Chapter 8

After we set up everything and had our snacks, we decided to dive in the falls we saw nearby our camp.

And I saw how my friends are actually enjoying this which I don't expect. I thought it would be boring for them since as far as I know, I am the only nature lover in our team. And they are some kind of people who love to spend their free time going into some luxury resort or club.

Yeah, I am friends with them but we are not always together. And whenever we are at school before, we don't really talk to each other. Well, except me and Jelah who are inseparable since we got to know each other in our 2nd year college.

Though I am glad that they are enjoying this vacation and it looks like they are having so much fun as much as they can because we don't really know when our next vacation will start.

"Hey, Shira!" I looked at Maki who's swimming towards my direction. "I never expect this to be this fun."

"Well, you guys always think that everything fun is around people you don't even know." I said. "But the real fun is here. By yourself around people you trust."

He chuckled. "You find that fun because you are an introvert. You are born to love your own space away from people. Same like Ives. Jelah, Kris and I are kind of extroverted since we want to meet strangers that give us the attention we need."

"Well, I can't help it but hate meeting new people every day." Duh, most of the strangers I've met so far are all extroverts and I hate it because they always invade my personal space. And it is really irritating.

And thanks to Jelah, I don't really have to face them anymore because she was the one who was getting their attention which she actually liked.

"Ah, guys."

We turned to Frazer who just arrived at the falls where we are. He didn't join in our swimming because he's the one in charge of doing our lunch and since we don't have anything to help, he just told us to enjoy here while he is preparing our meal.

"I had a bad feeling about something." he said that made me frown.

"What do you mean?"

"While I was roaming the place, I saw this river 2 miles away from our camp." He showed me a map and pointed to the location of the river that he was talking about. "There are a lot of dead fish floating at the surface and it is forming a bubble above like it was boiling from the under."

"What the hell?" I immediately get out of the water. "Let's go there." As far as I know, those signs are surely not good and we need to get out of this mountain as soon as possible but still, I had to check it to make sure.

Ives, Jelah and Kris also got out of the water and Frazer lead the way to that river.

And when we arrived, Frazer was right. Something here is really not good.

"This river is going to explode." Jelah said while looking intently at the river.

Shit!

"There is probably a massive carbon dioxide at the bottom of the river and if it keeps rising, this whole river will explode and those CO₂ will scatter through the air and probably kill those who will inhale this." Kris added.

I didn't say anything. What they said is right if we are looking at the current situation that we are seeing right now. But something is still off and I can't figure it out.

I feel like it is not really that simple. But what could it be?

"It is not the CO₂." We turned to Ives who's holding his laptop. "There is a secret facility that has been built inside this mountain." He showed us his laptop. "This is now an abandoned place but some equipment is still in there."

"And the one that poisoned the fish and making the river boil is this one." He pressed one key on his laptop and the thing he is pointing at right now is a nuclear reactor that has been heating up and about to burst.

"We have to call the headquarters."

"What the hell do you mean we can't call the headquarters?" I asked Frazer.

"I can't reach the PYM as of this moment and most of the staff are also out for their own vacation so they may lessen the signal that they are using since they don't really expect that something big trouble like this will come up." he explained. "And I tried to contact any government agency to tell our situation here but they didn't take what I said. They think that I was just pranking them and they immediately drop my call."

"This facility is abandoned way back 1942." Kris said while searching information about the facility that we found inside this mountain. "This is the laboratory where the first nuclear reactor invented and I think, the one that has been heating up is one of those that they forgot to disarm when they decided to abandon this place."

"And that's the reason why the government thought your report was just a prank." Ives said. "They never knew this facility. No one is actually knew about this"

"We can't just let that reactor explode." Jelah said. "It will damage the whole mountain and base on the water source here, it can create a massive landslide that will cover the entire village below."

"Thousands of people will die if we don't do anything." Maki added. "And everything around here will surely be destroyed. So we need to do something to save everything from this mistake."

Ah! This is not good! Everything is not good and I have to do something about this.

But I don't know what to do to stop that reactor from exploding? Or how am I at least going to get that reactor out of the facility so I can save the whole mountain?
