"Keila..."
"What is it now?"
Keila took an empty paper cup and pressed the button with the Cappuccino label on it to pour some coffee. She put down the hot coffee on the table and looked at Dale with questioning eyes, giving him the signal to answer her question as she waited for the steaming hotness of the coffee to subside.
"I know that I wronged you—"
"Everyone knows about that, Dale. Only you and your lascivious woman don't." She clicked her tongue and touched the side of the cup to check its temperature. "If you're here to apologize, forget it. I am not interested into half hearted apologies and —"
"We broke up!"
Keila stared at Dale suspiciously. Of course she's surprised but she's not buying it because there is no clear reason for the two of them to break up.
"What did you say?"
"We broke up," Dale repeated. "I found out that there is no child and she's just pretending all along to gain my affection."
Dale looked at Keila and tried to touch her but Keila slapped his hand before it landed on any part of her body that made the ex-boyfriend hang his head low.
"So what? You broke up and then what? Are you implying that after sleeping around with a different woman, I should run to you and wrap you in kisses because it's nothing but a false claim? Is it that easy, Dale?," she scoffed at him.
"No — of course not! Keila, listen, everything is—"
Keila slammed her hand on the table that made a loud bang. Her coffee rippled from the shock but that's the least of her care for now because some bastard thinks that he's a hot shot just because some stupid girl dared to lie to people in order to what? Gain his affection? How golden is that affection? So banal!
"Excuse me, Mr. Ramirez but talking about relationships inside the workplace is destroying my mental focus needed for the job. If it doesn't bother you, will you please shut your mouth and get your ugly face out of my sight cause it's dealing psychological damage to me. Could you?"
She agreed to talk with him not because she's expecting him to say this nonsense that has been sprouting from his mouth since earlier. All she want is to hear a single word of sincere apology and she'll let everything pass like history that's needed to be buried in ruins.
"But Keila, this means that we can go back to how we were before."
"No one's going back to a jerk like you, Mr. Ramirez. If you're done, then I'll go now." She picked her coffee and looked back at Dale again. "And don't try to touch me nor grab my hand, saying 'I'll explain' or 'Listen to me" because obviously, I won't listen. And look," she raised the cup and let him see the still hot coffee there. "My hand will slip not accidentally if you do. I promise, it won't be a good sight."
Dale moved a few steps back and raised his hand in defeat, afraid that the still hot coffee would stain his clothes and cause burns in his skin. "I want you to know that I am sorry, Kei. I really am and I hope that we can still save our relationship 'cause there's no one for me except you."
Keila grimaced at the overused phrase Dale used to her. What a jerk! Even his quotes and lines are standard with no originality. She left him there standing and went back to her table to enjoy her coffee while doing her job.
"Kei!," Heidi Williams called to her. She's beaming with positive energy and all smiles as she approaches. She has been her friend since she joined the company but her multiple successful projects and wit gave her a promotion and regular contract. "Are things doing fine?"
Keila nodded and squeezed Heidi's palm lightly. "Of course."
"Great! Then how about this, let's commemorate your end of contract with a few bottles of beer and some roasted meat?"
"Sure!," she agreed so readily.
"You said it okay. I'll wait for you in the parking lot later. "
Keila winked at her longtime friend and finished her ongoing task. After three more hours of keeping her back straight while sitting still on her desk, Keila stretched her arms and looked at the clock. She's 7 minutes past her out time.
"Kei, here!"
Heidi was already waiting for her when she reached the parking lot. She's waving from beside her car and ready to waste her night with hard drinks.
However things turned out not good for her when they reached their usual barbecue store. They're just about to get started when she suddenly feels a turmoil inside her after she ate the first slice of bacon she fondly prepared.
"You alright?"
Heidi's concerned eyes and worried expression made her feel a little at ease but the feeling of wanting to barf is still there so she immediately ran into the restroom and released the growing tension in her mouth.
"Keila Forger, are you pregnant?" Heidi asked behind her after following her to the restroom.
"What?!" She looked at Heidi while wiping the edge of her mouth. There's no way for her to get pregnant because she's always diligent on taking her pills.
"Don't give me that confused expression. You're having s*x with Dale right? It's just a month since the two of you broke up. It won't surprise me if you got pregnant before you two had separated ways."
That's not the problem! If it is one month then there's also her boss, Aiden Castellan, and some unknown man to worry about. It's not just that jerk, Dale.
She sighed and washed her mouth with the water from the faucet and wiped the moist with her handkerchief.
"I'm not pregnant, okay?"
--------
That's how it should be. That's what she thought.
But what is this?
Two red lines indicating the formation of new life inside her are showing on the test window of the pregnancy test kit they bought on their way home. She bit her lower lip and smiled at the troublesome situation she dragged herself in.
"Sh*t, I messed up."
