"Lucia, do you think I'm dumb?" Mason demanded threateningly. "You can go visit your grandma alone tomorrow! f**k off!"
"No, I apologize! I'm sorry, alright?"
But when Lucia finished, she realized Mason had already hung up.
"Petty asshole!" She made a face at the phone but still added Mason's number to the contacts list as if receiving a big treasure.
She typed "husband" for the name, but it didn't feel right. She deleted it.
What should she name his contact?
Her eyes curved in mischief, and she cackled, typing in "pig."
It was his fault for bullying her!
Hmph!
In the morning, Lucia went to her original company to submit her resignation letter. Then she went to the Reynolds Group.
Standing at the entrance, she looked up at the skyscraper soaring into the clouds. The blue sky reflected from the glass windows, and the golden sign dazzled under the sun. It was so bright that it hurt her eyes.
The building was magnificent, as expected of the famous Reynolds Group.
In the past, she'd hid in the shadows. Now, she could stand at the entrance and even walk in with her head held high. Her heart squeezed nervously.
The job fair was very big. There were many applicants, and the competition was quite high.
Lucia sat on the side, waiting for her interview. She looked calm, but inside, her stomach was roiling.
Fortunately, her interview went well. She jumped over all the obstacles and successfully got hired as a secretary. She would start work on Monday.
She called Mason's number in excitement to share her happiness.
"Mason, I passed the interview!" She was so excited that her voice quivered.
"You called me just for that?"
His cold voice extinguished Lucia's joy.
"No, I wanted to ask if you're off work yet. Will you eat dinner at home?"
"No."
Mason uttered that single word and hung up.
Lucia made a face. Did Mason think he was a hot shot?
She had more than enough options!
She planned on calling her best friend Susan, but as if they could read each other's minds, her phone rang. Susan's name lit up on the screen.
"Lulu, where you at?"
"Reynolds Group. I just finished a job interview."
Then Lucia moved the phone away from her ear. As expected, Susan's excited shriek streamed out of her phone.
"What? Reynolds Group?! Are you gonna work with the man of your dreams? Oh my god, Lulu, congrats! I'm so happy for you!"
Susan was being genuine. They'd been best friends since high school, and they told each other everything.
But now, Lucia had a secret. She hadn't told Susan about her marriage to Mason.
How would Susan react if she found out? Would she jump in excitement?
Lucia imagined Susan's reaction and giggled. "Susie, how are you gonna celebrate with me?"
"Wait for me at our old place. I'll take you out tonight!"
Susan hung up as soon as she finished speaking. Lucia couldn't help but shake her head and chuckle wryly. Her friend had always been whimsical and energetic.
She was a year younger than Lucia, but she acted like the big sister. Lucia wondered what Susan had planned for tonight!
Around 7 PM
"Susie, this is the place you decided to take me out to?"
Lucia glanced at the luxurious cars parked outside Empire Club and shot a suspicious look at her friend.
She wasn't much of a party girl, but she knew that Empire Club was a classy club. You could eat, drink and dance all night, but it was hard to get into.
"Hehe." Susan slung an arm over Lucia's shoulders and batted her lashes. "Are you surprised? Are you excited?"
"Super surprised, super excited," Lucia drawled as she rolled her eyes. She removed Susan's arm from her shoulders and said, "I'm not going in."
"Oh, c'mon Lulu. Not even to have fun with me?" Susan tugged on Lucia's hand and looked up with puppy eyes.
"Tell me the truth. What's the catch?" Lucia didn't trust this.
"It's not as dramatic as you're making it. All you'll get is eye candy." Susan had her arm around Lucia's shoulders again. She purposely put on a pitiful look. "It's a socializing event, and I went through so much to get two spots. Since I worked so hard, just patronize me, please? I promise it's the last time."
She stuck up a finger and pouted at Lucia.
This so-called "socializing event" was just a euphemism for a dating event.
Lucia still remembered the last time Susan dragged her to one of these. She ended up having a weird, clingy hipster annoy her for months. She still felt traumatized.
"Nope," Lucia said proudly, arching her eyebrow. "I have someone already."
"I know you have someone already, but you can forget about him tonight!" Susan pleaded. "Lulu, you already got into his company, while I'm 22 years old and still a virgin! I don't even know what it's like to love someone. Just pity me, please…"
What did it feel like to love someone?
When Lucia heard this, she mumbled to herself, "Bitter."
"Huh?"
Susan didn't hear what she said.
"I said, fine."
Lucia decided to have fun tonight. Even if she went home, it would just be an empty house.
"Yes! Lulu, you're the best!" Susan hugged Lucia and pecked her cheek.
"Susie, you're disgusting." Lucia made a face and wiped the place where Susan had kissed her, but her smile betrayed her.
Then Susan studied Lucia and suddenly reached over, undoing the top two buttons of her shirt.
"Hey, what are you doing?" Lucia yelped. Her hands flew up to cover up her exposed skin. She'd dressed up in a white collared shirt and dark gray skirt for this afternoon's interview.
"You're not allowed to button it up. You're so pretty, but you dress like a freaking nun. No wonder it's been seven years, and you still haven't gotten your man." While complaining about her, Susan undid Lucia's ponytail and combed the hair with her fingers.
Lucia rolled her eyes. Her best friend was merciless with her words, pouring salt into Lucia's wounds.
After Susan's makeover, Lucia turned from an office lady into a sexy kitten. Her open collar hinted at her bosom, and her long hair tumbled down her shoulders like a waterfall.
She didn't have heavy makeup, but she gave off an effortless sexiness!
