Chapter 21: The Family Council
The drive to Zara’s house was a blur of nervous laughter and rehearsed speeches. By the time they parked the car, Zara’s phone was already buzzing continuously in her purse. Auntie Yasmin’s community news network had worked faster than downtown traffic.
When they walked through the front door, the entire house smelled heavily of cardamom and roasted pine nuts. Zara’s mother was already in the kitchen, frantically rolling out fresh dough, while her father sat in his usual armchair, pretending to read the evening newspaper but failing to conceal his broad grin.
"Assalamu Alaikum," Zayd said as he stepped into the foyer. He stood tall, though his fingers tightly gripped the strap of his briefcase.
"Walaikum Assalam," Zara’s father replied, setting his newspaper down on the coffee table. He looked at Zayd, then at his daughter, noting the radiant, undeniable glow on Zara's face. "Come in, sit down. It seems the neighborhood is full of rumors today, but I prefer to hear the truth from the source."
Zayd sat on the velvet sofa, choosing his words with immense care and respect. "Uncle, when we first met a few weeks ago, I was not in the right mindset for marriage. But over the last month, Zara and I have worked side-by-side to build a charitable children's clinic. In doing so, I have witnessed her incredible intellect, her deep piety, and her boundless compassion. I did not come today because my mother asked me to. I am here to formally ask for your daughter’s hand in marriage, because I cannot imagine a future without her."
Zara watched from the doorway, her breath catching in her throat. Her father remained silent for a long moment, his eyes scanning Zayd's face. Finally, a deep, warm smile broke through his stern expression. He stood up, walking over to Zayd and enveloping him in a warm, fatherly embrace.
"Alhamdulillah," her father whispered. "I have been praying for a man who would appreciate my daughter’s grand dreams, not stifle them. You have my full blessing, my boy." From the kitchen doorway, Zara’s mother let out a celebratory cry of joy, tears streaming down her face as she rushed forward to hug her daughter. The formal arrangement had officially transformed into true love.
