Chapter 3

Elena's Pov As I walked into the living room, my heart raced with uncertainty, Kyle's intoxicating scent of vanilla and sandalwood struck my nostrils, twisting my stomach into knots. My wolf, Chloe danced around, excited to see her mate. However, I forced her to the back of my mind, knowing I had a personal vendetta against the people seated before me. I brought in a tray of snacks and sweets, hoping they would eat to their satisfaction. The truth was that… I had poisoned them. I couldn't watch such vile people sit and enjoy in peace, while others suffered for their past mistakes and actions. Last night, I had to dig up information about Kyle and his family. Little did I know that fate had only brought me closer to my goals. His parents, the Holdens, were the ingrates responsible for my parents’ death and torture. My father, the previous Beta, was wrongly accused and punished. They called him a traitor and a spy— a man who served and dedicated his life to the growth and well-being of this same pack. Ever since then, I vowed to find the people responsible for their deaths and make them pay for the suffering they caused me and my family. As I approached them with the tray, my fingers grew sweaty and cold, but I took a deep breath and acted as normal as possible. However, Alpha Thane's sudden announcement of my engagement to Kyle sent a ripple of shock through me. “What?” I spat, the tray smacking loudly on the marble floor. I was left breathless by everything unfolding before me. Laura, feeling rejected, held a knife to her wrist, protesting, but Alpha Thane sat still, his expression unreadable. As the tension heated up, Luna Melissa, Kyle's mother, stood up, her face twisted into a scowl. “Look at the mess you're about to cause, Thane,” she shot back defensively. “You can't go around causing a ruckus just because of a sick prophecy,” My eyebrows furrowed in confusion. What did she mean by prophecy? And what did it have to do with me? A chill ran down my spine as I wondered about the implications. Alpha Thane stood up, his palm raised, silencing Luna Melissa. “Elena!” he growled, and I shuddered in fear, “Kyle will be your husband, and you will be the future Luna of this pack. No more objections from anyone.” I stood frozen, unable to snap away from his domineering gaze. My wolf, Chloe, whined in defence, her senses on high alert. Laura, whose hands were grabbed immediately by Kyle, broke into tears in defeat, her pain palpable. Beta Jacob heaved a long sigh and asked, “Alpha Thane, I understand your perspective on this. But do you mind telling us about this prophecy? You can't act harsh and still keep us in the dark.” I nodded quickly in agreement, eager to know more about the prophecy and Alpha Thane's plans. Marrying into such a vile family was the same as signing my death contract. I couldn't risk exposing my true identity. However, Alpha Thane remained silent, pushing his seat behind him. His eyes darted around the room for a while before locking onto mine, and then he beamed, “Welcome to the Holdens, Elena dear,” before taking majestic strides out of the mansion. Luna Melissa rushed after him, ranting about his poor decisions. But he turned a deaf ear, feeling satisfied with his decrees. Laura, on the other hand, charged towards me, her words dripping with venom, “You homewrecker! I never should have trusted you. I did all I could to make you feel loved but instead, you chose to be as heartless as your parents.” Kyle was dumbfounded as he held her. However, he couldn't control her outbursts as she spat venom down on me. ‘Why the hell did she think I wanted anything to do with Kyle?’ I cussed under my breath. “I swear, Laura, I never wanted any of this,” I protested, even if I knew she wouldn't believe me. “You're a liar!” she screamed, “you knew all this was going to happen, yet you didn't stop it. I'll make you pay, Elena. You deserve the same fate as your parents!” She said, grabbing a shard of glass. As she raised her hands in the air, she paused after hearing an indistinctive gasp. It was Annabel; she was sent to get Kyle, but upon seeing Laura angry, she was frightened and she ran out. Kyle suddenly pulled Laura from me, tossing her to the side. “Annabel, wait!” he shouted, but she kept going. “This madness needs to end now. Arguing wouldn't solve things neither would… the f*****g thing you were about to do, let's do this the right way.” Laura sneered, “Then tell her to get out of my family's life, Kyle. I don't want her near any of us.” her voice filled with disdain. Upon hearing that, Kyle pulled her tight into his frame. He tried consoling her while walking her out of the mansion. Meanwhile, I sat helpless with Beta Jacob's menacing gaze locked on me. He scoffed, picking a perfect wine glass from the shattered glass remnants on the table. “I knew that the regular wolfsbane sessions wouldn't be enough to hold you. I should have killed you a long time ago when I had the chance to,” He said, his tone spiteful. He filled the wine glass, gently swirling it before pouring the cold liquid over my head. I shuddered as it came in contact with my bare skin, letting out a soft gasp. He held my chin hard, raising my gaze to his, and snarled, “Your pleading eyes! A spitting resemblance of how your dad looked at me before he died.” I snapped my head out of his grip with disgust, and he scoffed, “He was a good man, but his good deeds led to his downfall.” “He didn't have to die, Jacob! You were the one who poisoned the Alpha's heart. You stood in the shadows while he fell into your dirty trap,” I yelled, my voice breaking. He drew closer with a malefic smirk plastered on his lips, “Hush now, Elena. You wouldn't want the Alpha finding out that the daughter of a traitor is still alive, would you?” I gritted my teeth, turning away. Only to find Kyle standing frozen on the spot as he looked at us. I didn't know how long he stood there, but his eyes were glaring with fury.
