Chapter 1
Elena's Pov I squinted my eyes open as a bright bulb shone above me. Trying to shield my eyes, I noticed my arms were tied firm with chains, and my legs immobilised. Flustered, I saw my father, Beta Jacob standing with a large syringe filled with wolfsbane in his hands. “Why do you keep doing this?” I muttered, my voice trembling with fear. He gritted his teeth, his eyes void of emotions and pressed my arms hard against the bed, “Keep your mouth shut. Let's get this over with.” “Please, please stop… it hurts so much,” I cried, trying to yank my hands off him but it was of no use. His grip was too strong for me. Immediately, he injected it, and a searing pain shot through me, making me shake uncontrollably. I threw my head back as I screamed at the top of my voice, trying to break free from the shackles. “I don't want you and your shitty wolf destroying all I've worked hard for. And trust me, I'll keep doing this until you become as useless as a frail human,” He said in a menacing tone. He undid his hand gloves, tossing them in a trash can, and said, “Untie her when it's over,” slamming the door hard behind him. My body fidgeted with pain as I watched him leave, and all I could think of was how heartless he had been since he adopted me. He took me in when my parents died, with the urge to help me, but instead, he gave me a life worse than death itself. I watched them leave afterwards, and my head banged incessantly like it was tearing apart. I had to close my eyes and resort to the emptiness lingering in my heart because I knew I'd fall asleep and then everything would be over. A few hours passed, and my eyes battered open, but this time, I found myself lying sweaty in my room. My mind reeled with events from last night. I stayed in the floor chambers along with the maids, and just like the rest I had a lot of cleaning to do. My father had gone to a meeting with the Alpha, while Laura, my stepsister and best friend, as she would call me, still had a long day at college, leaving the mansion empty with maids. After the day's work, I slumped in my window frame, watching the birds chirp in a soothing melody. The sun's rays, which slipped down the trees, danced on my rough skin as the wind blew past it. However, that moment was short-lived when I heard a loud bang on my door. “Hey Elena! It's me, Laura. Open up!” she said, drumming her fists hard against the door. “Fine, I'm coming,” I replied, packing my hair into a bun, before walking sheepishly to the door. She was always excited whenever she met her Romeo in school; I wonder what happened this time. She walked in with her eyebrows furrowed, her eyes scrutinising me. “You look so pale, Elena,” She said, dropping a box on my bed. “I'm so sorry about last night. When I heard your voice… I couldn't even imagine what you were going through.” I forced a smile. This wasn't the first time it happened, and it was already a routine reminding me of my place in this house. “I'll be fine, Laura. Now tell me, what brings you here?” I asked lazily, “Did Romeo give you a kiss?” “Even better,” She squealed, clapping her hands excitedly, “Kyle's going to announce our engagement to my Dad tomorrow. Not only that, he invited me over to his private club, and I want you to come with me.” “But…” I protested, scratching the back of my neck. “No buts! I even got you one of my favourite dresses and a pair of heels. You're coming with me and I'm not asking,” She said, holding my shoulders firm. I couldn't believe how quickly she changed from being empathetic to something else, more of a one-sided bestie. At least I'll get to leave this suffocating mansion, “Sigh! Fine, I'll go with you,” I retreated, my hands in the air. In a fleeting moment, she sprang out of the bed and said, “Meet me in the garage by 8 pm and remember… don't tell Dad.” With that, she ran off, closing the door behind her. Soon after, we got to the club and I couldn't hide the rush and excitement whirling inside me. My eyes were wide open, taking in the breathtaking views and fascinating people. This was my first time outside the mansion in years. “Earth to Elena, what are you staring at? We don't have all day here,” She yelled, her voice laced with the loud music and rumbling from the crowd. I jumped out of my train of thought, feeling lost and stupefied by everything I saw. Fighting the urge to feed my eyes, I asked, my voice louder than usual, “So where's he and why come here of all places? There's just so much going on here.” She furrowed her eyebrows, looking around for him, and said, “He's supposed to be here waiting for us, not the other way around.” She placed her hand on my shoulder, “Just wait here, Lena. I'll go check the VIP section if he's there. Just make some new friends, okay,” she nudged my arm before disappearing into the crowd. I leaned by the bar counter, closing my eyes as I slowly guided my hips to the flow of the music. The air, which reeked of cigarettes and whisky, grew fainter, and all I could inhale was a sweet, intoxicating scent. I opened my eyes slowly to a tall, domineering figure, standing before me. His facial features were sharp and imposing danger, only softened by the flashing lights from the disco ball. “Mate!” A low growl escaped his thin lips, sending an oppressive chill down my spine, and I stood, frozen at a spot. My senses returned as I heard Laura's voice calling from the crowd. She had a tired expression on her face, “Lena, I couldn't find him, I've searched everywhere for… Kyle… you're here.”
