When Smitty came to her table, their usual playfulness had been replaced by deliberate movements and nervous stiffness. Lynn ordered coffee, scrambled eggs and bacon, and Smitty disappeared with the order. Lynn took several deep breaths and told herself to relax. It had all started now and however it came out, there was no turning back. Smitty returned to the table with coffee, while Lynn pretended she could muster the concentration necessary to read a newspaper. She stared at the same page for several minutes, absorbing nothing, while she used her peripheral vision to observe any movement through the window of the restaurant.
