Chapter 4

Kyle's Pov My heart sank as Annabel witnessed Laura's baneful act. I knew this would only elevate Annabel's fear for her, if not traumatising her. Frustrated, I took Laura into my arms, keeping her away from Elena. Not that I cared about Elena's safety but my wolf, c*****e, couldn't watch his mate being abused. He wanted to snap Laura into two equal halves, but I stopped him due to the love I had for her. “Kyle, please stop, just stop acting already,” Laura said, and I furrowed my eyebrows, “You could have stopped your Dad when he said it, but you sat there saying nothing. It felt like you wanted it all to happen.” How could I explain to her that I did try, but it almost got me killed? “Laura, please listen. I've… I'll talk to my Dad when he settles down, just give me more time.” I brushed my palm down my face, knowing that it was a lie. My dad had made up his mind, and no one, not even my mom, could change it. Ever since he ignored the shaman's advice and his previous Beta plotted an attack against him, he swore to take the prophecies seriously without question. Laura tightened her grip around me, tears hanging on her lashes. “But we don't have much time, Kyle.” She sobbed. “We need to get rid of Elena before she comes between us again.” “Wait, what?” I scoffed, "What are you talking about?” I asked, my eyes wide open in shock. Laura cupped my face with both hands, her eyes pleading. “You know what I mean, Kyle. Elena is trying to come between us. Can't you see?” She said, her voice laced with irritation, “She doesn't deserve to live, baby!” At that instant, my eyes glowed crimson red and a loud, dangerous growl escaped my lips, sending Laura forcefully to the ground. c*****e wasn't buying any of it. “Ahhh! I can't believe you, Kyle,” she yelled, leaning on one arm, “Look what she's doing to us. You literally pushed me.” “No, Laura. It's not what you think!” I called out, but she jerked her hands away from mine, her tears rushing down. “Just listen to me. If you can't reject her as your mate, then forget about having a future with me.” She shot back, walking away from me. My heart shattered once again, sending a searing pain through me. I tilted my head to the clouds, asking the moon goddess for strength as I stood, torn between love and pack duties. After I realized that my father had made up his mind, I decided to give in to it because I had my chances of being the next pack master at stake. I planned to go along with it, and when I achieved what I wanted, I'd reject Elena and marry Laura. But now, Laura's patience is running out, and I couldn't even tell her about it. ‘Go back to Elena!’ c*****e growled, simmering just below the surface. He wanted his mate but I wanted my life. However, I knew the earlier I accepted my fate with Elena, the better. Drained, I walked back into the mansion in search of Elena. Her rose and cherry scent struck my nostrils, calming me as it guided me to her. Upon reaching there, I saw Beta Jacob standing close to her with a scornful expression on his face. My eyes blazed with fury watching my mate covered in a mess. “What's going on here?” I demanded, my voice low and menacing. Beta Jacob stood up, wearing a malefic smirk on his face. “Just a little family discussion, Kyle.” He said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. My gut knew there was more to it, but I chose to ignore him walking over to Elena. “Go and get changed, we're leaving in a few minutes,” I said to her, ignoring the pleading look in her eyes. She stood up and left, and Beta Jacob's expression darkened. “Hmph! And where do you think you're taking her?” He asked, his eyes studying me. But I kept my face impassive, placing a firm grip on his shoulders. “Just a little engagement discussion,” I smirked, walking away from him. I could tell he was brimming with anger as he watched me leave, but he needed to get a taste of his own medicine. Meanwhile, Elena returned with an old-looking dress, and I looked at her, puzzled. I couldn't imagine her life living as a maid, and I guessed she had little to no clothes of her own. We got into my car, and I started the ignition, driving off. But she remained silent, an unreadable expression plastered on her face. Along the way I had to break the ice, setting the rules. I took a glance at her and said, “You should bury every thought you have about us being together. We might be mated, but my heart will always belong to Laura. ‘Lies!’ c*****e scorned, but I ignored him. She kept her gaze fixed on the road, and she said absentmindedly, “You don't have to worry, Kyle. I'm not really interested in guys like you.” I arched my eyebrows, not getting the response I expected. What does she mean by guys like me? Every shewolf I knew dreamt of having me all to themselves. I turned towards her, “I know you're just trying to play smart. Everyone loves me, and you should just accept the fact that you'll never get to have me.” I scoffed, feeling satisfied. “You do think highly of yourself, Kyle. I don't find you attractive either if that's what you're waiting to hear.” She shot back, looking at the tall buildings with a flicker of wonder in her eyes. I frowned, my eyes fixed on her side profile, “So tell me, what kind of guys do you like uh? Bad guys? Lycans? Say it?” She heaved a long sigh, her eyes meeting mine, “I suggest you keep your eyes on the road, please. I'd love to get to wherever we're heading in one piece,” she said lazily, retreating to her sightseeing. “Pfft!” I scoffed. If nothing else, she does have a loud mouth. ‘Hahaha!’ c*****e taunted, and I pushed him to the back of my mind, frustrated. We were headed to our manor to discuss with my dad about the engagement plans, but after our little chatter, I decided to show her how interesting of a guy I could be. I took her to a popular mall, however, that was a huge blunder. Media presenters and journalists were present for a brand opening ongoing live. But as soon as they spotted me, they flooded us, asking questions, especially the kind I hated to hear. As we smudged our way through them, camera shutters and bright flashes intensified. I shielded my eyes with one hand while holding Elena tight into an embrace with the other. And as if that wasn't enough, a heart-wrenching question was thrown at me by one of the reporters, “Mr Holden, being a man of high prestige, how would you react if Miss Laura finds out about your infidelity with an escort here in the city’s mall?
