Night Of The Wolf

1810 Words
~ Drake This run was needed so much more than I realized. Sage was bolting around like a pup through the woods that are surrounding my pack, kicking up leaves and dirt. 'Excited tonight aren't ya?' Jason mind links me through our wolves. 'Beyond excited! I have a mate. And this is our first run since finding her.' We continue bounding through the woods, Cain having to race to keep up with Sage, seeing how my wolf was the faster of the two. 'So you can just enjoy this run as long as you want. I have already organized a patrol of the border. Put it in the control of our best warriors. If anyone tries to invade or whatever else, it'll be handled in the best way possible, I swear.' This was a relief. I wasn't ready to return and didn't feel like I would be any time soon either. I am so glad that Jason is part of my pack. His loyalty and honesty are the best that I have ever seen or witnessed. He would follow my commands to his death, this type of allegiance to a leader is commendable. After a long run we stopped at a little pond, panting, hearts pounding. Sage laid us down on our side and huffed out a deep breath. Exhausted, I felt my limbs become gel. 'Jason, I am just completely depleted. I think I'm going to just stay here for a bit and take a short nap inside Sage's form.' 'Do you need me to stay and watch over you, Sir?' 'No. That isn't necessary. Even if I'm sneak attacked I'll be able to handle it by myself. Just keep an extra look out for rogues will ya?' 'Of course I will. This will be the most protected pack this side of the country while you rest, my Alpha.' Sage gets us comfortable and we drift into a deep sleep, dreaming about our beautiful mate, Savy, and the future we will have ruling our pack. ~Savia Running. Running. We run and we don't stop. Vex is in control now and it's like I am the voice inside her mind now. It feels so unreal, like my body isn't mine anymore. I always wondered what it would be like to see through the eyes of an animal, to transform into one and live as they would. I never dreamed it would be an experience I would actually endure. It was also the most excruciating and painful thing I have ever felt in my life. I never imagined anything would hurt so bad. Why didn't Drake warn me?/When I found out I was a wolf I didn't think about the transformation. I didn't even question when it would happen and I just went on with my life as if I were...human. Where are we going? I ask her, bouncing around inside due to the jolty bounding. I do not know. We continued running until our lungs almost gave out. Laying down to catch our breath a strong and thick combined scent began to trickle into the air around us, getting closer each second that passed. In a few moments another wolf enters the area where we are resting, a growl rumbling low in its throat. The wolf before us is a handsome creature, lean and muscular, proving that they will be much stronger than us if it came down to a fight. That would be the worst case scenario because I am not a fighter, I hate violence. Their gray and white fur bristled some as the snarling started. Vex whined a little and exposed our underbelly, showing the wolf that they are dominant and we mean no harm. The gray wolf approaches us, teeth bared, and still snarling, stepping over us they nip towards our neck when Vex tries to roll back onto our belly. They are going to rip us apart! I panic, thinking about their large sharp teeth goring us. What do we do now? Hopefully they will see that I came to their territory by mistake. It'll be hard to communicate not being able to shift back into human form. Vex says as I groan. As if tonight couldn't get any worse. A few more wolves approach and one ducks behind a bush and comes back out human. He had clothes on which reminds me of my shredded outfit. Did he have clothes behind that bush? "Who are you? A rogue?" He questions me. Vex whines a little in response. Remembering what Drake said, I began to worry because that's exactly what we are with ties to a pack. He told me rogues are considered dangerous and dirty wolves. "Can you shift?" He raises an eyebrow questioningly, noticing the spark of fear that glanced briefly in our eyes. We shake our head to the best of our abilities, hoping he believes us. "So, is this your first shift then?" We nod. He nods too as if understanding that there would be no answer that would come tonight and sighs heavily. "Alright. Lead her to the cells, boys. We aren't finding out anything tonight, unfortunately. If you try anything funny though, we won't hesitate to take you out." The wolf standing over me backed up and growled again, not taking their eyes off me once. We stand up and follow the wolves ahead of us, Mr. Vicious & Aggressive following behind me to make sure I stay with them, growling and snapping his jaws at me if I fall too far behind. Vex, this is terrifying. The cells? We're prisoners now? Everyone's going to be so worried about me. How long will I have to stay here? I don't know. It won't be up to us. It will be up to their Alpha and if they believe we meant no harm. Wolves are very territorial and not usually raised as a human would be. We wolves have laws and we have just broken a big one, trespassing. If the Alpha doesn't believe us then your human family and friends may never see you again, or find you. We would be put to death. The new wave of terror that courses through my half of our shared mind fills us both with unease. I say nothing, the harsh reality of our situation setting in. I could die here and no one would ever know. "Okay, here we are." The human form captor says, opening a heavy iron cell door. I walk inside and see a change of clothes on the cot then sit while the door closes. "I'll be down just after sunrise. As soon as you can, shift back and get dressed. I expect to get some questions answered in the morning." He turns and walks away, saying nothing more, and it's just me and Vex alone with our thoughts. ~Carolyn (Savia's Mom) My heart is breaking and I can't stop crying. My baby girl, my miracle baby, missing. The police think that she was mauled and dragged off by some kind of animal, a pack of wolves the likely suspects due to the paw prints around the scene. They didn't find any blood though so I'm not sure how she could have been mauled. "Ms. Reed." A female officer approaches with a notepad in her hands. "We need to discuss some things." She says as she sits down in a chair across from me. "Alright." My voice sounds hoarse from all the crying. "Does your daughter have any enemies or people she was afraid of? Someone who may have wanted to hurt her?" I shook my head. "No. She was very well liked, voted most popular and most likely to succeed by her classmates." I start staring off into space and feeling empty. "Ms. Reed, I really need you to focus. This is all to help figure out what happened to your daughter and help bring her home any way we can." She looks like she's not very hopeful that they will find anything pointing to a good reunion. Savy's footprints were the only ones around aside from the wolf tracks. I'm sure they think she's already lost to us. "I'm sorry. Uhm... She was afraid of a stranger that she met in passing at the mall but that was so silly. She never saw him again afterwards." "This could be vital. Did she ever describe his appearance?" The officer says, jotting down some notes before looking back at me. I pull my lips into my mouth and hold them between my teeth while shaking my head again. "Not really, no. Only that he was tall and looked intimidating. She would have terrible nightmares that would wake her in the middle of the night of this man. She described his eyes as looking hungry and a feeing of being hunted. But those were just dreams." "Carolyn." Brooke says walking over to me and sitting next to me, placing her hand on my knee. I grab it and squeeze tightly, fighting the urge to cry again. "This is Brooke, one of Savy's best friends." The officer nodded and asked her the same questions she asked me. "And of this man from the mall? Do you know anything about that?" Brooke looks at me with wide eyes, taking a deep breath. "His name is Drake Mitchell." My heart dropped. That was the name of the man she went to dinner with a bit ago. She never told me that was the guy she was having nightmares of. A knot forms in my gut and I feel like I'm going to throw up. That man? What was she doing with him? How could she go from being so petrified of him to making out with him at the restaurant in just a few days? Did he bribe her? "He's her boyfriend." Brooke continues. "Do you know what he looks like?" She poses her pen ready above her notepad, sure she would get answers this time. "Yeah. Uhm, he's maybe about 6 feet tall, brown hair and I don't remember what color she said his eyes were. I'm sorry." "Don't be. You have given us so much information. Just having his name will help us. Thank you." She then turns to me, "Ms. Reed, we'll be in touch." She gets up and goes to speak to other officers, pointing in our direction, then pointing out something she wrote down. "Brooke, how long have you known about her seeing this man?" "Just as long as you. She told me that night after you caught them kissing at the restaurant." "Did she seem off to you? Do you think he could have hurt her?" "I really don't have an answer for that Carolyn. I just hope wherever she is, she's okay." She squeezes my hand back and I sigh. "I hope so, too."
