Natalie's POV
"What do you mean? We should go on vacation? What about work?" Liz asked me for the umpteenth time. She looked confused at my sudden request.
I had suggested to her that we apply for leave and go on vacation for a few weeks, but it surprised her, which I understand.
Applying for leave without notice seems impossible. But that was the only option I could think of.
Staying in Liz's house might not be the best solution for me. I can't shake off the feeling that he might locate me.
His last words before he left my house kept ringing in my head like an alarm, and that smug smile he gave me. Gosh, It still gave me chills.
The best thing for me is to leave the city for a little while.
"Work can be done later." I persuaded her, but Liz still stared at me like I was saying gibberish.
"You can go on the vacation yourself." She said before taking her phone, ignoring me, but I begged. "Please, Liz. This is a matter of life and death." I was scared, but maybe I shouldn't have added the last part to it.
She dropped her phone and looked at me. "What do you mean by that? What happened? Is someone threatening you? Is it your uncle again?" She asked many questions before I could even reply to one.
Liz is more than my best friend. Did I remember to say we've been friends for over a decade? She knows everything about me. My family and all I've been through. It hurts me not being able to tell her what was going on, but I don't have a choice. I can't possibly say I saw a vampire. No one would believe me.
"No. It's nothing. I didn't mean it like that. I just thought you would agree if I said that." I said to her. She stared at me before I suddenly felt a pain in my arm. She hit me.
You scared me for a second." She said, which made me laugh.
We both watched a movie after the discussion, but still, I wasn't ready to give up. Liz might not be interested, but I am. First thing on Monday, I plan to apply for a leave at the office and leave the city for a few weeks. At least to sort out the thoughts in my head.
***
The weekend went by so fast. It was finally Monday. The day I've been waiting for. I got prepared for work from Liz's house. Her place was far from my workplace, but I was less bothered by that.
I walked into the building, past two employees moving carts filled with files. Some also rushed past me to catch the elevator.
My office was on the third floor, and even though a lot of employees on my floor took the elevator because it was faster and easier, I didn't. It's something that has been a part of me for years. I will always take the stairs, no matter how faraway the floor can be.
I took the stairs and got to my floor. "Good morning," I said to the staff already sitting in their cubicle, to which they also replied to me. "Good morning."
I dropped my bag on the table and was about to sit when my coworker, Rhoda, sitting opposite me, said to me. "You should go to the HR department. You're being requested to come immediately when you get to work."
"The HR?" I asked to be sure I heard her correctly. I was planning to go to the HR department probably after work to ask for a leave, but hearing I was requested there surprised me.
"Thank you," I said to her.
I left for the HR department immediately. I took the stairs to the fifth floor and walked toward a lady standing behind a counter.
"Good morning. I'm Natalie Ross from the sales department. I was asked to be here by... I couldn't finish my words when the woman cut in. "Yes. The CEO has been waiting for you."
I looked at the woman like I didn't hear her. The CEO was waiting for me. Why? This was the question I had no answer to.
I nodded and followed her towards the CEO's office, my legs and hands trembling. I was just asked to the CEO's office without any reason. I've never been to his office or exchanged words with him. Any complaints in my department were to be reported to the head of the department, who would tend it to the CEO himself.
We got to the CEO's office, and we were asked to enter by his secretary, standing behind a counter. The woman opened the door, and we both entered.
"Ms. Ross is here, sir." She said only for the man in his late forties, sitting on a chair, looking at his computer, looked up at us.
Immediately, he stood up and smiled at us, or maybe me. "You're Miss Ross. Please sit down." He pointed to a seat opposite him, to which I also sat, despite having a series of emotions. Surprise, confused, and fear.
"Thank you," I said.
"You must be wondering why I called you." He started. "People like you deserve to be treated right." He smiled at him, which only got me more curious.
"You've been transferred to work in the Eclipse corporation."
I blinked my eyes several times, unable to believe what I had just heard. "Eclipse Corporation?" I asked to reconfirm. I've heard a lot about the company. They're one of the biggest companies in the country. Even the skyscraper building is massive. It's so hard to get a job, but I just got transferred there. Do companies even do employees' transfers?
I wanted to scream so loud, but not in front of my boss. And I'm still surprised. How come I got transferred to such a company?
"I don't know what to say, sir. How?" I asked, but the man just smiled. "Let's just say a reward for your work."
I stared at him. The reward for my work? It's not that I neglect my work or do a terrible job, but a lot more people deserve the reward than me.
He talked again before I could say anything. "You should report to the company tomorrow. You can pack up your things. Have a nice day, Miss Ross." He said to me before facing the woman standing behind me. "Finish all the paperwork."
I walked out of his office, still confused. I was planning to ask for a leave, and now I'm being transferred to Eclipse. I can't let go of the opportunity, but I'm still worried about the vampire guy.
I followed the woman to her office to sign some documents. I was to pack my things, leave the office, and report to Eclipse Corporation tomorrow morning.
I still haven't made a decision, or maybe I have. I packed my things from my cubicle. My coworkers watched me as I did; some even asked me what happened. Perhaps they thought I got fired. I left the company and went back to the home I've been avoiding.
"Gosh, do I want to do this? What if the guy comes back?" I thought as I stared at the corners of the room.
No. It's Eclipse. I can't let that guy ruin such a good chance.
I sighed as I sat on my couch.
