CHAPTER FORTY JUNE 28, 7:30 AM MCLAIN HOME It’s raining hard this morning when I get up. I turn the radio on and listen to the weather report of heavy flooding on the Phoenix and Scottsdale roads. I know that some of the roads are impassable when it rains. The hard desert ground does not absorb the fast, quick flow from heavy storms passing over. Streets become treacherous very quickly, and flash flooding occurs in some areas, stranding cars. Parts of Scottsdale’s downtown areas can even flood. The Safari Hotel in Scottsdale has flooded before. There are about 105,000 people that reside in the city of Phoenix and thousands more in surrounding communities such as Scottsdale, Mesa, Paradise Valley, and Carefree.
