ARIZONA REPUBLIC NEWSPAPER 9 AM At the office early, I go through my phone messages from the previous day. There is a call from a Detective Chester Williams of the Colorado Springs Police Department. I return the call. He says, “We have a missing young girl that may resemble your Jane Doe.” “Great. Do you have any photographs of her?” “Yes, a couple. I will put one in the mail to your attention at the paper.” I thank him and remember to ask her name. His response: “Esmeralda Schwartzmann.” Could that possibly be the “Emme” that the trucker met? Now I am anxious to get the mail and see her picture. The name sounds like she might be German. Maybe that was the accent the trucker noticed. “One last question before you hang up, Detective Williams. How long has this girl been missing?”
