Alina POV:
I had no clue how long I slept, but I noticed the sun was starting to rise.
When I left the mansion, it was around sunrise, and then I had spent at least a day or two on the road. So it must’ve been a new day.
I rubbed my eyes and yawned, then proceeded to groan as the seat gave me a crook in my neck. ”Hey, what time is it?” I asked in a morning croaky voice.
Lucas turned his head a little to look at me. “Oh! You’ve finally waken. I was wondering when you was gonna wake from your beauty sleep.” He said in a sarcastic tone.
”This was for sure not a beauty sleep. I hate everything about my nap. My neck hurts now because of your stupid seat.” I narrowed my eyes on him.
He shook his head and chuckled. “So you’re just going to blatantly blame my seat for giving you a crook? It was not my seat, you just slept wrong.”
I rolled my eyes. “I honestly don’t wanna sit here and argue about a damn seat. All I want to know is the day and time.” I said in a hardened tone.
”No need to get so cold with me. It is Saturday….” He looked at the unit dashboard where the time was displayed. “And the time is 5:57 A.M.”
”That’s all you had to stay the first time.” I said and grabbed my phone from where it was rested at in the car.
”You’re really gonna find something to argue about with me instead of just….thanking me?”
I rolled my eyes at him. “Haven’t I done that already? And you started it by commenting on something I didn’t decided to bring up.”
”If you say so.” He sighed and went back to putting his full attention on the road.
I also redirected my attention to my phone in hand and unlocked the screen. There were fifty missed phone calls from an unknown number, and almost ninety text messages.
It didn’t take me long to figure out who it might be, but I proceeded to check the messages.
The moment I opened it up, I closed it back. All the messages and missed phone calls were from only one person. And who might want to contact me so many time other than Tristan.
I sighed and decided to just cut my phone off for the time being. Besides, if I cut it off, then it’ll be way harder for him to find me.
”So….where is this Safe house located? If not California, then where are we exactly?” I decided to ask him.
He shrugged. “Well, we should be about two more hours away from the safe house, which is more like a cabin house. It is located in Manchester.”
“Okay, and where are we right now?” I asked him.
”We are in Vernon, Connecticut. You slept like a log for so many hours.”
Hearing our location had me frozen solid in utter shock. I’ve been so many places far from home, but goddamn I’ve never imaged to be in Connecticut with a somewhat- half stranger.
”And how are you not like….tired or ready to crash into a tree or something?” I couldn’t help but ask him this question.
Lucas let out a small laugh. “As long as I know there’s a pregnant woman beside me and depending on me to keep her safe, then I assure you that we’ll be fine enough to drive another two hours.”
I glared at him so hard the moment I heard him say I depended on him. “If I remember correctly, I didn’t depend on you. You just stated an offer that was probably too good to turn down, alright?”
He shook his head. “Whatever you want to say about this, say it. We’ll both know that you are kind of depending on me.”
I sighed and just gave up. “Whatever. I just want to lie down on an actual bed. My neck hurts like hell.” I groaned again.
He looked over at me and then back at the road. “Uh, we can take a break so you can like….stretch if you need to. Besides, I’m sure you’re extra hungry with the pregnancy cravings and extremely needing to pee or throw up or something.” He said in a rush.
I narrowed my eyes and then rolled them. “Actually, I somehow don’t feel any nausea or needing to use the restroom. I’m a little hungry….but thats it. And the only thing I really need like right now….is to get out of this car with you before you drive me to insanity with your annoying ass comments.” I said with so much annoyance.
”I didn’t peg myself to be the annoying type, but I guess others feel differently about me.” He shrugged.
”Just hurry up and get me to this house so I can care for myself properly.” I said and looked out the window at the passing street lights and trees in the distance. There was also a few homes a very good distance away. The sun rising made everything look beautiful, but I was nervous for what lay ahead for me.
*************
After an eternity of boredom, we finally made it up a hill where we saw a gorgeous cabin house.
But just as I found it utterly gorgeous, I found it annoying too. What was with people and all their big houses? When would I ever find just a normal person with a normal sized damn house. Money wasn’t everything. Well sure, to some people….but why everyone I encounter with has to be so…..luxurious? The more I started to see big and fancy homes, the more I less I found the beauty in them. More of, I started to get annoyed and irritated by the sight of them, and even started to loathe them.
”Ugh, are you serious? Do I really have to stay here?” I asked in a whining voice.
He looked at me weirdly. “Why are you reacting like this? I thought you’d be like….ecstatic or whatever.”
I rolled my eyes, in complete disbelief. “Money isn’t everything. Money doesn’t give every girl happiness. Yea, I admit that it’s pretty, but it’s so extra and unnecessary.”
He blew out a huge sigh. “Well thats a whole lot coming from a girl who spent months in a mansion with her bittersweet lover boy, including growing up in luxury.”
