Third person’s POV It was early in the evening and Axel had been training all afternoon. He had been at it for over four hours now and yet it did not feel like he had lost a single strength. Instead, it felt like there was something inside him pushing and demanding for him to intensify his effort; even his wolf Jax was restless and wanted out — so he decided to go for a run. Walking into the forest and shifting, he immediately took off and ran for over an hour before reducing his pace. Going straight to the waterfall, he decided to go for a swim — still in his wolf form. After a while, he stepped out and laid down by the water and had a flashback of everything the oracle said. Thinking about the evil she spoke about and wondering what it could be, he remembered her mentioning that the evil would be hidden right before him, and that he would need to look with his inner eyes. So, he ran back towards the palace and shifted to his human form; all the while wondering if there was a specific reason why the Moon Goddess chose to send a guardian wolf through him, as they were only sent when there was an enormous danger to her children. His mind went back to the dream he had the previous night; of a red-haired beauty with a white wolf crouched before her: her hair was the exact colour of his wolf and she was telling him to come sit and rule with her. He didn’t get it as he was already the Alpha of the largest pack and he was the one that should have offered her a seat next to him. When he stepped into his room, he decided to start packing as the urge to leave was getting to him and his wolf was restless, and he needed something to distract him. He thought he would have gone for a hunt, as it had been over a week since he had made a kill, and that always helped to calm Jax. Axel’s POV As I walked into the great hall, I greeted the monarchs. “Ah Axel, we were just about to send for you. Please follow us to our private living room. We have a lot to discuss.” The queen said. So, I made to follow when the King asked a guard to inform Prince Calum to join us. Looking around the familiar room, he remembered the first time he stepped his feet in here; how he had marvelled at the feminine luxury and wondered how the King survived in this space. The queen had jokingly told him not to worry about it, as the King had come to accept it — since that is what she wanted. He had looked at her, feeling mortified that she could read his thoughts, and he blurted that out. She smiled and told him she couldn’t read minds, but rather his face and a few others, including the Prince, had the same reaction when they first stepped into this room. Just as they were taking their seats, Calum walked in and the King waved him to a seat. “It’s been five years that you have been with us, and you have grown so much from the young Alpha you were, when you first joined us, to become the most feared Alpha that you are now.” I nodded to this statement as it was true. In my years of training at the palace, I had proved to be an Alpha no one wants to cross. The King continued to explain that the times to come were going to be extremely challenging, and that I would be tried on so many levels, but that I already had an advantage, as my mate had been found. Explaining that we both needed each other to unlock the magical powers within the both of us, he further said, “also you both will need to undergo a lot of training, that is why we have decided to allow not only the Prince go with you but also the oracle.” To say I was stunned wouldn’t have being enough to explain my emotions right now. The oracle was said to be second to only the Moon Goddess herself and has never left these lands all her life. Even some people that came to enquire of her were sent back without seeing her — if she sensed that the motive behind the enquiry was not noble. While I was still recovering from the shock, he went on talking. “The Prince here is also a watcher and a guardian wolf. He is still undergoing training with the oracle — just as you are, and we know one of the reasons the oracle still breathes is to perform the sacred right between the keepers.” He said. “You must keep the information about the prince a secret, as the forces of evil are waiting to identify the keepers and to take them out one after the other.” The queen said. “Being that you and your mate have already been identified, they will be watching and searching for the remaining two watchers. So, it is absolutely necessary to keep his identity hidden, at least for now, until his mate, who is going to be the fourth watcher, is found and his powers are fully unlocked.” At the mention of Calum being a guardian wolf like me, I turned to look at him, as so many thoughts ran through my mind. The one that found its way out of my mouth was, “how can he be seen as a Lycan?”. The queen, looking all serious, began to explain that before Calum was born, the oracle predicted he was going to be a watcher; that the Moon Goddess would do this, in order to hide him in plain sight, until the time came for him to be revealed, and then at age twelve he had shifted into a magnificent brown wolf which made his element earth. I looked at Calum again, as though seeing him for the first time and asked how all this could be true when I had seen him in his Lycan form severally; but never for once had he shifted to a wolf, and he surprised me yet again by saying he had both a wolf and a Lycan. “You are both intertwined in your assignment. That is why we accepted your request to train here,” the king said. After about an extra hour of discussion, we were done, and I excused myself and made a run for the forest — as Jax really needed to make a kill or rip someone apart. Talia’s POV I looked at the lovely green day dress I was holding and admired it for the thousandth time; it reminded me of the lush green of the forest. My thoughts drifted off to my walk in the forest early this morning; how I had begged the Goddess to please have a rethink about me, as I would love to have a meaningful life; even if she will not gift me with a wolf — she should at least grant me my mate, as I don’t want to become a chosen mate to (maybe) a wolf that had lost his original