The freezing conditions of the morgue had made Siin to contemplate if saving the child from its mother's warm womb would be better than exposing it to the frosty morgue, but then he realised that baby had a greater chance of dying from lack of oxygen than dying of Cold.
" There has to be a towel here somewhere ." Said Siin almost in a whisper, as he searched for a towel. He had concluded that, should the baby be successfully separated from it's mother it needed to be wrapped in warm clothing and nylon was a a poor conductor of heat. He needed to be proactive by getting all necessary materials ready so that his operation would be free of a casualty. After searching frantically without being able to spot any towel or clothing materials in the morgue. Siin found a sack containing cotton wool which was also a tool in the Autopsy unit. He realized that he could rap the baby in cotton wool and prevent it from freezing and quickly grabbed hold of the whole sack.
Without wasting any more time., Siin hurried back to the pregnant corpse to commence the surgery. He reached out for the surgical blade he had gotten from the Autopsy unit and was about to put it to good use when suddenly paused. he felt he knew nothing about performing an cessarean operation or any other operation at all, yet a strong instinct to carefully cut the infant out of it's mother womb was the only thought that occupied his head. He knew it was the only possibility left to saving the baby and there was no need to delay what must be done. His mind became at ease when he spotted the weak motions on the surface of the pregnant womans belly , which indicated that the baby was still alive. He took the surgical blade which he had earlier kept, in doubt of his skills, and held it firmly in his hand.
" The dead don't feel pain." He whispered to himself as his breathing became faster. The thought of cutting open a human being had projected itself to be something vile and heartless and it had slowed down his urge to save the baby. Ultimately he knew that, what must be done , had to be done to save the life of the infant that was slowly dying in the enclave of it's mother's womb which was running out of oxygen. He took several deep breaths, and with instinctive knowledge, began to work his way towards delivering the Child from the enclave of it's freezing host.
Chapter 10 ( De javu)
Few minutes into the surgical act and Siin was able to fetch out the baby and detached it's unblical cord from it's mother's womb. Surprisingly to Siin. The inner portions of the young ladies body hard been warm even though her outer skin was almost completely frozen.
He inverted the baby boy and tapped it's back till it threw up a liquid element and began to cry. Siin quickly wrapped the baby in the cotton wool making sure it was warm and protected from the severe cold. The only challenge was getting the baby out of the freezing vicinity and also getting milk for the child. He looked at young lady's face and now the Sadness on her face was no more. The tears had also ceased to roll from her eyes as what ever had been making her bitter was no longer in existence. A closer look at her face and Siin could almost make out a smile on her face. She lay dead but looked so alive as if to speak to Siin who already knew the words she obviously had for him.
" You are welcome. Your baby boy will survive . He shall live to be a testimony of a merciful encounter." Said Siin , to corpse of the woman. For Siin that particular moment felt so similar to him. He felt he had been in a similar situation before , but couldn't remember any occurrences prior to waking up on the morticians table. All he knew was that the condition of both mother and child_ aroused a feeling ,which he had experienced in his past.
However he knew that it wasn't time to spend the minutes trying to recall why the whole moment seemed so familiar, he needed to get the child to safety before it froze to death . For the first and last time , he placed the baby on the freezing bossom of it's mother not for it to suckle but for it have a feel of what a mothers warmth and affinity was. He then took off the baby away from her bossom, covered her body with the nylon sheet and headed back to the exit door while the baby cried aloud. Unlike Siin who had a faint tone in his voice due to the effects of getting exposed to the severe conditions of the freezing cold, the baby was full of life with and basked with surprising energy . it's cry was so loud that it echoed across the hall.
Siin kept on hitting the door with his right hand with no avail. He held the baby who was warmly wrapped in wool close to his heart with his other hand while he kept on banging on the metal door with the other hand.
" Please let me out .Help the little one. Don't let him die." He cried softly in despair. He rushed back to the autopsy unit where a he had earlier caught the glimpse of a metal bowl that held some cutting tools. He grabbed the bowl and headed back to the exit door with all the speed he could ganer from his stiff body. Siin banged the metal bowl against the door and it made a loud noise which startled the baby and made it cry the more.
" We will have to cry our way out of this place child." Said Siin to the baby as he banged the door harder with metal bowl. There was no need to spare the rod and spoil the child neither was there a need to spare the bowl and kill the child, Siin thought as he constantly banged the door with the metal bowl, ignoring the fact that it startled the baby and made it cry out loud. He wanted someone to hear the sounds they had been emanating as that was the only way they could be taken out of this freezing Cell.
Minutes later and things were not looking good for Siin. He was running out of energy and the baby was running out on heat. The loudness of it's cries had greatly detoriated owing largely to the freezing conditions of the motuary.
" Help! Somebody help us please..." Siin cried as he felt helpless not only to himself but to the baby he had gone the extra mile to save .
" You shall not die , little one . You will live a long and fruitful life." Said Siin as he comforted the baby whose cries were getting faint by the seconds. He could see the striking resemblance of the striking resemblance of the child to it's mother. Unlike the mother thin lips which had been pale , the lips of the baby was crimson in colour and his blue eyes were a replica of that of his mother. The striking resemblance of the two family members made Siin even more emotional. He felt sorry for the young lady who may have nursed a dream of raising her son and watching him grow to adult hood. But more than anything, he felt sorry for the little child who was to fare the challenging journey of life, without the love and guidance of a mother. At that point Siin also felt sorry for himself for reasons he could comprehend. He knew too well that it wasn't the fact that he was in a freezing mortuary that made him emotional, rather it was something different and he had couldn't recall what it was. He held the baby warmly to his chest and kept banging the door with the iron bowl in wait of what ever faith that awaited him and the baby he had gone through all the stress to birth from it's mother's womb. The only two humans alive in the freezing mortuary were running out of heat and it was a matter of time before their fate became even , with the rest of the inhabitants that lay motionless on the tables.
" We shall not die here." Siin said to the Baby as he gentle tapped the wool around it to stop it from crying. He decided to save his energy and try a passive method, which would give him more time. The duo of exhaustion and hypertemia was not a condition Siin was willing to Slide into. Once again, he wrapped baby warmly and sat down on the freezing floor with his back against the exit door. At that moment . He began to reach deep into his memory to who he was and what events had brought him here in the first place. He also wanted to understand why he felt so much connection to the situation of the mother and her child. Siin was still at sea, in understanding his personality. When he noticed a paper tag that was clipped to one of his toes. He quickly yanked it off and it came off easily due the moist action of frost. The tag carried a name and the time of death. Siin read the words slowly severally untill it began to make sense to him.
"MR Siin Sebanyi. Date of death 5 of may 1985, time of death 2 am. " Said Siin as he read out the content of the tag
The name Siin kept on ringing in his head as he was a blank in memory as the infant he held in his hand.
" Siin Sebanyi . " He muttered as he gazed fully at the tag as if to ask it for more answers. He looked towards the heavens slowly and a flash of events, his memory was restored to him.
" Kaltumi." He said and sprang up in the light of new awareness.
