Chapter Three

2927 Words
“Why would you do that? I explicitly told her she wasn’t allowed to see that girl again!” Dylan yelled after I told him about the dinner plans. “I know and I apologize for doing this without discussing that with you, it was wrong, but she needs to see that we accept and love her for who she is and she doesn’t have to hide herself from us!” “I’m not making her hide!”  “No, but she may feel like we are. She has a girlfriend, she is thirteen. At thirteen we were both dating people and feeling puppy love. She is sneaking out because she knows we don’t approve of the fact that her girlfriend is human but what message does that send when we have Austin and Addie here nearly every day? Maybe if she realizes that we will welcome her and whoever she is dating with open arms, she may open up and come around. She just needs to realize that no matter what, we will love her.” I was trying to reason and I knew that on a level my mate understood but he was also angry which I understood.  “But I love her no matter what!” “We both do and I’m sure on some level she understands that but she doesn’t feel it. Right now what she feels is pushed away and controlled. She needs to feel loved.” I put a hand on his cheek as my voice softened but he shrugged away from my touch, causing me to flinch. “I’ll take the babies with us so you can have a night off. Just relax and enjoy your evening. Maybe you, Zach, and Merrick can have a boys night? You haven’t had one in a while. We have both been so stressed lately, a night off is deserved.” My voice didn’t hold the same loving tone it previously did but it was still gentle. “I understand you are angry, I should have discussed this with you before telling her it was okay. But you also should have discussed with me the fact that you told her she couldn’t see the girl again before you did.” “She isn’t your child Blake.” The venom in his voice sparked anger in me. “You are not allowed to say that. You can not have me come home everyday to her and cook her dinner and take her shopping and spend time with her just like I do the twins. You can not turn her into someone that I care for physically and emotionally just as our children and then tell me she is not my child. You turned her into my child and I will forever be grateful for that but that doesn’t give you the right to turn her into my responsibility and then say that when you’re mad about a decision I made. I am taking the kids and we are going to dinner with Allyssa’s girlfriend because she is mine and I would like to know who she is spending her nights with since it is such a pain for her to spend them with us.” I walked out of the room and slammed the door behind me only to see the girl we were discussing standing in the hallway. I knew Ally had heard everything from the pained expression on her face but she still plastered on a fake smile when we made eye contact. “Are you ready to go, love bug?” I smiled softly. “Yeah.” Her tone of voice was short. We made our way downstairs where the twins were spending some quality time with their aunt and uncle.  “Hello my babies.” I grinned once Rose and Gabriel saw me walk into their playroom. Gabriel immediately started crawling toward me while Rose started to head toward Allyssa. Dylan and Allyss looked so similar they could be twins so it makes sense that Rose would gravitate toward her. Ally bent down to pick the baby up as I did the same with Gabe. “You got her?” I quizzed Ally to make sure she was okay. “Yeah.”  Ally looked down at Rose in her arms, both of them gazing lovingly at the other. It truly was a wonderful sight. “Thank you for watching them today. Dylan just had so much to do and it was a big day for me.” I finally acknowledged the other adults in the room. “Of course.” Dani grinned. Zach walked over and wrapped his arms around me before speaking. “I heard you guys yelling.” He whispered in my ear. “I’ll take him out and let him cool down. He didn’t mean what he said.”  I used the arm that wasn’t holding my son to wrap around him and accept his warmth. Dylan and I had been so stressed since I had the twins that we were never on the same page anymore, not like that was a common thing to begin with, and I just wished we could spend time together like we used to.  “Alright, we have a girl to go pickup. If you guys want, I can get you food on the way home.”  Zach was about to wave me off but Dani immediately perked up at the prospect.  “I want the biggest cheeseburger you can find.” She looked like she was salivating already. “Girl where do you put it?!” Zach laughed at the petite woman but she just shrugged. I gave them both a hug goodbye and walked to my car with the kids. Allyssa put Rose in her carseat while I did the same with Gabriel before we both climbed into the front seats.  “So where am I going?” I looked at Ally as I put the car in drive. She continued to guide me the entire way to this girl's house, which was only a thirty minute drive, until we were parked in her driveway. I watched her pull out her phone to text the girl while we waited in silence. A few seconds later a petite girl with dirty blonde hair and blue eyes walked out of the bright yellow house. I looked to my right to see Allyssa with the biggest grin I had ever seen her wear before she got out of the car and hugged her girlfriend. They spoke for a second before I watched Allyssa go to the back seat to squeeze between the carseats and let her girlfriend take the passenger seat next to me. “Hi Ally’s mom.” She whispered shyly. I was about to correct her until I met Allyssa’s gaze in my rearview mirror that told me not to.  “Hello, what’s your name?” I gave her a warm smile which made her visibly calm down. “I’m Emily.” “That’s a lovely name. Do you girls have a preference for where we eat?” “Chinese!” Ally exclaimed abruptly without giving Emily a chance to speak.  “Allyssa, give your girlfriend a chance to talk.” I chastised playfully. I glanced back toward Emily and watched her eyes go wide as I said the word ‘girlfriend’. Allyssa had told me they were dating so I didn’t think it was bad to call them girlfriends and Ally had no visible reaction to it but it seemed to really bother Emily.  “Chinese is fine.” She whispered. I took note of her responses to what was spoken about as I drove to a chinese restaurant nearby. She seemed like a very cautious and fearful girl. Ally and I kept up a conversation in the car but Emily seemed to not want to be a part of it. “We’re here.” I announced as I pulled into a parking spot. “Ally, help me with the babies?”  “Yep.” She grinned at me as we all got out. I could feel Allyssa’s happiness radiate off of her and through me as we walked into the restaurant. Emily seemed to calm down in a more neutral atmosphere but was still tense. I got the babies in the highchairs and sat next to them, across from Emilly and Allyssa who were holding hands under the table. The waitress came and took our orders while we still sat in a tense silence. “Umm, I have to go to the bathroom.” Emily announced so Ally gave her a comforting smile before she walked away. “Why is she so scared?” I quizzed once the girl was out of earshot. “Her mom is really homophobic so she gets nervous around new people because she is scared of how they are going to treat her.” I watched anger flash behind her eyes, the same anger that her older brother wore like a medal. “She was especially nervous to meet you but I talked her into it.”  Ally seemed to have been hiding something but I dropped it when I heard Emily’s feet approaching. She sat down next to Allyssa but scooted closer to her than before. She seemed genuinely frightened by my company and it made my heart hurt for her situation.  “So, Emily. Tell me about yours-” “I know you’re a wolf!”  My sentence was cut off by her abrupt announcement that made my heart beat ten times faster. I immediately opened my mind to hers as her mind replayed the fuzzy memory of Allyssa shifting in front of her. I couldn't even deny it because the girl had seen it with her own eyes. My heart started to beat in my ears as I decided on the best thing to do as I sat there in silence.  Ignore it. I thought to myself.  Ignore the situation until we are in a private space where this can be discussed. This is not a discussion I want to have with a human child in a human setting, that is dangerous.  “Emily, tell me about yourself?” I grit my teeth as I spoke but still finished with a polite smile. The disappointment and frustration filling my senses from Ally’s actions were evident in the way I acted and I was worried that Emily would think I was acting this way because of her. Both of the girls found their own conversation when I obviously stopped responding. Everytime the frustration would rise I would remember that I did the exact same thing as Ally, I was only a couple of years older. Austin is a human and I told a human boy that I loved what I was which is no different than Allyssa telling Emily but it was still dangerous. This must have been how my parents felt when I told them what I had done. We ate our food in silence, myself occasionally talking to the twins as they babbled to themselves.  “Are you both done eating?” I quizzed. Both girls gave me a nervous nod while pushing their plates forward. I didn’t bother waiting for the check, instead leaving a lot more cash on the table than what the meal cost. We continued our dance of silence while I put the twins in the car and we resumed our previous seats but I didn’t drive once everyone was buckled in. “We’re going to have a conversation.” I spoke allowed and watched Emily visibly start shaking. “Sweet heart, I am not going to hurt you. I will never hurt you in any way, if Allyssa loves you then I love you and you don’t hurt the people you love.” I laid a gentle hand on her shoulder causing her to relax before I turned around in my seat to face the girl in the backseat. “What all did you tell her?” She fiddled with her fingers and stared into her lap like it was the most interesting thing in the world before responding. “Just that I’m a wolf and you’re a super cool witch, wolf, healer hybrid and that Dylan is the Alpha and our entire family and lineage is wolves.” She whispered but spoke quickly.  I pinched the bridge of my nose as I felt a migraine coming on. “Ally, you know the rules and you knew better than this. Humans can not be trusted.” “I won’t tell anyone.” I heard the petite girl whisper to me but this tone of voice was unlike one I had heard all evening. She was determined and hopeful. I could feel her fear radiate off of her but this fear was different from earlier, this was a fear of losing the one that you love. “I’m sure you won’t, but when one person finds out, other people find out.” I smiled curtly at her. “I haven’t told anyone else!” Ally was trying to defend herself but it wasn’t working. “You shouldn’t have told anyone in the first place, Allyssa. Now we have to go home and tell Dylan and you know how well that is going to go over.”  “What?! No! You don’t have to tell him! Blake, please don’t tell him. Please!” “I do have to tell him. This is a serious situation and it is not something I can hide from him, Allyssa.”  I could see the pain in her eyes as she registered my words. “He is going to hate me.” She whispered. I reached my left hand to her and cupped the side of her face making her look at me. “He is your big brother, he could never hate you.” We sat in silence for a moment before I remembered that I still had to take Emily home. I turned back in my seat and buckled before starting the car to drive. As I drove I kept glancing at both girls who were obviously engrossed in their phones so I knew they were texting each other. What kind of pull did this girl have with Ally for her to tell her so quickly? I told Austin quickly because I felt a connection to him, I thought he was my mate. Could Emily really be Allyssa’s mate or was Ally just being reckless. My brain started to hurt once more.     I pulled back into the driveway that I had picked Emily up from hours ago but when I parked she didn’t make any move to get out of my car. “Allyssa told me your mom isn’t respectful of who you are.” I spoke softly before looking at the young girl. When she heard my words her face morphed into one of sadness and defeat. “You are a beautiful, smart, and courageous young woman, and maybe I’m biased but you obviously have good taste in girls because you picked Ally. If your mom can’t be there for you through this then that is her loss. If you ever need a bonus mom, even if just for an hour to talk, I am a phone call away. I hope to be seeing a lot more of you Emily.” The bright blue eyes that gave her every emotion away brimmed with tears before she reached over and wrapped her arms around my neck. “You are always welcome in my home.” I whispered as I welcomed her embrace. I felt her tears fall onto my shoulders before she pulled away and opened the car door to get out without a response but her reaction was the only response I needed. Allyssa got out from the backseat and walked her girlfriend to the door, spending a moment talking and then hugging before coming back and taking the passenger seat again. “Thank you, Blake. For everything.” She whispered as I started the car. “Everyone deserves love, and if her mom can’t be the one to give that to her, I have enough to go around. But that doesn’t mean you aren’t going to be in trouble for this, what you did was reckless.” “I know that you’re upset but she is different, there is something about that makes me know that we’re safe. When I’m with her, it’s just different.” She looked back down at her lap as a smile stole her expression away. “That is the same way I felt with Austin. What you did was reckless and dangerous, but it is also what I’ve told you to do from the beginning. You trusted your gut, and for that, I’m proud of you.”
