CHAPTER.1
The College Meeting
Rebecca clutched her coffee cup, savoring the warmth seeping into her fingers as she approached the small café where she was supposed to meet Nyra.
She spotted her best friend sitting at an outdoor table, her black curls bouncing as she waved energetically. A wide smile spread across Rebecca’s face as she walked faster. Nyra had that infectious energy, a kind of charm that made her impossible to ignore, and it had been weeks since they'd last seen each other. Between classes, work, and endless assignments, life had been hectic, and Rebecca couldn’t wait to catch up.
"Becca!" Nyra called, standing up to give her a tight hug. "It’s been too long!"
"I know! Way too long," Rebecca said, hugging her back. "You look amazing, by the way."
Nyra grinned, twirling a little for effect. "I will try." She winked, then gestured to the seat across from her. "Come on, sit down! I already ordered drinks for us drinks."
Rebecca slid into the chair, feeling a little lighter already. There was something comforting about Nyra’s presence, like everything was simpler when they were together.
"So, tell me everything," Nyra began, leaning forward with her usual intensity. "How's school? Work? Love life? Spill it all."
Rebecca laughed softly, shaking her head. "There’s really not much to tell. School's the same crazy as always. Work is fine, though I think my boss is starting to forget I’m just a student intern, not a miracle worker." She took a sip of her coffee. "And as for the love life... non-existent, as usual."
Nyra gasped dramatically. "Becca, that is unacceptable! You need to get out there! You’re way too gorgeous to be single forever."
Rebecca rolled her eyes but smiled. "I'm fine, really. I’m just focusing on other things right now. Besides, I haven’t met anyone that’s, you know… sparked my interest."
Nyra clicked her tongue. "Well, that’s going to change today."
Rebecca raised an eyebrow. "Oh really?"
Nyra smirked, leaning back in her chair. "Yup. I’ve got someone I want you to meet." She glanced toward the entrance of the café, and Rebecca followed her gaze.
A tall figure approached them, his dark hair tousled by the wind, his hands casually tucked into his jacket pockets. He had an easy stride, like someone who was comfortable in his own skin, and his eyes scanned the crowd until they landed on Nyra, lighting up with recognition.
"Speak of the devil," Nyra said, her voice full of excitement. "Becca, this is Anthony."
Anthony smiled as he reached their table, and for a moment, Rebecca felt her breath catch in her throat. There was something about him, his smile, the way his eyes crinkled at the corners, the way he carried himself that made her pulse quicken. She quickly pushed the thought aside. This was Nyra's boyfriend. She couldn’t think like that.
"Hi," Anthony said, his voice warm as he extended his hand. "Nice to meet you, Rebecca. Nyra’s told me a lot about you."
Rebecca shook his hand, her skin tingling at the contact. "Nice to meet you too, Anthony. Nyra’s told me about you as well."
Anthony took a seat beside Nyra, his arm casually draped over the back of her chair. As the three of them began to chat, Rebecca found herself drawn to him. He was funny, smart, and had this effortless charm that made it easy to see why Nyra had fallen for him. But as much as she tried to stay focused on the conversation, Rebecca couldn’t ignore the strange fluttering in her chest every time Anthony spoke. It was unsettling, and she hated herself for it.
This was Nyra’s boyfriend. Her best friend’s boyfriend.
She glanced at Nyra, who was laughing at something Anthony had said, completely at ease. The guilt gnawed at Rebecca, but the feeling in her chest wouldn’t go away.
As the conversation flowed, Rebecca found herself lost in thought, her mind drifting back to moments when she'd felt a connection to someone but had always brushed it aside, convinced it wasn’t real or worth pursuing. But this... this was different. The intensity of it scared her. She had never felt such an instant pull toward someone before, and the fact that it was Anthony made it all the more complicated.
"Becca?" Nyra’s voice cut through her thoughts.
Rebecca blinked, realizing both Nyra and Anthony were looking at her. "Sorry, what?"
Nyra laughed. "I was just saying, we should all hang out more often. You and Anthony seem to get along great."
Rebecca forced a smile. "Yeah, that sounds fun."
As they continued talking, Rebecca tried to push her feelings down, to bury them beneath layers of logic and loyalty to Nyra. But the more she tried, the harder it became. She could feel this invisible thread connecting her to Anthony, pulling tighter with each passing minute.
After a while, Anthony excused himself to take a call, leaving Rebecca and Nyra alone again. As soon as he was out of earshot, Nyra leaned in, a mischievous glint in her eyes.
"So, what do you think of him?"
Rebecca hesitated, choosing her words carefully. "He seems great, Nyra. You guys make a cute couple."
Nyra smiled, her eyes softening. "I really like him, Becca. He’s different from the other guys I’ve dated, you know? He’s… special."
Rebecca’s stomach twisted. Of course, he was special. Nyra deserve someone amazing, and Anthony seemed to fit the bill perfectly. So why did it hurt to hear her say it?
"I’m glad you found someone like him," Rebecca said, meaning it, even though it felt like the words were scraping her insides.
Nyra gave her a playful nudge. "You’ll find someone too. I just know it."
Rebecca managed a weak smile, but her mind was elsewhere. What if she already had? And what if that someone was completely off-limits?
When Anthony returned, the mood seemed lighter, the conversation drifting into more casual territory. But beneath the surface, Rebecca’s emotions churned, a storm she wasn’t prepared to face.
As the afternoon wore on, they eventually decided to wrap up their meeting. Nyra stood up first, stretching her arms above her head. "We should definitely do this again soon," she said, giving Rebecca another hug. "I’ve missed our hangouts."
"Same," Rebecca replied, hugging her back.
Anthony smiled at her, his gaze lingering just a second longer than it should have. "It was nice meeting you, Rebecca. Hope we can all get together again soon."
"Yeah, definitely," Rebecca said, her voice a little too high-pitched as she avoided his eyes.
As they walked in opposite directions, Rebecca couldn’t shake the feeling that something had shifted between her and Anthony. Something that, if left unchecked, could spiral into something more.
She was lost in thought, replaying their conversation, when she felt her phone buzz in her pocket. She pulled it out, expecting a message from Nyra, but her heart skipped a beat when she saw it was from an unknown number.
“Hey, it’s Anthony. I know this is kind of weird, but… would you want to grab coffee sometime? Just us. Don’t worry, I won’t tell Nyra. It’ll be our little secret.”
Rebecca froze, her breath catching in her throat. She stared at the screen, her mind racing. What was happening? This couldn’t be real. Nyra’s boyfriend had just asked her out, and he was asking her to keep it a secret.
Her heart pounded in her chest as she reread the message. It would be so easy to say yes, to give in to the undeniable chemistry between them. But she couldn’t. Could she?
Torn between loyalty to her best friend and the thrilling pull of something forbidden, Rebecca stood
Frozen in place, her thumb hovering over the keyboard, her mind clouded with indecision.
