Disappointed
Mc-Canister is a restaurant located a few blocks away from the company where I submitted my application for an accountancy job that I didn't get. They didn't bother to call me for an interview, but I wasn't really surprised. I sniffed and raised my head from the table I had laid it. The air inside here was chilly. But outside, it was quite the opposite— it was mid October after all. It was either the restaurant 's AC was in good working condition or I was just feeling the cold because I wore a white singlet on a blue stock jeans— no heavy clothes. I had been around here before, I thought. The last time I came to this neighborhood, I didn't have the time to explore, and it wasn't even close to my home. I didn't have any business here. I was so interested on the job I came to find. I had been sitting in this new wooden chair for the past thirty to forty minutes. I had been waiting for my sweet, lovely boyfriend, Jake, but he hadn’t arrived yet. I kept my eyes busy by watching the TV that was hung up on a wall very close to me. It had nice countryside music playing. From the corner I sat, I was the only one seated for like ten minutes. An elderly woman came later on. She wore a rich ceremonial black suit, more like a military queen in an English army in the eighteenth century. You would know she was rich and retired. She had tired eyes enclosed in transparent eye lenses. She had razor lips with age lines across both ends of her mouth. She was about eight to ten feet away from me. Close to her was an elderly man who came with her and sat just opposite her. The man wore a native Mexican outfit, mixed with various color degrees. The man had a big brown hat on his head. The hat failed to cover all his gray hair. Additionally, he had a scarf around his neck. On their table, they had crunchy salad, a mixture of chopped raw veggies, fresh fruits, shredded hard cheeses, served in a single golden ceramic plate with two spoons. I sensed that they could be couples who had stuck together with each other for decades and still very much enjoy their closeness and friendship. I also loved the fact that they ate healthy foods. I smiled and watched sheepishly as both of them brushed their lips with each other. I wasn’t sure if they knew I was watching but I just wished they would continue— don't stop.. The man dug up some of the veggies and slowly gave it to his wife. She smiled as she gently ate it. In my mind, I imagined myself growing very old with Jake. Jake was the guy whom I had given my love to after I graduated from campus last summer. I never really felt comfortable hanging out with random dudes. I had even graduated as a virgin but lost it to Jake on the night of my graduation. He was this guy whom my heart had melted for in ages of being super selective and picky. I wanted him to be the man who would put a ring in my finger and the man who would hold my arm and offer me protection even at old age. Jake had always cared for me and taken care of most of my financial problems since I graduated. I mean, I had searched for a job but I hadn't found a suitable job for a graduate like me. I knew the reason why most companies hadn’t called me for an interview and that was because my result was poor— I graduated with a third class. But I liked the practical aspect of everything I studied in school more than the theoretical aspect. Granted, if they weren’t all an ass, maybe one company could have at least given me a call so I could show them what I could offer. I was already getting impatient as I sat alone waiting for Jake. I stared out the glass windows adjacent my right hand. The windows stood tall enough that it threw enough bright light in the whole room. As I sat gently, I caught a lot of interesting views outside the restaurant . Along the stool of the window frames were flower vases carefully laid on all the edges such that it made the whole windows attractive and well taken care of. Outside the windows, tall pine trees cascaded shadow on the ground. Moulded cement chairs mounted solidly under the palm trees, exactly on the spot the shadows from the palm filled the ground. Native love birds chirped merrily on tree branches outside the restaurant. Lots of vehicles and bicycles parked right under the trees and few people sat under the shadows created— even if the cement chairs were all occupied. I couldn’t help but smile as I watched with my eyes. A lot of things had caused me to smile. The old couple close to me with their love life and affection still burned like a new candle, the birds on the trees chirping and singing merrily, and then the summer afternoon that made everywhere so calm, peaceful and quiet. Could there be anything else that made me smile? Christ, Chicago has always been fun in summer. At this point, I stopped checking my time and almost forgot that I had been waiting for someone. My phone rang and quickly got it out of my purse. “Hi sis,” I said smiling. “I hope you got the address I sent you?” “Yup. Saw it, Sussie, but—” “But what?” I asked quickly. I already had a sick feeling to my gut that she wasn’t going to come. “Tell me you are coming.” I felt my brows arching. “If I am coming, I wouldn’t have called you. I know my way around this city and finding you wouldn’t be difficult to the slightest. Just that, something came up, I wanna get them fixed. A'it?” Why wasn’t I surprised? I bit my lower lip regrettably. I clenched my left wrist into a fist and hit it twice on my lap. “But I already told you Jake would be here pretty soon and I would want you to meet him before any other person. C’mon, it’s been over a year and you haven’t had the chance to meet my boyfriend. That doesn’t seem right at all. I feel like I am walking down the road alone.” I had always shared my secrets with my sister. She was the only one that knew everything about me. I don't share as many secrets as I share with her with my dad. “Sorry to disappoint you, Sussie, but I’m goin' to make up for it, believe me. I’m going to see him when I am going to see him. And that would be pretty soon. Pretty, pretty soon. I love you.” I would have told her I loved her too but she would think I wasn’t serious. “And when is that going to be? Time? Interval? Date? You ain’t being specific here, sister.” “It’s going to be pretty soon, this very week at least. I won't postpone it, believe me.” “F U C K to you.” I spelt out the words one by one. I looked at the old couple, I wanted to know if they heard what I had just told my sister but they seemed unperturbed. She bubbled into a dry laugh. “Ha-ha. If that’s going to make you happy then it’s fine. Kisses and good-bye.” She hung up. I hit my palm in my forehead thrice and blew a strand of my hair that blocked my left eye until it settled behind my chin. I had invited Jake to see me at this restaurant simply because I wanted him to meet my stepsister, Annabelle. She was twenty three, two years younger than me. "We both had contrasting physical features. While she was plump, I was slimmer. She stood at 5’1 while I was 5’6 ft tall. Her hips were curvy while mine were diamond-shaped. Annabelle had straight, neat, blonde hair that stopped just above her shoulders, similar to my dad's, while my long black hair spread all the way to my lower back." Annabelle had distinctively pretty gray eyes, while mine burned with sapphire blue. Jake had told me several times that I looked like a mermaid. I wish I could see a real mermaid someday, if they actually exist. Everything about Annabelle was pretty. Boys would usually stop her while both of us walked down the street. She was the type that wouldn’t really give a f**k about her outfit. She could dress to kill. She would always tell me that she dresses to help men check their erection. Yup, she was that hot. Someone’s lips enveloped mine and I felt the richness and wetness. A tiny jolt went down my spine, rushed down through my nape and I let my lips shut open. I didn’t open my eyes. I didn’t need to. His smell was all over my nose. He was driving me crazy. My back stiffened and I tightened my eyes. I didn’t even struggle to open them. There was no need for that. I knew I was safe in his arms, whether my eyes were open or not. Jake gently withdrew his lips and stepped back a little. I took my time to catch my breath before I finally opened my eyes to see him standing.
