Chapter 1
I stood against the walls in the shadows. I really had no interest in being here. I rolled my eyes as I glanced down at my watch.
"Why are we here Rebel?" My wolf Remy asks.
"Because Mother made us come ." I mutter stuffing my hands into my pocket.
I never liked these events I would much rather run free through the forest. I smiled politely as I day dreamed about the wind blowing through my fur. Finally I was over the stuffiness of the party and stepped outside to take a breath of air.
"Do you smell that?" I ask as a delicious scent fills the air. It got stronger and stronger until it was overpowering all of my senses. My heart was pounding wildly in my chest and the word Mate overwhelmed my thoughts. Remy was lunging for whoever it was. I backed away running as fast as I could from the scent. I wasn't ready for this yet.
Shadow's POV:
"I don't want to go," I said defiantly.
"You are going and that's final" my father commanded.
I rolled my eyes. I hated these events being marched around like a show pony.
"You're 23 honey and still have not found your fated mate. It's time to chose one you are a future Alpha and more importantly a future king." My mother said with compassion in her eyes.
"Fine, whatever." I replied throwing my hands up in defeat.
"I don't want to choose I want our fated mate." Blaze growled angrily in my head.
"I know but you know they are not going to let up."
"Ugh fine let's get this over with."
As we arrived to the party a intoxicating scent hit me straight in my face.
"Blaze you smell that?" I ask.
"Yeah"
"Is that what I think that is?"
"MATE!" He howls happily."
We moved swiftly towards the smell but it started to fade.
"Wait is she running from us?"
Rebel's POV:
"Why did you run from them?" Remy asked confused.
"Because I'm not ready"
"Rebel you are 22 most she-wolves are already mated." Remy tries to reason.
I knew that Remy longed for her mate in a way. I knew it wasn't fair to her.
"What if he's like dad? Though he's fated to mom he sleeps around all the time."
My parents are prominent members in wolfen society. My parents haven't been happily married since I was 16. They just put on a front to save face.
"Rebel I understand your concerns but not all men are like Father. "
"You're right," I sighed.
"Come now let's go back."
"Fine," I deflate.
Shadow's POV:
I sat there feeling rejected. Why did she run from us? That was the question rummaging through my brain. I was ready to leave when the scent crossed my nose again. I immediately sprung to my feet following where it was coming from. At its strongest point I stopped behind a beautiful 4'11 she wolf. She had shoulder length jet black hair with a light complexion to contrast. I held my breath as she slowly turned around revealing her face. She was stunning, she had light gray eyes that almost looked silver and full pouty lips that had a cherry red tint to them. She smelled like honey pears and leather. I chuckled as I realized that she dressed from head to toe in leather. My type of woman. I thought. Before I could approach her a lady came speeding in her direction with another man in tow.
Blaze and I growled simultaneously in irritation.
"Rebel where have you been?" She demanded.
"I, I just went outside for some air."
The woman rolled her eyes giving her a pointed look. "This is Alpha Jeremiah from the Morning Star Pack."
"Nice to meet you" she mumbled
He turns his attention to whom I presume is her mother. "She's gorgeous Claudette. My son would adore her."
"Excuse me?" Rebel interrupted. "Who is your son?"
They both ignored her as if she said nothing.
"This would strengthen the merger of our two companies with the union of our kids."
"Absolutely not." Rebel said "I'm not some negotiation piece that you can bargain off to the highest bidder." She screams as she storms off in a huff.
I followed as she stormed into the direction of the open field.
"I already know you're behind me you minds well show yourself."
Busted!!!
Rebel's POV
I knew that he was behind me. I could smell him. I smelled cedarwood and bergamot with a strong hint of leather. It was tantalizing. For the weirdest reason it bought me a bit of comfort soothing my raging mind. I sat on the rocks that overlooked the waterfall. The water crashing against the mountains always brought me peace.
"Are you okay?" He asks taking a seat next to me. I turned my head finally taking a look at the man who's scent has been driving me insane all night. Goddess he was gorgeous. He had cocoa brown skin with shoulder length dreads neatly twisted. His beautiful hazel eyes smoldering and piercing at the same time. He had high cheekbones and full lips with a sharp chiseled jawline. He smiled and my heart melted into goo within my chest.
"I just refuse to be used like this who I take as my mate should be my choice. The fact that my mom tried to use me as a pawn is infuriating."
"Trust me I understand more than you think." He sighs running a hand through his hair.
"Hi, I'm Rebel by the way."
"My name is Shadow."
"That's a unique name I like it." I smiled for what seemed like the first time today.
"My parents feel that by 23 I should have already found my fated mate. They said that if the Goddess hasn't revealed her yet then you must choose one. The pressure that they put on me is sometimes overwhelming." He says letting out a puff of air.
"I know it feels sometimes I'm.."
"Suffocating" we both say in unison.
We stared at each other for a moment than burst into laughter.
"Thanks for following me you're so easy to talk to."
"Anytime beautiful." He winks.
We sat there in comfortable silence for awhile just watching the water. Finally it was time to head back. We walked side by side our shoulders brushing against each other. We finally reached my house where my mother and father were actively arguing.
"You're wrong Claudette no ifs ands or buts about it." My dad bellowed.
"How?" My mother shot back.
"Our daughter is not a bargaining chip. How dare you try to use her in that way."
My dad may be a cheater but he was a great dad. He was fiercely protective over me."
I shook my head I really didn't feel like going through this tonight. Shadow saw the sadness that crossed my face.
"You need to apologize to our daughter." He bellows louder.
"I will do no such thing."
"Ugh." I say throwing my hands in the air walking in the opposite direction.
"Hey where are you going?" He asks jogging behind me.
"I gotta get out of here " I sat tears burning the corners of my eyes.
"Hey don't cry," he says embracing me.
I honestly didn't know how much I needed that. His warm scent wrapped me in a cocoon of comfort.
"Wanna get out of here?"
I looked back at my house I could still hear my parents arguing.
"Yeah let's go." I shrug