mate. Such cases happen, but the bond between a chosen mate could never be compared to that of a fated mate, as the wolves of chosen mates did not bond. So, it was a big deal to find one’s mate and, at my age, I was starting to lose what little hope I had left. Walking to one of the lakes in the forest, I went down on all fours and lapped up water with my tongue. Pretending it’s my wolf that was drinking; after which I sat down and looked at the calm water. I had always felt drawn by water almost as much as I loved fresh air. The truth was that it seemed as though there was something about the elements that always called out to me. Stretching my right hand, I stroked the surface of the lake and it felt like cool silky-smooth velvet. Looking around, I picked up a small stone and skipped it across the surface of the lake. Watching as it formed different patterns whenever it touched the water, and finally made a ripple as it sank into the lake. The call of a bird drew my attention to the sky, and I decided to go for a run even if it was a short one, knowing I might not be able to do so after today. Taking off in the direction that the bird flew, I ran as fast as my legs could carry me, and just as I was about to take a left turn, I heard a muffled sound and stopped abruptly, my heart panting. Thinking there might be rogues, I went down on my hands and knees; wanting to be certain of what I heard before running back to the pack to raise an alarm. Following the sound to a grove of trees, what I found made chills to run down my spine: it was Mark humping away on Lyann. Shock glued me to the spot where I was, and as I quietly tried to sneak back, I heard Mark ask, “After he dies, do we still need to hide?” “Of course. It won’t look nice of me if I were to openly have an affair with you.” Lyann replied. “Are you sure they will be able to get to him? The warriors of this pack are formidable, and he is very strong — almost as good as the alpha.” At the release of this statement, Lyann flung Mark off him; growling in anger, “do you take me for a fool pup? I have planned it all meticulously,” he continued speaking, “before leaving this morning, I made sure to spike his breakfast with just a little but the right amount of wolf’s bane, in order to weaken him and leave him vulnerable — when they are ambushed.” “So, he was the sole target of the ambush?” Mark asked, smiling. She nodded, and at that point, I knew I had to leave there or risk my life if found. Jolting back to reality as my mama called out to me, I quickly put on my dress and looked round my room; trying to hold in all the emotions I was feeling. As soon as I walked into the sitting room, my papa hugged me so tightly, and I jokingly told him I couldn’t resume my duty with broken ribs. I had gone straight to him when I came in that morning. I told my papa what I heard, and he had assured me that he would handle everything. I was looking at him right now; my eyes full of questions, and he knew what I was asking. As if to assure me, he said the people that went to fetch the future Luna would be here any minute now. I stepped out of the house and went straight to the Alpha’s office, where I met the other people I will be working with already there. The Luna for the umpteenth time proceeded to explain our roles again, and just as she was starting with the domestic staff, we heard the signal go off. Announcing the arrival of the party that went to fetch the future Luna, and we all went outside, following behind our Alpha and Luna. The Beta stepped down, making me release the breath I did not even know I was holding, and ordered one of the warriors to open the door for the future Luna. After Alpha Alex and Luna Abigail stepped forward, a living goddess came out as soon as the door was opened. She was so beautiful; the most exquisitely beautiful she-wolf I have ever laid my eyes on. Her red hair looked like flames of fire on her head, and her skin was flawless. She wore a gold color dress and beige heel sandals. Everyone was speechless until Luna Abigail stepped forward and wrapped her in a welcoming embrace. She was taken to the private quarters of the current Alpha and asked if she would like to freshen up before meeting the pack. She expressed that she would prefer to meet the pack right away, after which she could freshen up before the dinner that was being held in her honour. Heading to the packed ground, the Alpha gave a loud howl, summoning the pack. I am sure the howl could be heard even at the borders, and as his howl died down, the howls of his guards followed. Everyone started moving to the main entrance of the packed ground — as was the case whenever there was a summon. I picked up my pace, as I was supposed to be in the front, and wouldn’t want to offend the Alpha and Luna before I even started my duty. Making my way to the front, I found Nate standing next to his mate, alongside Ethane, Debbie, and her mate. He made to wave to me to join them, but I quickly turned away from him and my gaze fell on the Luna, who then beckoned on me to join her and the others. As soon as the Alpha raised his hands, the crowd went silent, and he began to address the crowd in his authoritative voice. “Today is a day for us to be thankful to the Moon Goddess, as she has seen it fit to bless this pack with two of her watchers.” An earth-shaking howl went up from all present. He continued to address everyone, emphasizing the need for everyone to treat her as they treat the current Luna, and most importantly, to protect her. “Now I present to you, your future Luna,” he said, ending his speech. At this point, not even the leaves on the trees stirred. She stepped forward, and all eyes were on her. “Hello everyone, my name is Eva. It is an honour to stand before you all. I am indeed from the dark moon pack, but today I am proud to be called a member of the full moon pack. I hope that you will all see me as one of you and not as an outsider, as I already feel at home here.” There was an eruption of clapping, cheering, and howling as she concluded her speech. After about half an hour of more talking from Alpha Alex and Luna Abigail, the crowd was dismissed, and that began my official duty.
