Naya’s fall from grace and the reason she had come to me. Anyway, she chose the wrong strategy to approach me for help. She was too prideful to beg and hence had resorted to blackmail.
I had come here to clear my mind but it seemed the thorn I was avoiding had chased me here.
It wasn't until the faint figure disappeared from sight that I withdrew my gaze and turned around, only to see Lukas looking at me strangely. He quirked a brow with certain expectations.
"Are you just going to watch the girl being taken away heartlessly? Don't you want to help? You know what will happen to a sweet little girl like her. Word is that she’s still a virgin" Lukas Sain picked up his wine glass and smiled evilly to himself. A sudden picture of her body covered in wet clothes that left barely anything to the imagination. I gulped down the rest of my drink and slammed the glass down. Lukas poured me some more. I looked below again but it didn’t look like anyone was going to follow them.
I was not surprised he had no kind words for her. She had once rejected him and hence he was still bitter. He and a lot of men here. I heard that story a while ago. Word on the street was that she was a self-absorbed pretty snob. She has currently fallen from grace and is fighting to get back her status. It won’t be with me, unfortunately for her.
"You seemed to be having a lot of foolish thoughts tonight. I’d leave you to it." I said, putting down the glass, I stood up from the bar stool, took out my phone and car keys from the bar counter, and put them in the pocket of my trousers.
"I'm going back first. Take your time with your drink. I'll put it on my tab." After half-turning, I casually draped my suit jacket over my arm and walked towards the door with broad steps.
"Hey, Hadez, don't leave. It's no fun drinking alone. Just think of what I said earlier as nonsense, Hadez, Hadez..." I ignored him.
...
Outside, a dense drizzle began at some point. It was not heavy, but it gave off a chill.
I put on the suit jacket draped over my arm and walked towards the parking lot in heavy steps.
I unlocked the smoke-coloured Bentley with the remote control, stooped and sat in the driver's seat. Just as I was about to fasten my seatbelt, I caught a glimpse of another car passing by and heard a soft, tender female voice coming from the rolled-down window.
My movement froze as i took out a cigar from the car. I didn’t want to look but her face was red and innocent and perfect for any man looking tonight.
With a flicker of fire, I lit the cigarette between my fingers, resting my arm casually on the steering wheel.
The wipers swung back and forth, making a squeaking sound. I enjoyed the little sounds for a few seconds then I turned on the high beams and could see the speeding car on the road through the sector-shaped area on the front windshield.
My eyes narrowed as I took another deep drag of the cigar, feeling it snaking its way into my lungs, before starting the engine. My foot pushes the accelerator all the way to the floor, chasing after the black car in the hazy rain.
I flashed the headlights continuously, switching between low and high beams, and honked the horn insistently. Finally, the driver noticed and slowly rolled down the window. I could tell he meant to tell me to buzz off but once his eyes met mine, he lowered them as his body stiffened. Good. He knew better.
In Aqe City, the name Kai Hadez was more than just a name.
I held the economic lifeline of this city. If you were relevant enough you’d know the Kai Hadez. Luckily for him he did. Going against me was equivalent to going against money.
"At the next intersection, drop her off." I ordered him.
The man in ash clothes regained his voice after being frightened for a while, "Okay... Okay, Mr. Hadez." He didn’t dare to question me.
My word is law after all.
