Physical exam

In her office, Dr. Cassandra read through the patroller report and her previous notes from examining the she-wolf. She knew that a thorough physical and mental health check was necessary to have a chance at helping her regain her memories. “Not much to go on,” she mused to her wolf. Dr. Cassandra’s wolf was named Izzy, a sleek and agile black wolf with black eyes that seemed to see through you. Her fur was soft to the touch and glimmered in the moonlight, with a white crescent marking on her chest. Izzy was brilliant and wise, often sensing things that others could not. “What do you expect from patrollers? It’s like if you’re new to this pack!” Izzy snorted. Dr. Cassandra could imagine Izzy rolling her eyes at her. It’s true. At least in this pack, patrollers were not known for their detailed reports. Dr. Cassandra smiled inwardly at her wolf. “I am about to perform a physical and mental health check on a she-wolf who has lost her memories. I need your help to guide me through the process.” “I am always here to help Doc,” her wolf replied. There were rumours among the pack that Dr. Cassandra and Izzy shared a more profound connection than most werewolves and their wolves, but no one knew for sure. Some claimed that Izzy had the key to uncovering Dr. Cassandra's past, while others believed that Izzy's mysterious origins were linked to hers. Together, Dr. Cassandra and her wolf Izzy worked to develop a plan for the examination. They discussed the best way to approach the she-wolf, considering her physical state and emotional needs. They also discussed the importance of connecting with her to help her feel safe and supported during the examination. As Dr. Cassandra approached the she-wolf’s room, she smiled warmly, trying to put her at ease. “Hi again,” she said. The she-wolf nodded silently, looking down at her hands. “I guess you’re here for the physical examination like you said earlier?” She asked shyly. Dr. Cassandra carefully examined the she-wolf, starting with a gentle yet firm palpation of different body parts. She checked the she-wolf’s eyes, ears, and nose, looking for abnormalities. As she inspected the she-wolf’s ears, she asked if there were any issues with hearing or pain. The she-wolf responded that her ears seemed fine, but given her amnesia, it was challenging to conduct a thorough examination. Moving on to the she-wolf’s nose, Dr. Cassandra ensured no signs of infection. She asked the she-wolf to take deep breaths while listening to her lungs, which sounded healthy. Dr. Cassandra then requested the she-wolf to sit up for a spine check and assess her range of motion. Running her hands along the she-wolf’s spine, Dr. Cassandra found no abnormalities. Next, she asked the she-wolf to stand up and perform a few movements, such as walking a few steps and touching her toes. Dr. Cassandra observed closely, looking for any signs of discomfort or difficulty. Dr. Cassandra finished the physical part of her exam. “Everything looks great,” she said, smiling. Next, Dr. Cassandra moved on to her mental health. She knew that this part of the examination would be more difficult. The she-wolf hesitated at first but eventually opened up. “At one point, I realized I was running. I stopped. I looked around and realized I didn’t recognize anything. I couldn’t remember anything about myself - not my name, not where I came from, or where I was going. The trees, bushes, the path, everything was unknown. It was like a part of me was missing, a part that held all my memories and experiences.” Dr. Cassandra listened intently to the she-wolf’s story, nodding empathetically. “That must have been frightening for you,” she said softly. “But you’re safe now, and we’re going to do everything we can to help you remember who you are.” The she-wolf nodded, grateful for the doctor’s kind words. “I think I want to remember, but part of me is scared of what I’ll find out,” she said. “I want to know who I am and where I come from. But…” Dr. Cassandra smiled warmly. “We’re going to start by doing some tests to see how your brain is functioning,” she explained. “We want to ensure no underlying medical issues that could be causing your memory loss.” The she-wolf nodded again, and Dr. Cassandra began administering cognitive tests. She asked the she-wolf to remember a list of words, to count backwards from 100 by sevens, and to draw a clock showing a specific time. The she-wolf answered each question to the best of her ability, but Dr. Cassandra could tell she was struggling. After completing the tests, Dr. Cassandra sat beside the she-wolf and took a deep breath. “Based on these results, I think you may be suffering from dissociative amnesia,” she said gently. The she-wolf looked at her, confused. “What does that mean?” “It means that your mind has blocked out certain memories to protect you from emotional trauma,” Dr. Cassandra explained. “It’s not uncommon for people who have experienced a traumatic event.” The she-wolf’s eyes widened. “What kind of trauma?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Dr. Cassandra shrugged and then hesitated to continue, not wanting to upset the she-wolf any further. “I can’t say for certain,” she said carefully. “But it’s possible that something very traumatic happened to you.” The she-wolf looked down at her hands, a sad expression on her face. “What do I do now?” she asked. Dr. Cassandra reached out and gently took the she-wolf’s hand. “We’re going to work together to help you remember,” she said firmly. “We’ll start with talk therapy to help you process any emotions blocking your memories. And we’ll do some relaxation exercises to help you reduce your stress levels, which can make it harder to remember things.” The she-wolf nodded slowly, a glimmer of hope in her eyes. “Thank you,” she whispered. “Thank you for helping me.” Dr. Cassandra smiled warmly. “It’s my pleasure,” she said. “I’ll be here for you every step of the way.” Dr. Cassandra nodded sympathetically. “We can also help you discover some new interests in the meantime,” she said. “We have a lot of activities and events here in the pack. I’m sure you’ll find something you enjoy.” The she-wolf nodded gratefully, seeming relieved to have some answers. “Thank you,” she said softly. She left the she-wolf in her hospital room, wished her a good day, and headed to the pack house to meet Alpha Gabriel. Dr. Cassandra could tell that the she-wolf was still a bit frightened and confused, but she hoped that the welcoming environment of the pack would help her feel more comfortable and secure. Dr. Cassandra knocked on Alpha Gabriel’s office door before entering. She found him sitting behind his desk, reviewing some reports. He looked up at her as she entered the room and motioned for her to sit. “Good afternoon, Dr. Cassandra. What can I do for you?” Alpha Gabriel asked. “Good afternoon, Alpha Gabriel. I wanted to update you on the physical and mental examination of the she-wolf,” Dr. Cassandra replied, sitting in the chair across from him. “Please, go on,” Alpha Gabriel said, leaning forward in his chair. “I ran a full physical and mental health check on the she-wolf, and while she is physically healthy, her mental state is concerning,” Dr. Cassandra began. “In my professional opinion, she has dissociative amnesia and cannot remember anything about herself or her past. This could be due to trauma or some other unknown factor.” Alpha Gabriel’s expression turned serious. Alpha Gabriel leaned back in his chair, deep in thought. “Do you have any theories about what might have happened to her?” “I’m not sure. I want to keep a close eye on her and monitor her progress,” Dr. Cassandra said, looking at Alpha Gabriel. Doc took in a deep breath. “May I speak freely?” she asked Gabriel hesitantly. He nodded, encouraging her to go on. “This is not based on observation, but it’s a gut feeling I have when I’m around this she-wolf. She has a powerful energy, and I feel she is meant to be here and cross our paths.” Doc trailed off. “You’re not the only one,” Alpha Gabriel said, standing up. “In the meantime, we need to ensure the she-wolf is well cared for and has everything she needs.” “I’ll make sure of it, Alpha Gabriel,” Dr. Cassandra said, standing up as well. Alpha Gabriel nodded and walked Dr. Cassandra to the door. “Thank you for your hard work and dedication, Doc. We are fortunate to have you as our pack doctor.” As she left, Gabriel thought he knew little about the pack doctor.
