Chapter1:The Restless Orphan
The Restless Orphan
Luna jolted awake; her pulse quickened. Her bedding wrapped around her feet, and the chilly moist forest air from her dream lingered.
"This dream keeps coming back. Why?" she muttered, trying to steady herself. Something always chased her, but she never saw what.
Luna rubbed her eyes and looked around the cramped room she and the other girls occupied. They slept on, their quiet breaths filling the space.
She sighed and left her bed, slipping into her old slippers without a sound. As she went downstairs, the smell of breakfast hit her nose. The usual scent of oatmeal filled the air causing her stomach to growl.
"Good morning, Luna," Mrs. Granger said as Luna walked into the kitchen. Mrs. Granger stood at the stove stirring a pot, her gray hair tied back in a tidy bun.
"Morning," Luna said, trying to sound upbeat. But she couldn't shake the uneasy feeling her dream had left.
"Did you sleep well?" Mrs. Granger asked, looking over her shoulder.
Luna paused. "Not. I had that dream again."
Mrs. Granger's brow creased. "The same one? The forest?"
Luna bobbed her head. "Yeah. It seems... different though. As if it's more than just a dream."
Mrs. Granger switched off the stove and moved to Luna resting a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "Dreams can be odd, sweetie. But don't let them bother you. They're dreams after all."
Luna mustered a smile. "I suppose you're right."
As the other kids began to trickle into the kitchen, Luna took a seat with them at the long wooden table. The buzz and giggles filled the room, but Luna felt detached, as if she was observing from the outside.
"Pass the sugar, please," one of the girls said giving Luna's arm a gentle push.
Luna handed over the sugar bowl without thinking, her mind still dwelling on the dream. Try as she might, she couldn't shake off the feeling of isolation that seemed to stick to her.
"Luna, are you alright?" another girl asked noticing her silence.
Luna snapped back to reality and tried to concentrate. "Yeah, I'm okay. Just lost in thought."
Mrs. Granger observed her from the kitchen, worry visible on her face. But she kept quiet choosing to let Luna work through her thoughts by herself.
After breakfast, Mrs. Granger gave Luna a small list of errands to run in town.
"Could you get these items for me, dear?" Mrs. Granger asked. "The market should have everything."
Luna nodded taking the list. "Sure. I'll return soon."
Shadowbrook was a quiet town where everyone knew each other. But today, Luna noticed how everyone seemed to whisper. As she walked past, people glanced at her and looked away, as if scared of being caught.
"What's happening?" Luna wondered out loud.
She headed to the market ignoring the odd glances. As she rounded a corner, she collided with someone losing her footing.
"Watch it!" a cold voice barked.
Luna gazed up and found herself looking into the eyes of a tall man with dark hair. His stare was powerful almost penetrating, and it made her feel diminutive.
"I-I'm sorry," Luna stuttered stepping back.
The man didn't answer right away. He just kept looking at her, as if to solve a puzzle. Luna felt a weird attraction to him, like she recognized him from somewhere, but she couldn't pinpoint it.
"Watch your step," he said at last, his voice quiet yet firm.
Luna bobbed her head, her pulse still pounding. "I will. Sorry again."
As the man left, Luna couldn't shake off a blend of puzzlement and inquisitiveness. Who was this person? And why did she feel so... linked to him?
She tried to clear her mind pushing these thoughts aside. She still needed to finish her chores, and the quicker she wrapped up the sooner she could head back to the orphanage.
Luna couldn't shake the thought of the man as she walked through the market.
His cold attitude and the odd connection she felt left her feeling uneasy for reasons she couldn't pinpoint.
Luna finished her shopping and prepared to exit the market. A woman blocked her path. This woman had long dark hair and eyes that seemed to peer into Luna's soul.
"Hello, Luna," the woman said in a voice that sounded too friendly.
Luna stopped in her tracks. "How do you know my name?"
The woman grinned, but her eyes remained cold. "I know many things. My name is Evelyn Grey."
Luna shivered. Something about this woman seemed wrong making Luna want to flee.
"Oh, hello," Luna said warily. "Do you need anything?"
Evelyn moved closer; her eyes locked on Luna's. "I'm here to assist you. Be wary, Luna. This town has dangers you can't grasp."
"What do you mean by that?" Luna asked feeling more uneasy.
Evelyn leaned close, whispering. "Avoid Draven Blackwood. He's not as he appears."
"Draven?" Luna repeated remembering the man she had run into before. "Why? What's the problem with him?"
Evelyn's smile vanished, her face becoming grave. "You'll learn soon. Just believe me—keep your distance from him."
Luna gulped. "But... I'm not even acquainted with him."
"That's irrelevant," Evelyn stated, her tone resolute. "He poses a threat, Luna. And if you get near, you'll be at risk too."
Luna felt her heart thump. She couldn't decide what to think, but Evelyn's eyes showed real fear.
"Okay," Luna said at last. "I won't go near it."
Evelyn gave a nod, her face losing some of its tension. "Good. Watch out, Luna. This town keeps a lot under wraps."
With that, Evelyn turned and left blending into the crowd. Luna stayed put, her thoughts in a whirl.
"What's going on here?" she said under her breath. "And why do I sense I'm caught up in it?"
She couldn't think of any solutions a growing worry that something bad was about to occur. But one thing was obvious Shadowbrook wasn't the quiet peaceful town she had always known.
That night, Luna couldn't sleep. She rolled around in her bed, her thoughts raced with everything that had happened that day.
In the end, she stopped trying and sat up looking out the window. The full moon shone casting a silver light over the town. The forest at the edge of Shadowbrook looked dark and strange, the trees moved in the night wind.
Luna rose from her bed and snuck out of the orphanage without much thought. A strange pull drew her to the forest, as if something beckoned her.
The cool night air chilled her as she walked through the quiet streets. The closer she came to the forest the stronger the pull became.
She paused at the edge of the trees. The darkness seemed to buzz with energy, and Luna's heart raced in her chest.
She stepped forward, her foot crushing the fallen leaves. The whispers grew louder almost as if the forest lived calling her name.
But then, a voice inside her yelled to stop. An unexplained icy dread froze her in place.
Luna remained still caught between a weird push to go into the woods and the terror that held her back. She had no clue what lurked there, but her gut said once she stepped over that boundary, she couldn't go back.
What seemed like forever passed before Luna turned and left, her heart weighed down by mystery. As she headed back to the orphanage, she couldn't shake off the sense that eyes were on her waiting for her to come back.