”Well, haven’t you gotten any sense? Maybe that’s exactly the reason why I’m so fed up with all this luxury. Its everywhere I look, everywhere I go! There’s always gonna be someone who will try to impress me or show off the amount of money they possessed. But what’s the point in the end. What point are you trying to make by it? If you thought that I’d be impressed or happy because you had a lot of money, then you are sadly mistaken. What an asshole….” I huffed, breathless after speaking for so long.
He was completely taken aback and looking for words to say to me, but couldn’t find any. Just before he tried to say at least something, I held up my hand and stopped him.
”Since I have no other choice but to stay here for the time being, can we skip the I’m sorries that I know you’ll be trying to say to me? I need relief and can’t find any around you.” I said with a little disgust.
‘This was the right way to get yourself on my good side….oops my mistake. Correction, my bad side.‘ I thought with sarcasm.
“Yeah….sure.” He said and sighed out as he pulled up in the driveway and turned off the engine.
The moment he did so and unlocked the car doors, I immediately got out and slammed the door shut.
I walked to the trunk just as well as he did. He opened the trunk up and took out both my suitcases.
He then handed me something from his hand, I didn’t bother to look since I was having a moment.
“You left your phone, the spare charger, and your purse in the car while you’re storming out of it. Can you just…forgive me for being ignorant or whatever?”
I glared at him and snatched the items from his hand. “Yeah….you’re forgiven or whatever.” I said with no genuine honesty.
”I might be slow or dumb about some things, but I can easily sniff out a lie. C’mon, give me a second chance.”
I furrowed my brows and looked at him weirdly. “A second chance for what? May I ask.”
He sighed and ran his hands through his hair. “There’s some places I’d like to show you, but I don’t see that happening if you’re so mad at me to where you don’t even wanna be in my presence.”
Folding my arms across my chest, I stood tall and looked at him with a blank expression on my face.
”What if I told you that despite whether I’m angry or not…I don’t even wanna go anywhere. Not with you or anyone else. And remember before you try anything, I am spoken for. I am completely off limits and only took this offer up to have a better life for both me and my baby.”
”I….I know that already, but just think about it okay?” Lucas asked me with a little hope.
To end the conversation, I just nodded. He didn’t seem convinced by my answer, so I nodded again. “I’ll think about it. But don’t go get you’re hopes high.” I added.
He sighed with a little relief and shut the trunk. “Also, not to intrude in any personal or private matters….but what did you mean when you said about giving you and your baby a better life?”
I was starting to get extremely nervous and irritated as the time passed by. I was not gonna answer that.
”Look, I appreciate this and all, but I’m not gonna just give a heart-to-heart with you.” I said and turned away, walking up the driveway.
He followed behind me with the suitcases after locking the car. Lucas stepped in front of me and opened the door after pressing buttons, which looked like a code or something.
He opened the door for me and I walked in, not bothering to take in anything or ask for a tour. I went straight for what looked like the living room.
It wasn’t as luxurious as I thought it’d be, but that was besides the point now.
Lucas went somewhere with the suitcases, most probably placing them in some room or whatever.
I stretch my body and relaxed on the couch, closing my eyes and letting myself feel relieved. I inhaled the vanilla mixed lavender smell in the home. I could also smell some wood close by, but it actually smelt good.
I wondered what Tristan would be doing at this very moment. Just thinking about him pained so much, so I decided to cut off my thoughts completely.
I got up from the couch, a little guilty of myself. Why should I be so comfortable and relieved here while he was probably hurting so much thinking I was in danger or something. It didn’t feel right.
My stomach rumbled like a thunderstorm, making me jolt a little. I called out Lucas’s name to get his attention wherever he was.
”Lu….” Before I could even finish his name, I felt someone turn me.
In front of me was Lucas and he grabbed my hand softly, leading me to somewhere.
The moment I came in contact with the kitchen area, I started to feel extremely famished.
“Hungry?” He asked me.
I rolled my eyes. “Can’t you ever be like, not stupid? Of course I am. You knew that already, anyways.” I said, but a little less annoyed since I was focused on eating.
”Well, I am gonna fix you the best breakfast you’ve ever had. You probably might be wondering how would I do that? Its a special recipe I’ve learned from my family and would love to share with you.” He said with genuine happiness.
I didn’t really want to go there with him for many different reasons. Firstly, I was hungry and had no time to wait for hours to receive my food. And secondly, someone cooking for me had brought back so many memories of I and Tristan. I couldn’t share those memories with anyone.
”No thanks, I’d rather eat like right now.” I said, not meaning to be rude, but he obviously didn’t understand and became disappointed instantly.
”I-uh….you know what? Never mind about that. I’ll just fix something quick.” He said, trying to hide the sadness but I saw it.
I didn’t want him to feel bad, despite him annoying me. I had feelings and was very compassionate about others. So I sighed and stopped him.
”You know what? Fine. You can fix it.” I said.
”Bu-but you said….” I stopped him.
”Yeah, I know what I said. I changed my mind. Fix it.” I assured him.
He sighed and after some long seconds, the smile appeared back on his face.
”Alright then, prepare to be amazed!”
But he got the wrong idea…..
