CHAPTER ONE Funerals and Weddings “I just signed my death contract and he’s the one going to kill me.” That’s what kept ringing in my mind as I pressed the fire alarm and all the prominent people of Aqe City began to run like animals caught in a wildfire. But the irony was that there was no fire and these people were far from animals. It was honestly ironic. Designer gowns and exclusive pieces of timeless tuxes, jewelry and watches get drenched with water. Sprinklers turn open and water rains down, drenching every beautiful chandelier and influential person at the birthday ball. Everyone who was present was a respected noble person with class and unmeasured wealth. These people were ministers and children of old money, wealth, modern royalty and the aristocrats of aristocrats. They were at their princess’s birthday party. Beth was the beloved princess that everyone adored. She wore a beautiful custom-made designer gown with pieces of rare diamonds crystals that would set the average person and his two generations for life. But she wore such a dress for just a birthday party. She did like to show off, after all, she was a Hadez. The Hadez family was law and god here. They reigned in this heaven. They had both money and power equally high. And I just royally executed myself by ruining the ball of the year because Kai Hadez, the only heir to the Hadez empire, and the most dangerous man in the city was right there in the middle of all the chaos around him. He was watching me. No- he wasn’t watching me. He was piercing me with his dark dark smoky dangerous eyes. I knew all about him. He was the king of my chessboard after all. I spent so much time researching him. He was the key to my game plan. All this chaos was just to get him to look at me. Or well to be more honest, I was trying to get him to marry me. Not because I loved him — no, but because he was beneficial to me. The Shane name was going downhill and my inheritance was being threatened. It was my duty to fight for it even if it meant marrying someone as vile as Kai Hadez or stooping so low to blackmail him. Kai Hadez had a strong and commanding presence. I could feel it increasing as his gaze stayed on mine Even his overwhelming height threatened to make me cower in his presence. His piercing eyes, a captivating shade of pitch darkness, seem to hold a world of secrets. His perfectly styled dark hair adds to his allure, and his chiselled jawline gives him a rugged yet sophisticated look. Kai was untouchable. I have to get killed to get him on my chessboard because only my death would make someone as high as Kai is on our world of pyramids even give me a glance. “Your hands are still on the red button. You wanted me to catch you.” His cold dark voice said to me without question. I don’t even hear him. My heart was thumping loudly in my ears and the water which was cascading down now and drenching my white gown, couldn’t even calm me down. He was dressed in black neatly pressed trousers and a white shirt that was now soaked with water, exposing his lean muscular frames and abs. I hated to admit it but he was unfairly good-looking and extremely hot. He catches my wide eyes staring at his godly features but doesn’t even blink or tease me like other men might. He just doesn’t care about anyone that much. He continues walking towards me and maybe it’s the fear consuming me but I’m not able to move or talk. Say something! I chastise myself. I scream at myself but nothing comes out. I’ve been trying to talk to him for months to no avail. Since everything came crashing down for the Shane family I have resorted to our only hope but he wouldn’t even give me a second of his time. He steered clear off me like a plague. Either news reached him already about my family scandal or I was just not worth his time. Probably the latter though. A bigger stronger hand wraps around my wrist, and yank them from the fire alarm. “Ah!” I gasp in shock at his sheer strength— — and the fact that he was touching me !!!! “Naya Shane, tell me why I shouldn’t snap your wrist this minute for your atrocity.” He demanded in a calm voice. I don’t mistake calmness for anything other than the calm before the storm. Standing right in front of me, impossibly like this, I could see how tall he really was. He completely towered over my smallish frame and I wasn’t even a short girl. I was 5’7 for crying out loud. I’m not going to even mention his broad Frame that had completely obstructed whatever was behind him from my view. I can only look at him. He knows my name. This man… “You know me ?” I ask, my voice is barely a whisper. “I know every pawn in this city. Don’t get flattered” he said matter of factly. So I was just a mere pawn on his chessboard. Honestly, I’m not even offended. It’s an honor to be on his board no matter the role. I was not going to show him that though. “I needed your attention. I’ve been trying to get your attention for days and days on end but you can’t give me an ear. This was the only method I could resort to. Kindly forgive me” I say honestly. What was the use of lying to someone like him? I would just worsen my situation as nothing gets past him. “By ruining Beth’s birthday party? Why should the Hadez forgive you because of a stupid reason like this? You must be suicidal.” He asked as if I just said the most stupid reason. I ignore the subliminal insult to my intelligence. “Well it worked anyway since I was able to finally get your attention.I’ll get straight to the point then. I was the one who brought Beth home. So maybe I’m not the suicidal one here.” I could tell I had hit a nerve with my harsh words. His eyes twitched. It was for a quick second. I had almost missed it before his features were schooled back into his poker face he usually wore like a mask. We both knew the meaning behind my words. Imagine my shock when I saw Beth Hadez walking into the sea two nights ago and just standing there like a ghost. She wasn’t going to come out even when huge waves crashed at her. That girl was not okay and Kai was hiding it. This confirms my assumptions. I risked everything including my life for my theory. For some reason, he was the only one who knew what was wrong with Beth. Why would the adopted daughter of the Hadez family and the great Kai’s sister want to kill herself? “You’re either a foolish girl or underestimating me. However, you’re in luck today. How much to keep your mouth shut? I don’t want to spill your blood on her birthday. She hates the colour red.” “I don’t want money. What will Naya Shane use your money for? I have more than enough.” He let go of my wrist and took a step back. “Well, you’ve been hounding me for the past days like a stalker so you must want something else. Tell me then. There’s only a handful of things I’m unable to grant anyone. He had a god-complex. I’m tempted to roll my eyes but I refrain. I might not see the sun again if I dare. There could be only one answer and I had it in abundance. A very good one “I want to marry you, Kai Hadez.
