Prologue
For years, Zach convinced himself she would never love him back—blind to the way her eyes lingered when he wasn’t looking.
As he taught himself to live with the ache of loving her alone, never noticing the way her hands trembled when he walked away,
the feeling of being rejected burned down his spine again, it had always haunted him but never thought that his one and only friend was the one to reject him.
He walked away acting fine, hiding and pushing back his own tears that wanted to fall while his heart, slowly breaking along with his shaking hands that was once holding hers.
The bell had rang, students rushed. The hallway was filled with excitement the students had felt as it was time to go home while Zachary's mind was just... Blank.
He clenched his jaw as he remembered what she said.
Zach looked back to her direction but the sight of her walking away in the middle of the hallway broke his heart.
"You're really cruel... "
He said before looking down.
As everyone continued walking, noises from the happy students, many had already left the school while Zack just froze in his spot.
"Something wrong?"
A girl asked from behind.
She looked at him with confusion and curiosity.
"Is there something bothering you?"
Though she already asked many questions, Zach did not seem to care.
His mind was still stuck in the time he was rejected.
"Y-you don't have to tell me... Uhmm, shouldn't you go home already? It's getting pretty late"
She said.
"Let's walk together"
She smiled, assuring Zach that everything will be fine though was clueless about what had happened.
She had always been like that. Nice, friendly, sweet but clueless. It was the words that best described her. While Zach, he had always been a loser.
Zach agreed and they both walk out of the school.
Zach was still out of it. He didn't know what to do, he felt like a mess.
"If I just didn't confess to her like a fool..."
He said to himself.
"Hmm?"
She asked him. Turns out, he had spoke loudly that the girl had heard him.
"Do you still like... Want some tutoring?"
She asked.
"If there's still something you want to clarify I can always help."
She smiled brightly to lighten the mood. It was a pretty awkward walk.
"I-I'm fine... But if I'm having a hard time, I won't hesitate and ask you for help."
He smiled though his eyes was still fulled with emptiness.
"The girl awhile ago... You like her?"
She suddenly asked that caught Zach off guard.
"W-what?... "
He was surprised by the question.
"She's really nice."
She said sincerely amused.
A sudden silence had hit the hallway.
"D-don't get me wrong, I mean you just looked happy with her!"
She defensively clarified.
"Yeah... "
He answered with a slight smile on his face.
"What?"
She asked.
"Nothing. I should get going now, we're not going to the same direction so I'll head first"
He said before leaving.
