Chapter 2

Kyle's Pov

As I sat at the edge of the bed, I couldn't shake the feeling that my life was about to change forever. This wasn't the life I imagined, and neither was she the wolf I wanted.

“Why did it have to be Elena? Of all wolves in the pack, why did I have to be mated to Laura's stepsister?” I asked, my voice dripping with disdain.

Annabel, my six-year-old sister, with blonde hair, sat on the other side of the bed, listening intently. She mumbled, “If I was the moon goddess, I would have done the same thing too. I don't like Aunt Laura either.”

I raised an eyebrow, intrigued.“Ah, do you mind telling me why?”

“She doesn't always smile at me,” She said, her voice barely above a whisper. “And I caught her saying some bad things about you to…” She trailed off, her eyes darting towards the door as footsteps approached.

I placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder, “You don't have to be scared, Ann. Big brother Kyle is here to protect you. And besides, I won't say a word to her… I promise, okay?”

But she remained silent, her eyes fixed on the door. “It's not you I'm scared of… it's her,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “I don't know how, but I feel she hears everything I say. The last time I told Dad, Mom scolded me for no reason, and Dad also promised.”

“Can we continue with my homework now?” She turned the book towards me, her eyes pleading.

I forced a smile, trying to reassure her, “Alright, let's continue.”

However, my mind raced with questions. What was Annabel hiding? And what does Laura have to do with it?

Before I could ponder further, the door swung open, and my father, Alpha Thane strode in, his presence commanding attention. He wore a crisp, black suit, and just like Annabel, he wasn't excited about my engagement with Laura.

Annabel's eyes lit up and she squealed, “Daddy!!!” as she ran towards him. He lifted her into a tight hug and kissed her.

And her next words shocked me, “Kyle has found his mate, Dad!”

He quickly placed her down gently, his eyes gleaming, “Really son? That's great news!” He shouted, erupting with profound joy, “One step for curses, a thousand steps for werewolves. Let's get ready to announce your engagement with her.”

His words hit me like a punch to the guts. I couldn't let go of Laura and all I shared with her just because I found my mate.

I stood tall, my gaze unwavering, “No, Dad! I'm sorry but I don't want to marry her.”

He growled, “What? No, son, we've been waiting for this moment for years, and you know how important your mate is to you and our pack. You have to marry her.”

“No, I won't!” I said, my voice rising. “I won't marry any other wolf except Laura. And I don't care about you… or the pack.” my chest heaving with anger. I wouldn't let him put the pack before my needs again, not this time, not ever.

His eyes flashed amber, his wolf simmering just below the surface. It never entertained being opposed.

He took menacing steps towards me and growled, “You dare not raise your voice to me, Kyle! You'll do as you're told, and the earlier you realise it's for your own good, the better.”

With that, He turned to Annabella who hid behind her bed as everything unfolded, “Come with me, baby. Let's get away from here.”

The ride to the Blackwood's Mansion was cold and silent. I spoke to my mom about it, and she was more willing to listen than my Dad. She even tried talking to him on my behalf, but his mind was already made up.

Beta Jacob and Laura stood at the entrance, patiently waiting for our arrival. As soon as we walked up to them, they bowed and he said, “Alpha Thane, it's been a while since you reached this side of the pack. To what do I owe this visit?”

I looked over to Laura, as she waved her hands towards me with a broad smile. “Hi Kyle,” she said, taking gentle strides towards me.

“Hi,” I beamed, trying to hide the fact that a disaster was about to occur. “Shall we?” I asked, guiding her into the mansion with others.

We were all seated and my Dad began to speak. However, my eyes darted around for Elena, but I couldn't find her. Could it be that she knew about the incoming chaos and fled? I brushed it off, shifting my gaze to Laura.

She wore an off-shoulder gown that hugged her curves perfectly, exposing her cleavage just for me and me alone.

Soon after, Dad began the engagement announcement, and my palms grew sweaty with anticipation, even if I knew what he had in mind to say.

However, what happened next left me speechless. Elena, walked in with a tray full of snacks and sweets, while dressed like a maid who was barely fed.

My wolf, c*****e, growled with the urge to kill everyone as he saw how poorly his mate was being treated.

Regardless, my dad continued, unaware of how she looked, “With that being said, my son and future Alpha, Kyle Holden, would love to make your daughter…” Laura's eyes gleamed, and Beta Jacob was eager to hear it.

But Alpha Thane paused, his eyes scanning around. “Where's she?” He asked, and everyone frowned, puzzled.

Laura was hesitant but she answered, “I'm over here, Alpha,” standing up for him to notice her, even if he already had.

“I know that,” he shot at her, “I meant Kyle's mate, Elena!” he said, and everyone's jaw fell to the ground.

“What?” Elena muttered, lost in her own space.

“What?” Laura asked, her eyes welling with tears. “How did Elena…? What's going on?” She asked again, turning to Elena, bewildered.

Beta Jacob sprang to his feet, his forehead creased with lines. “Alpha Thane, I feel there's been a misunderstanding somewhere. Elena is just a…” He began, but Alpha Thane cut him off.

“No, there isn't Jacob. Elena has been chosen by the moon goddess for my son. She will be my son's wife and the next Luna of the pack.” He growled, balling his fingers into fists, “I will inform you all of the engagement date, the same goes for their wedding.”

Suddenly, Laura grabbed a table knife, placing it firmly against her wrist, “I'm not going to sit here and watch you all throw my life and future out the window, just because of a silly mate bond.”

“Babe please stop!” I demanded, reaching for her but she drew her hands away.

“If I don't get engaged to Kyle, I don't think I'll live to see him get engaged to someone else!” She yelled, sniffling hard.
