Didn't Lucia marry me for money?
Or did she want to get even more money?
Without hesitation, he chose to believe the latter. She must want even more money from him!
What a gold digger!
"I don't care why you choose to stay with me, but I hope you follow the conditions in the contract. Don't get any clever ideas. Also, watch yourself. Don't fall in love with me, and don't fantasize about me loving you either."
The cold words stabbed into the tenderest part of Lucia's heart. Her hand trembled as she held the pen. She gritted her teeth and finished her signature. A teardrop splashed onto the paper.
Her heart had already been taken—stolen by him.
"Don't worry. I won't love you." With her back to him, she stubbornly denied her love to protect her own dignity.
Then she threw down the pen, grabbed her copy of the contract, and ran upstairs. She just wanted to escape this suffocating room.
Mason stared at the tear stain on the paper. He felt at a loss. He should be satisfied with her answer, but for some reason, he was unhappy. Her answer only confirmed that she only married him for money.
"Dammit!"
Anger flashed past his dark eyes.
Was it because his dad was too old, or was Lucia too good of an actress? She actually got his dad to want her as his daughter-in-law and use his own illness to threaten Mason to marry Lucia.
His dad was 60 years old, but he was still naïve enough to think Mason would fall in love with Lucia like this. He really underestimated Mason's self-control!
He despised sneaky women!
He only agreed to marry her because her grandma had saved his dad's life before. His dad had just gotten heart surgery and had given him a one-year time limit.
Otherwise, he wouldn't allow himself to be controlled like this!
Afternoon
Lucia was going crazy with boredom.
Even though it was a secret wedding, she still placed importance on it and took a few days off from work. She'd dreamed that Mason would bring her on a small honeymoon or something.
The reality was a whole different story!
If she'd known, she wouldn't have taken days off. At least she wouldn't be so bored right now.
Beep! Beep!
Her phone vibrated on the table. Reaching over, she checked the notification. Her eyes widened in shock the next second.
It was a text from her bank. She'd just received one million dollars.
After a few seconds, she finally realized that this was from Mason. It seemed that he was quite efficient. She'd signed the contract in the morning, and her living allowance had already arrived.
She didn't know whether to laugh or to cry as she looked at the long string of numbers.
After closing the message, she thought about calling Mason and asking if he'd be back for dinner, but she realized she didn't even have his number.
Lucia sighed. She decided to go grocery shopping and cook dinner for him.
But after she finished cooking, she waited from six to 10 PM, and he still didn't come back.
She sat at the dining table, watching as the steaming food slowly cooled down.
Her heart chilled bit by bit too.
She once had beautiful dreams about marriage.
But in two short days, Mason shattered it all!
Lucia took a few bites of the cold food. Then she tossed the leftovers and returned to her room.
She didn't know when Mason came back that night. At least, when she woke up around one AM, his car still wasn't there.
She finally met him the next morning.
"I need to talk to you," she called out, stopping Mason, who was about to leave.
Mason glanced at his watch in annoyance. "Two minutes."
The obvious disgust squeezed Lucia's heart.
She looked up, bravely meeting his eyes, and said, "Since we're going to be married for a year, you have to give me your number, right?"
Mason's eyes turned cold. Did this woman really plan on staying with him for a full year?
Great!
He would make her regret this decision!
"There's a job fair at the company this afternoon. My dad wants you to apply." His monotonous voice demanded her obedience.
Timothy indeed suggested having Lucia work at the Reynolds Group so she could integrate into his life. Mason planned on taking advantage of this to torment her in the workplace!
Lucia was taken aback. She didn't expect this sudden change of topic, but it had always been her dream to work with Mason.
She still remembered how she peaked at him from outside the company building. At that time, she envied the people who worked there and hoped she could be like that one day.
She nodded without hesitation. "Sure."
Mason turned to leave.
"Wait," she called. "I want to visit my grandma tomorrow. Can you come with me?"
Mason looked back at her and smirked. "I don't like you, but acting in front of our family is okay."
Didn't like her?
This asshole just had to keep reminding her!
Lucia rolled her eyes and went back to her room. Before she could get far, she realized she still hadn't gotten Mason's number, so she rushed back out.
"Mason, wait! You didn't give me your number!"
Mason was in the process of getting into his car. He didn't show any sign of stopping when Lucia ran over. Instead, he got in, closed the door, and drove off.
Lucia gaped at the car leaving the garden, and she waved a fist in the air. "I'll never ask for your number again!" she yelled.
She stomped back to the house.
Ring! Ring!
Her phone suddenly rang. She was still feeling pissed and picked up without looking at the number.
"I don't care who you are, what you want, you better hurry up and speak!" she yelled at the other person. "I just got pissed off by a stupid pig!"
The other end was Mason. He frowned, his handsome features twisting.
This damn woman called him a stupid pig?!
This was the biggest insult in his life!
"Lucia, do you want to die?!" he gritted out.
"Huh?"
It was Lucia's turn to frown. She hurriedly glanced at the caller ID and realized it was a familiar number.
It was Mason!
He knew her number!
All the stormy clouds in Lucia's heart cleared. She was overjoyed!
"Ha…" She chuckled awkwardly and explained, "It's not about you. It's someone else, trust me."
Trust her?
Mason wasn't stupid. No way he would believe her!
